I hate, absolutely loathe, Ross, but you have to admit, David Schwimmer does a fantastic job of acting such an unlikable character.

I think it was terrible of him to sleep with another woman instantly after breaking up. I understand why Rachel wouldn’t want to get back together with him after that. However, it wasn’t cheating.

In a flashback, as soon as Ross finds put his wife is a lesbian, he immediately tries to sleep with Phoebe. Sex immediately after a break up is clearly part of his personality.

The biggest thing I hated was in the final episode Rachel had to give up her dream job to stay in New York with Ross when he could have very easily moved to France and gotten a job there with his degrees and work history. That pissed me of about him

I can't stand watching the Ross and Rachel argument arc in season 3 now because Ross just makes me so mad. I truly despise him when he made fun of her interest in fashion after he volunteered to go to that fashion lecture with her just so she wouldn't go with Mark. She was so excited about Ross going with her too. He wouldn't let her have her own friends and then he belittled her career choice, saying his one was much more interesting.

You didn’t even mention that episode where Phoebe was convinced that a stray cat was her mother reincarnated, and Ross is incessantly going on about how reincarnation isn’t real and that she’s foolish for believing in it even though it was obvious that the whole thing was a coping mechanism for the trauma of her mother committing suicide and finding her body with her head in the oven when she was fucking 14 iirc. Ross with his two alive (not to mention affluent) parents shows no sympathy for that whatsoever. Ross is a “nice guy” but that specific type that’s so obsessed with “facts” and “logic” that he completely lacks empathy or emotional intelligence. Phoebe finally had to be like dude it doesn’t matter if this cat is actually my dead mom or not just be a friend and support me through this. Like they worked past it but still, Ross felt the need to criticize and mock not only Phoebe’s way of processing and healing from her trauma but her spiritual beliefs? That was far from the only time she’d talked about reincarnation and she has also been shown wearing an ankh necklace, which symbolizes the belief that one’s earthly journey is only part of an eternal life. So yeah, I think it’s safe to say that it was her literal religion that Ross was shitting on which, regardless of your own beliefs, is majorly uncool.

I love the fact that they were actually such good friends behind the scenes and were there for each other, it makes the show much more enjoyable and wholesome.

Honestly I feel like even Chandler and Rachel would make a healthier, less toxic couple relationship than Ross and Rachel. And I say that as someone that pretty much loves Chandler and Monica together.

Here's the thing about that "we were on a break" thing is that clearly, both Ross and Rachel were on the same page about whether it was right or not to be with anyone else during this break. Ross would not kiss or even dance with anyone else, so he clearly knew right from wrong. But then he calls Rachel and she starts to say that she doesn't want to be on a break anymore. He starts to agree. So technically and verbally, at this point, they are back together. Then he hears Mark in the background, doesn't even wait to hear her explanation, hangs up the phone and sleeps with someone else. While Rachel sits there, completely unable to know what he's doing and unable to do anything about it. He fucking cheated.

Thanks for saying it, Ross IS the worst character. Joey- a bit gullible, but kind-hearted, anxious(when it comes to relationships) and cares about others Pheobe- giving, wants to helps her friends, spiritual and a charitable person. Chandler- funny, always willing to try new things and is willing to quit the things he likes but his friends hate for his friends(smoking) Monica- always striving to be the best hostess she can be, won’t give up on her dreams and puts a roof over peoples head, Rachel- is trying new things, wants to improve and be independent as a person and is faithful to Ross Ross- a piece of shit person.

Counterpoints: The friendzone (which actually wasn’t coined by Friends the TV show) is a slang term that means different things to different people. In Scrubs it was used to mean when someone you are interested in romantically only views you as a friend. Which isn’t about an entitlement to sex in exchange for friendship. This is in truth the actual more common understanding of the term. For Ross to be used as an example of the friendzone is rather rich considering the first season and a half was about him trying to confess his feelings to Rachel. In the last season (IIRC) when Rachel was feeling vulnerable due to her father’s illness and actively propositioned him for sex, Ross (in spite of wanting to and not having had any sex for a long while) made a point of turning her down because he didn’t want to take advantage of her (and then she gave him shit for it). I’m not saying this makes him a moral paragon because that’s just common decency, but at the same time it does cast him very far from a manipulative dick. He didn’t feel entitled to Rachel’s love or sex regardless of their friendship or even her consenting to sex, and in fact Rachel (more than once) attempted to sabotage his relationships with other women. And see that is the thing about Ross...he’s no worse than everyone else on the show. When you take all the Friends at face value none of them are really all that good people. Monica tricks Chandler into having sex with her because she wanted to get pregnant, Chandler is profoundly insecure and somewhat homophobic, Joey would be crucified in the day and age of the #MeToo movement and Phoebe has literally engaged in criminal acts. Then you have Rachel. Rachel does some demonstrably bad things but unlike Ross doesn’t have the emotional scars inflicted upon her from a failed first marriage (where she was cheated upon) to even begin excusing her misdemeanours. In one episode Phoebe even observes Ross’s insecurities are directly connected to how his first wife (her name escapes me I am afraid) cheated on him with her female lover and ended their relationship. But to address some of the more specific points raised. - Ross did put himself out there as a nice guy and available to Rachel, the problem was Rachel was just oblivious to his feelings misinterpreting them as nothing more than platonic. His big attempt to appear like he was a potential romantic partner to Rachel was during the blackout episode when Paolo randomly shows up and makes out with Rachel in the dark just as Ross was trying to confess his feelings. So he lost his chance and Rachel was now dating the Paolo. - Ross never actually says Paolo is an aweful guy. He is just understandably pissed off that he missed his chance and wishes Rachel was with him instead of Paolo. In no way does this make you a bad person, everyone can feel this way at various points in their life it is perfectly natural - The list Ross made comparing Rachel and his new girlfriend was actually suggested by Joey and Chandler. It was done to help him decide which girl to be with. Again, this is not an unreasonable thing to do if you need to decide whether to be with someone else other than the person you are already with. Loving someone doesn’t = worshipping the ground they walk on and being blind to their flaws. Even if we were to agree this was a very bad thing for Ross to have done is it honestly worse at all compared to Rachel tricking Ross’s girlfriend into shaving her head so he’d be less attracted to her or trying to sabotage his wedding? - Ross didn’t get annoyed that Rachel was mad about finding the list, he was annoyed with Joey and Chandler for convincing him to make the list. He was sad he was in the doghouse with her not that - Ross doesn’t constantly belittle his ex wife’s lesbian relationship. He essentially stops doing that after they get married and he is even the one who convinces his ex-wife to go through with the wedding, giving her away at the ceremony. His belittlement was mostly reserved for the woman his ex-wife was cheating on him with. Which is 100% excusable regardless of the sexualities involved. If his wife had cheated on him with another man no one would question Ross’s disdain for that man. To say he’s a bad person because he doesn’t like his ex-wife’s lover because it’s a same-sex relationship is a double standard. - Ross’ problems with a male nanny are indeed bad. But again, the other members of Friends have said and done equally bad things, not to mention back when the episode was released standards were different to how they are now. Most people even today are apprehensive over male nannys. Same thing with his son playing with a Barbie doll. We might be more accepting of it nowdays but in the 1990s it wasn’t common and would have been regarded as weird. People just were not as open minded as they are now. - It is true that Ross never lets go of the whole ‘we were on a break’ thing. But...is that really unreasonable. Rachel wouldn’t let it go either. In season 4 Rachel only consented to getting back together with Ross on the condition that he admit they were not on a break and he was in the wrong. Except...he wasn’t. Hugh Laurie did a brief guest spot on the show in season 4 and based upon Rachel’s own explanation of her relationship with Ross even walks away with the conclusion that in fact they WERE on a break. A few years ago an online poll even came in with the results of the voters revealing they felt Ross and Rachel were in fact on a break. So Ross really didn’t do anything immoral. When single he rebounded with another woman and Rachel treated it like he cheated on her which he did not. You know what Ross DID let go though...Rachel trying to sabotage his wedding and relationship with two other women. And her accepting Joey’s proposal which wasn’t a proposal. Trying to sabotage his wedding is way worse than sleeping with someone when you’ve only recently broken up with someone - Regarding the ‘we were on a break thing’ Ross doesn’t refuse to accept Rachel is upset at all. He acknowledged her upset but his contention is that he was not in the wrong, which again, he absolutely wasn’t. When his relationship is broken up because he is being treated as an adulterer when he literally wasn’t he’s entitled to feel annoyed as anyone would be - It is true Ross had major trust issues in Rachel over the Mark thing. But it was more he didn’t trust Mark, which turned out to not be unfounded since Mark did have a crush on Rachel. And as I already explained Ross’s insecurities are the result of what his wife did to him. being a lesbian wasn’t an excuse for cheating on him. if she didn’t love him or wasn’t sexually attracted to him or loved someone else and wanted to be with them. She should have been up front and honest with Ross not had an affair behind his back and cut him deep with betrayal - Yeah Ross does belittle Joey and Phoebe for not being as educated as him. Also all the other Friends punch down on Ross about various things including his job working with dinosaurs - I am 90% sure Ross NEVER advocated for Rachel to leave her job so she wouldn’t be with Mark - Ross was actually advised by Joey and Chandler to conceal his dalliance with that woman in the immediate wake of his and Rachel breaking up. Moroever concealing what he did when he just got his girlfriend back and didn’t want to lose her again is not an unreasonable human reaction for anyone to have. He could’ve gotten Rachel back waited until they were more stable and then told her the truth the way older couples don’t give that much of a fuck when they learn one of them had an affair like 50 years ago. - What Ross did in regards to lying about the divorce is near indefencible...again like the laundry list of things Rachel has herself also done but hasn’t got mental issues to excuse them

The barney stinson anology is just straight up wrong, they started to include him in more episodes as he was initially a background character to the main 4, however never once did HIMYM focus solely on barney as it was even told from teds perspective.

Paul Rudd was interviewed recently on Conan O’Briens Podcast and talked about being in only the last episode of Friends as a side character. He said when the cast and creators were all hugging and getting emotional about the show ending, he walked up and joined the group hug saying “Guys! What a ride!” He intentionally did it to be awkward because he’d literally only appeared in the one episode.

Kind of twisting the facts in your memory of Ross, your hatred is clouding your memory lol. Not that you are completely wrong, dude has issues - but he didn't tell his friends to lie about him sleeping with another girl after they broke up - he was going to tell Rachel and Joey and Chandler told him to lie and convinced him to chase down the grapevine of information. Also, he didn't come up with the list of Rachel's flaws -again, Joey and Chandler did - in fact Joey is the one that said she had chubby ankles, not Ross and Chandler just put it to the list without Ross even agreeing that was an issue. Then when they got busted for the list, they just let Ross take the hit for it. Not that Ross should have agreed to either of those, but your retelling is a bit disingenuous. He does have bad trust issues, they even rag on him for it in later episodes, talking about how he never cared about that stuff back in high school but after Carol he always had issues.

He always put himself out there for Rachel after the first time they dated. Ross tried to move on by saying hes with Julie now, but ended up dumping Julie anyway for Rachel because he loves her. Joey and Chandler wrote the list and suggested he give them pro's and con's to write down. You forgot one of the reasons was (about Julie) "She's not Rachel" He also cancelled a chance to be on TV to look after Rachel and didn't tell her about it. Despite him being uncomfortable with Carol being lesbian he ended up giving her away. We find out why ross didn't want Ben playing with barbies. Rachel always tried to mess ross relationships up (eg:bonnie shaving her head) that's manipulative. He broke up with Bonnie for Rachel and at 5:30am expected him to read her 18 page front and back letter she wrote. Gave him permission to date Bonnie and Jill but then hated the idea. Every time Ross tried to move on Rachel gets in the way and manipulates it her way. Julie, Bonnie, Emily, Jill...

I've not watched friends in a very long time. Probably not seen an episode since soon after it ended. I got all nostalgic seeing the clips and pictures of early seasons and started thinking maybe it's worth a watch... then the ross rant. It reminded me of the reasons I ended up disliking the show in later seasons. The characters went a bit farsical and the flaws got really noticeable. Or maybe I just got old enough to see clearer. *Omg, one thing about Ross that always annoyed me was that he always has a problem with Rachel dating or being with anyone else, even when he and Rachel weren't together. But during those same occasions, Rachel never seems to be upset about Ross being with someone else, like in Season 8 when Rachel is pregnant and Ross was with Mona. Rachel did not get all possessive and angry about that, even though Ross was the father of her unborn baby. But as soon as Ross finds out that Joey likes Rachel, he goes crazy.* I think Ross and Rachel ended up being such a toxic couple because Ross was always so jealous and possessive, and he didn't have any trust in Rachel, even though she was always faithful to him. He also tends to want to sleep with people right after a break up, but God forbid Rachel ever sleep with someone else after a break up (not a healthy habit even if you were "on a break") - since Ross was only worried about Rachel "cheating" on him, while snd even after they were officially dating. He's a major hypocrite.

Ironically enough, the seasons where Daniel and Grace left Danny and Steve actually wanted less screen time. Danny had to commute to Hawaii because he wanted spent time with his family in New York so he tried to bulk film his scenes and Steve was getting to a point where his action scenes was getting too much on his body. If they kept Danny dae Kim and grace park on the show I’m pretty sure they could have continued the show beyond season 10 with them as the new leads.

Never understood the hatred for ross, the guy was cheated on by his closeted lesbian wife but still choose to co-parent their baby, had rachel forcing him to break up with at least two GF and a wife for her while she continued to be in relationships in between their own to the extent of kissing her colleague the week she resumed work after maternity leave while ross was watching their kid. The guy had tenure and was a published researcher by mid 30's being one of the most successful friend in the group but never having any airs for the same, also lets not forget he chastised his parents often for treating him special at the expense of his sister; but lets all hate the guy because he tried his best to be there for his family and friends and was the most relate-able then his quirky and almost weird set of friends.
