For me, the benefit of being up two pawns is that I can blunder three pawns and only be down a pawn.

I tell beginners that going pawn grabbing early in the game, with the black pieces, is generally not a good idea. You wind up three tempi down and not good enough to work through the pressure.

Eric, I learned one important lesson from you in this series - take your time during opening. I always rushed it too much, playing "on autopilot", without concern how my opponent reacts and what is his plan. So thank you for very instructive chess!

Same. I used to find the openings boring, much to my own disadvantage. I also used to be quite scornful of all the pattern naming, you know London, Italian, Ponziani etc etc, finding it kind of snobby and elitist and not really wanting to get onboard with it. I now realise, of course, that without that it's impossible to strategise with any depth and that embracing those patterns is the key to getting better and being able to discuss and analyse games. These videos are like gold dust for me. Chess is interesting again.

This. There's no benefit to having 6+ minutes left on your clock when checkmate occurs in a Rapid game. The clock is a piece. Use it intelligently.

It seems that OKGolfer went with an opening (s)he hadn't prepped for. Game 2 was a really interesting game. I was following along with Stockfish and saw the numbers swing wildly. When Eric called Ne5 a "really good move," Stockfish reacted to it as a really bad move. It went from +1.7 to -2.4. Eric's response of Rc8 swung it back to +0.8. (Stockfish preferred the Bxb1 line Eric had originally planned.) Time and time again, pieces were withdrawn when Stockfish called for the attack! In the end, pawn_z_scheme_king ran out of time when the position was almost dead-even. This is definitely an opening sequence I want to spend some time with. I would be curious to know the statistics had Eric clicked on game review. Game 3 was just a romp. jerninastos' position just steadily eroded from g6 onward. The failure to capture the bishop on f7, then giving up his bishop and knight rather than retreating were serious errors.

These Poisoned Pawn Variation positions where black plays Qxb2 can get extremely sharp, and a lot of the engine's recommendations are very "engine move" like. Humans might see the +3 pawn advantage, but the engine clearly doesn't think much of black's outside connected passers when they're still in their original positions and difficult to defend, especially when white has all their major pieces.

I agree. It is a rare combination of interesting content that is pragmatic, yet still wholly engaging. It’s really illuminating to hear the rationale, move by move, with discussion of threats, potential mistakes, etc. So much better than a narrative of a game between two GMs, for example. I’ve learned so much watching this series. And it is delivered with humility and a touch of humor. Perfect balance.

These aggro London openings everyone plays now are so grossly overpowered tbh. Had a similar line today and was +2 pawns as black and the computer still favored white the entire way. They usually have a clock advantage since the system doesn't vary much and they can fumble 2-3 pawns and still feel like they are winning/attacking.

@Eric: At 19:14, after white played Qb3, what about Na5, attacking whites Queen and also defending the b7-pawn instead of Qd7? Was the first move that came to mind, I don't see any drawback to it. What do you think? Love your speedrun, your channel in general, I learned a lot watching this series and gained about 200 elo since. Thank you very much! Edit: I just realized that white can play Qb5, forcing my Knight back and then win the b2-pawn, lol. Nevermind

One thing I'm really taking from the last two, as you approach my rating, and I think I never have the same sort of tactics as you, your basic setup is much stronger, with pieces supporting other pieces sometimes multiple times. It seems like that really solid structure leads to far more opportunities to use tactical play. That on top of the obvious I just don't see all of them you do. But even in using the analyzer you get more opportunities. But by having pieces supported better those opportunities seem to show up more often.

The first game, which I believe you called the Rousseau Gambit (?) looked exactly like the kind of thing one would find in an IA Horowitz instruction manual from the 40s or 50s. I think his most successful book advertised that most games are won (or lost) in the first ten moves. Still, there are lessons left in the past that are forgotten and rediscovered. . . . The second game was just burglary, with all the heart-pounding drama of nearly getting caught and knowing it. In an alternate universe, black loses his queen.
