The Uchihas are such edgelords that they need to suffer just to get powerful, which causes (chakra) blood to go straight to their eyes and allows them to stare down their enemies to death. Like I accidentally cut myself just explaining this.

Even the character personality is the edgiest thing I've seen, all he does during 700 episodes besides looking edgy is acting edgy by crying, complaining and blaming everyone for everything... In the beginning I was like, "when will this mofo die huh?" but then I realize they had made the whole anime about finding nemo...

I love how One Punch Man basically makes fun of this by having specifically very edgy characters, who are all ninjas or samurais with really redundant names. Speed of sound Sonic, Gale wind, Hellfire flame! I love it!

Maul’s biggest problem was the letdown factor. The marketing hyped him up as some big, badass threat. Then the movie landed and we got... Nothing. A character that didn’t earn his moment of badass, and a minute later is sliced in half. If he’d had /any/ development it would have been better, but cookie cutters look at him and go ‘Mate, you’re a bit thin’.

Let's not forget one of the granddaddies of edge: Todd Mcfarlane's Spawn. Black and red color scheme? Check! Overdesigned? Well, we've got a costume covered with chains, a skull on his belt, spiky rivets and a way-too-long-to-be-useful-cape. So, check. Big ass guns? Check. Dark backstory? A soldier who got killed and sent to hell to become a general of hell's army. How edgy can you get? Check. Edgy name: Spawn. Like in Hellspawn. Yeah, that's an edgename right there. Check.

I mean, the original one was pretty edgy if you think about it, but it worked because (in later games at least) it wasn't taken seriously. Yes, he was a character with an overdesigned outfit, a cool-sounding name, and a tragic backstory but he was also just a goof who took absolutely nothing seriously, and that worked in his favor. DmC Dante lacked that charm, and (to me at least) that's why he came across as a tryhard edgelord.

In a slight defense of zerocool, the character was like ten when he came up with it. He was 18 when he chose crashoverride however so it does show a pattern.

They probably have seen clone wars, but either way, the movie version of Darth maul is boring. It took 13 years for him to get a real personality. Think back to the phantom menace, and name me an actual quote from Darth maul in it. The only line I can even think of is "At last we will reveal ourselves. At last we will have our revenge." That's not a good line, it's the just only line I can even remember him saying. The clone wars TV show didn't bring light to how good Darth maul is. It had to rebuild him from the ground up to make him cool

@@eryvac0074 dialogue isn't everything. Ray Park gave an excellent physical performance and that's why hes remembered in the main films. The Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul fight is the best fight scene in live action star wars in my opinion.

@@jessicablack2346 partially, you're right. Dialogue isn't everything. There are so many ways to show character, and that includes fight scenes. But Darth Maul doesn't show any personality throughout the duel of the fates. Everything, from the song, to his fighting style, to even the way he walks back and forth during the laser wall section before Qui Gon's death are all there to show off that he is intimidating. We don't learn his goals, we don't learn his reasons for becoming a sith, we don't see who Maul is as a character... Because there is no character to show. Yes, Ray Park gave an amazing fight, but the choreography was impressive. It was fast, fluid and almost hypnotic to watch, but Ray can't make whiskey from wine. He didn't have a character to work with

@@eryvac0074 Maul's fighting style shows that he is very agile and aggressive, using his anger as a weapon. The pacing shows that he's brash and impatient. Yes they are also to intimidate but so much character can come from that, (granted not as much as I'd like.) you're right about the song though, as cool as it sounds, there's nothing behind it. But Maul still has more characterisation in that film than people realise.

I like Darth Maul because his light saber is actually useful and cool and I’m sure when audiences first saw him ignite that second side of that light saber they were filled with adrenaline. Plus, his design is actually pretty good,if he existed he’d be intimidating and I don’t think he was designed to be edgy. He also isn’t a main villain in the prequels,only being in one film. Kylo Ren on the other hand,his light saber is fucking useless aside from ‘it looks cool’. He’s clearly designed to be someone wanting to follow Vader’s footsteps which is fine but he should have progressed into having his own style,that could be his character ark. Also,he’s a main villain so it’s harder to overlook that he’s trying to ride off Vader’s design. He’s also closer to looking like Vader than Maul is.

I'm with you on the simplicity aspect. For me also is whatever is apart of the characters design. Their needs to be a reason for it. Magnetos helmet is designed to help him deal with physics. But it just happens to look cool and iconic.

Recently SEGA did a Twitter takeover where they answered questions with the voice actors as the characters. Shadow was one of the characters in it and you find out he donates his money to charity, he shops at a convenience store called "Maria" because he wants to support any Maria(his friend that he saw killed), also in the future shadow hopes to make a cat orphanage and take care of cats. Also Shadow hates brands and only wants to indie stuff.
