Let's take a closer look at what we could learn from the rainy Spa weekend with lots of spray around the cars!
(Spray is showing us reality and hence more accurate than CFD or wind tunnel. We just need to find good pictues and videos)
Which differences could we see between cars?
How does the flow behave in corners?

Did anyone see the vapor cones that the Ferrari was creating underneath the car infront of the floor, behind the wheels? I think it was during the Sprint Shootout. It would happen during the long Kemmel Straight. At one time, the vapor cone was sorta flashing in snyc with the porpoising. It would appear like a cloud, then dissappear when the floor bottomed out, then reappear as the suspension/floor cycled back up. It reminded me of fighter jets doing high g manuvers and you'd see a large vapor cone on the wings. No other car was doing that. I wonder why only the Ferrari's were experiencing that kind of phenomenon? Edit: It was in Qualifying. Q2 around 6:20 left in the round as Sainz passed Max into turn 7 and really noticeable in Q3 with 12 secs left as Sainz approaches turn 7

I thought it was an exciting race! Watching Max slice thru the field from 5th place and then pulling a huge gap out front was awesome. Also when the rain came in for a few mins that had everyone on their toes. A track that was a little too wet for worn slicks but too dry for inters. I love those tricky transitions between a wet and dry track. Then we seen the McLaren coming to life in the wet/cold since they were running a lot more downforce than everyone else. It's important to keep in mind that spray may not __entirely__ reflect the airflow around the car. In order to fully visualise the airflow you want small, very light particles like smoke that don't have appreciable momentum on their own, as this means they will not "overshoot" the flow-line of the air molecules because they are too heavy. However, water droplets tend to be quite large; the tyres aren't designed to fully atomise the water droplets. So the spray may not be an entirely accurate representation of how the air is actually flowing around the car, especially the stuff that's being squirted out of the tyre contact patch.

So why are cars unsettling so much after being overtaken? A recent example is Lewis and Checo, as soon as Checo went in front of Lewis, Lewis' front snapped. I've seen this so many times in the last 2 years. Also tire deg seems (key word is "seems" Im not sure if thats the actual case) bigger now than before especially when they in dirty air, which leads to cars just slotting behind another car in the 1.5-2.5 seconds range. It seems to me the new regs did nothing to improve racing.
@Celciusify
@Celciusify Жыл бұрын
It's still better than it used to be, but the more downforce the cars are producing, the more they're impacted. And if the wake is pushed outboard like on the RB, the area behind that affects the following car is bigger. So it's a combination of these factors that slowly ruins these regulations, they DO work, it's just that it gets worse over time. Imo the sidepods should get regulated further in 2026 to remove the outwash.
@mugshotmarley
@mugshotmarley Жыл бұрын
This era of ground effects is all about sealing the floor on the edges to create a low pressure pocket underneath the car that sucks it to the ground. It works really well when there is clean air going in and under the car. When side by side, the outwash created on the right side of Perez car pushes a lot of turbulent air into the Merc. That turbulent air then disrupts the merc's floor edge sealing which causes a sudden loss of downforce, especially on a long wide turn (higher speed) that they were in. That sudden loss of traction causes sudden understeer in the middle of the turn. Perez got clean air so he can hang around the outside, but not Lewis.

Great Video! Really this is just a simple solution on reducing drag, I think Mclaren big jump really shows good this philosophy is. And I think the Aston Martin needs a whole new sidepod design ( Probably similar to Redbull's to reduce drag ). The Waterslides seems like Something Redbull wouldn't benefit as much as the car is so good already. Mercedes were adamant that this concept resulted in a loss downforce, I think they didn't realize it meant drag was reduced instead of overall downforce. Explains why they stick with the zero-pod concept over the winter, but really this video shows it really wasn't the case. Hope they take cues. I don't think it ruined cars to follow closer, Redbull took a simple solution and improved on it though updates.

A very big selling point of why the sport needed it, was it would make for closer racing and enable more overtakes! Because the cars would be able to follow each other very close, without losing loads of stability and performance, from dirty air off the car in front. But as it turns out that is just not the case and cars still need to drop back from following a car in front to not kill their tyers. So just like it was before the new regulations... I don't mean the camber, I mean the angle that Mercedes was able to modify with the DAS. As far as I know, front wheels are not literally parallel, they are facing inwards a little bit. So I've had a theory for a long time that the real answer to the spray is make like the Gen 2 formula E cars did and cover the front wheels. With that done, the amount of spray would be massively reduced, as it would lose all the momentum in the arch (this is all very luddite reasoning). It'd also have a net effect of making the cars less draggy and create a new way to use aero without creating outwash, potentially. Is there a reason F1 (and their fans) are so against having covered wheels on the cars? It's seemed a no-brainer to me since the Red Bull Gran Turismo concept from... I think GT4 or so, had covered front wheels. Worth some CFD tickets to put numbers on it maybe? I've love to know just how much of a difference it would make.

Since RedBull is going in against the spirit of the rules, they should be penalized. This video also clearly explains RB's advantage on how they are able to benefit from their DRS so much more than the competition. the issue here is that if the FIA allows this, then all the teams will follow suit, and you are back to square 1 PRE-22, with a lot of unneccesary money spend, and the whole problem is back. It essentially only worked for the 1st 1/2 of the '22 season. By now, it's all done and dusted. It's reasonable to expect that any reg change will cause this. The real problem however is not that the outwash or aero causes cars to have problems following. That is the genuine thought problem of the FIA. The problem is that following close, with a loss of aero, and increase in heat, can ruin your tires in as short as just 1 or 2 laps. The problem thus, is actually, not the presence of aerodynamic grip, it's the lack of mechanical grip - and this is greatly due to the artificially bad properties of the tires. if the FIA finally decides to use proper tires, that bring proper, respectable grip and endurance, then we're looking at a whole different situation. It will also improve racing under wet conditions. Less aero dependance is not really a solution. It is not the real problem, because you will always turn into a situation that that will be overcome. Mechanical grip is what is lacking, and that mechanical grip should be achieved fully independent of aerodynamics. There are two ways to achieve this, but there are 3 things needed to bring real success, best is 4 changes. The first is, as stated, to fix the tire issues. Make real, good, tires, and you are done. They can keep the different tyre compound mandate if they wish. The second is, to lower the overall curb weight of the cars. Make them shorter, and allow 'exotic' materials. The cost cap makes sure costs don't fly out of reality. A third solution, would be to open up the regs. The cost cap will prevent going too far on cost. but if you open up regs, teams can come up with nifty innovative designs, as long as they fit within safety margins. The fourth solution would be, to re-introduce fueling. This would also reduce the weight of the cars easily by 50kgs. Right now, they ride with 100kgs of fuel on board at the start. The cars are already super heavy. If you introduce re-fueling, by forcing the max fuel capacity to be 50kgs, then this will make the cars a lot faster and much more agile. 'But it is more dangerous to have fuel during a pitstop' - yes and no. The idea once was to reduce incidents because teams were trying to have too fast refueling leading to incidents. But now we have so fast tire changes that it creates such hectic we see much more 'unsafe releases', and it puts many members in danger. forced refueling makes the pitstops slower, and as such, less cost and pressure to change the wheels and make mistakes. It will also take away unfair tactics during safety cars or virtual safety cars to a margin.

@MarcCastellsBallesta

That's another factor to take into account. A big one. Maybe it's not useful to compare cars side by side. But surely we can compare cars when both are out of the dry line & not side by side. I mean, at different moments.

I am not comparing the McLaren next to the Red Bull. I am just explaining the FIA's intention vs Red Bull. The only comparison I did was HAAS vs Aston and there was still some spray around the HAAS to see the general flow pattern. There is never a perfect comparison, that's why I keep these videos more general.

This shows where others lack. Tbh, I think redbull is best at aero. Adrian newey and the team he built is great at aero. Mercedes’s strength has been engine but because of the freeze they can’t do anything with the engine. Fia lost the plot here . They basically handed the championship to redbull . It makes no sense because f1 is more about powertrain than aero. Manufacturers are here because of the engine not aero . Redbull being an independent team has become great at aero as that has been their main focus as they always sourced their engines from outside.

We also lost 5 teams(Manor, Caterham, Force India, Lotus, Sauber) to bankruptcies/insolvency during the early hybrid era, so do you want that again. F1 fans with goldfish memory are always the most ridiculous with their claims.

@@jb-y1487 funny coming from someone who clearly didn't follow the seasons when they happened. Teams were struggling hugely with engine cost, teams like Sauber used 1 year old Ferrari engines, McLaren was losing 10 million a year from 2015-2017, Mercedes HPP spent 320million pounds in 2020. It's about both. You need enough engine power to be competitive and to have the horsepower to not loose too much too speed as a result of your aerodynamic features, but you need good aerodynamics/suspension/package in order to create a the car with the highest overall potential and performance on a wide range of circuits with a wide operating window. It's reductive to say it's any one thing. Every aspect of the car is important and feeds into every other aspect of the car. It's a system of systems where every element is connected and impacts every other element.n

Let’s hope Mercedes can get some improvements done before end of year… I feel the main issue for them would be their chassis design

What surprised me the most this year is hearing Lewis complaining about the drivers seat position on the car. He's too close to the front. I never imagined it would have an effect on "driveability" until he said it. But it makes total sense.

Not just the chassis, but the rear suspension and weight distribution is heavily impacting the car as well. What this car desperately needs is a brand new underfloor can partially mitigate the issues if the design it like Redbull or Aston Martin’s. Note that this floor is still the Zero-Pod concept floor.

Never take rain into account regarding exact aerodynamics of a car. Water spray from rain goes all over the place and only sometimes helps with vortex visualization, only flow viz applied directly to car surface and itself being a special mixture of paraffin and pigment can show the flow on the car, but not around it. Water cannot really show the flow of air around the car because water is heavier than air and water spray goes all over the place. A nice attempt, but this analysis has not much to do with reality of the exact flow patterns because water spray behaves differently than air. To even draw comparisons between cars is, unfortunately, completely off the mark, as the conditions are almost always completely different. Whether it's the amount of water itself, or the wind, or the condition of the car - such things are completely meaningless. Sorry to say this, nice try, but the conclusions and statements, especially comparisons between different cars are completely worthless. Unfortunately, this is a fact. Waterspray does not make a track a windtunnel. Water is no air.The amount of water always varies completely at any time and the ambient conditions and the car is also never comparable. Sorry, nice as a gag, but in reality completely worthless.
@BSport320

Yes water drops don’t behave exactly like air because they are heavier and for that reason we don’t look at every little detail. This video is just to give people a general idea of how flow works around these cars.
