Merci ! I discovered your show by searching reviews on Less Than Zero. I'm not a big novel reader but, trying to fix that, I started to read more recently and now I follow you, discovering what could be my next banned book to open.

De rien! Were very happy to hear that. You’ll be amazed how novels can open up your world and expense your sense of self if you stick with them. Glad you are subscribed. 😁

Bukowski was was never handed anything. While so many other writers had either rich spouses or parents to support them, Bukowski worked long hours at the USPS. Blue collar AF. Much respect and his novels a just solid enjoyable readings. Also, the chick in the vid is a goddamn snack

Bukowski ( as I would prescribe him to others ) will help You appreciate the small and simple things in life ; he will make the stale bread taste sweet ; return the raisin back into a grape ; and make your last drink of wine taste as good as the first .

This is a very interesting take on Bukowski’s writing! I do feel that Bukowski sometimes points out things we pass by in our ordinary lives that can be missed. Although he typically has a very depressing take on life, he will occasionally find beauty in the ugly moments. Thank you for the comment. 👍

A so-called "red flag" I would proudly have on my bookshelf. If you can't appreciate Bukowski you're not someone worth knowing. Like the saying goes, 'Art should comfort disturbed and disturb the comfortable.' To reduce his work,. His struggles in life, the up the downs, the laughter, the pain, to simply work for "lonely boys", is incredibly reductive and dismissive. Motivating countless artists who work some soul-crushing job to keep working on your passion in the off hours you have. Someone simply saying "rise above all the past trauma and pain", oh gee thanks. As if it was that simple

that wasn'a en entire book about writing. it was a collection put out by his publisher after he died, it had nothing to do with him. but he did write about writing in many of his poems as much as anything else.

Mistake on my part - I’d been reading ‘on writing’ and forgot that it was just a compilation of his non-fic stuff, and not necessarily something he intended to publish. But I stand by the sentiment of what I was trying to say - that his whole ‘I don’t care about anything’ persona is kind of a put on when he was clearly cared a lot - especially about writing - enough that his letters/thoughts on the subjects literary fill a book. You can’t claim nihilism and be an artist at the same time - because you are creating.

Yes! I loved this depressing little book. Was looking for an excuse to cover it because it was hard to find info about it being banned - will do some more research to see, but either way we will cover this book. It’s too good to pass up.

Hi, thaks, I really enjoyed this discussion and the well crafted video. I, too, keep on returning to Bukowski"s poetry. As one of you pointed out, that's where you find the humanity of the outwardly cynical and tough guy. Besides the poem Bluebird, I'd mention Nirvana as a good example of that other, carefully hidden side.
@bannedbookclub
@bannedbookclub 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for recommending Nirvana, had not seen this one. What a contrast between the voice in this poem and the usual novel voice. We love all of Bukowski’s work, but at the end of the day readers need more optimism than pessimism from their books. And when that optimism comes from a guy with as bad a life as Bukowski it feels real, powerful, hard earned. But it’s rare.

How is bukowski a red flag? Using that basis every rated R movie should be a read flag right? Enjoy the show tho!
@bannedbookclub
@bannedbookclub Жыл бұрын
He's a red flag for a lot of the more "progressive" readers of his stuff. Around the time we reviewed the book there was a tweet from some writer/columnist (I think her name was Jess McHugh) that was getting a lot of traction - something about 'the biggest red flags on someones bookshelf' - and Bukowski was listed as one of them. I thought that was funny because he's one of my favorite writers, but full disclosure, I made an effort in this episode to insulate myself from him as much as possible because I was applying to some highly woke schools at the time and I didn't want something I said on the internet about Bukowski to get misconstrued and hurt my application. I plan to cover more of his stuff in the future because he's an important writer and deserves more of a fair shake than I could give at the time. Hope that clarifies things a bit, thanks for watching

Just finished reading the book, and I somehow found it small in scale and not as exciting as "Post office" or "Women"... Didn`t leave much of an impression to me, but probably because I read it last of his novels. Anyhow, you guys dug deep into Bukowski`s character and the psychology behind it, so BIG like for that. Just keep up the good work! And one last thing: Rafaella, damn You`re beautiful! As Bukowski says: "...the end of it all". 😀❤ Cheers 🍺

He’s not fantasizing about being a capitalist.. he’s fantasizing about living his own life away from the sector and not being confined to the 9-5..
@bannedbookclub
@bannedbookclub Жыл бұрын
Agree that breaking out of the 9-5 cycle was a big deal to him - but in the section we were referring to he explicitly mentions how good it would feel to be a boss, fire people, make money off of their work, and abuse the kind of authority that a capitalist system would afford him. it was a dark power-trip fantasy in the context of capitalism, which was interesting given how much he hated it

Why was the lady, not sure of the name, obsessed with his sex life? A bit awkward. Bukowski is a great writer and I enjoy his philosophy, drinking a straight shot of cognac for him

Twenty-something middle class Anglos interpreting Bukowski with pop psychology, and disturbed by the dirtiness and poverty and meanness of Bukowski’s life. He should have been a nicer guy to satisfy such readers?

This is a great episode about a terrible book. I actually just didn't like factotum. I like Bukowski but this one just didn't do it for me. I thought the book would some sort of critique of labor rights. Plus yeah the stripper scene at the end seemed odd. Also I don't think that he had some sort of persona or some facade of macho nonsense. We can't both tell men to express themselves but then chastise them once they do or weaponize the information that they vent to us. Masculinity isn't a cage or some sort of hindrance.
