The Cleaver family was wholesome yet relatable. They didn’t outshine others such as the Bradys or the Andersons in terms of ratings, but they’ll always be an important part of TV history. One of the major reasons for this was the cast who portrayed him. Tony’s life could have been completely different if he hadn’t followed a family friend to an audition. The producers took notice of his athletic build. They knew they’d found the boy to play Beaver’s older brother Wally. He rose to fame and became a favorite of the girls during his time on the show. He followed it up by guest starring in a few shows and even went behind the camera to direct and write. He returned as Wally in Leave it to Beaver revivals decades later. He couldn’t escape the name, even at home. His doting wife even once called him Wally!
The success didn’t make him rich or happy. He suffered from depression in his 20s but worked through it by making a video to help others who felt the same. His battle with liver cancer later forced him out of the spotlight. He began pursuing other passions such as sculpting. He also spent every moment he could with his children and grandchildren, even in hospice care. Linda was so distressed during that time that she delivered an announcement of his death. The world was shocked that one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood was gone, but that’s not the end of the story.

I had a girlhood infatuation with Tony Dow when I was about 10 years old. I wanted him to be MY big brother as I had no brothers. He came to my city acting in a play in the late 60’s (West Side Story) and my mom took me. After the performance, Tony was signing autographs on stage at a table. My mom encouraged me to get an autograph so up on stage I went. I found myself standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF TONY DOW. My legs shook, my eyes filled with tears. I handed him my playbill and he spoke softly to me and smiled warmly when he handed my playbill back to me. What a sweet man. RIP Tony. ❤️

Watching him over the years and how he was the guy everyone liked and looked to is refreshing to know he was the person throughout his life unchanged and still the man, people wished they could be and know. I had the honor of meeting Tony twice when he was at a friends art gallery. The first time was a meet and greet sort of thing. The second time was at an exhibit after everyone had left. I didn't personally know Tony but we had mutual friends, one of them being Paul Petersen from the Donna Reed Show, who was very close with Tony. But I do have one memory of him hanging out with a friend and working on classic cars and race cars. He loved tinkering under the hood until the motor just purred and then taking the car out for a spin. Everyone I know thought well of Tony and he truly did have a good head on his shoulders. Many commented how he helped them survive past their TV show cancellations and becoming civilians again, offering sage advice on how to change their perspectives. Always a champion for former child performers struggling with adulthood and the issues of being a "former."

Tony really brought the Wally Cleaver character to life with very convincing acting. He was my favorite on a show full of very talented performers. I still watch LITB almost every day. My favorite episodes featuring Wally are when Wally gets his license, Wally buys a car, the one where he pours melted ice cream on Lumpys head and down Eddies sweater, and when he takes the movie ticket seller girl out on a date. There are others, but these are favorites. A good person both on and off the set. Rest in Peace Tony. Thanks for posting.

The show was pure magic. The innocence in the way the actors delivered their lines has never been topped. Watch the wallet lady episode, there is a bit at the end where Beaver is trying to get his clock radio to wake him up with Indian music and Wally has to set him straight, explaining to Beaver that he might be woken up with a commercial or a weather report and Tony's delivery is pure gold. Nothing from that era even comes close. Leave it to Beaver remains the greatest TV show ever about kids. Everything else from that era looks like kid actors reading lines but NOT on Leave it to Beaver.

I was lucky to have met Tony Dow close to 60 years ago after seeing him in a play in the Chicago suburbs. My mother took a photo of him with me. We rushed to have the photo developed and came back the next night for him to autograph it. I still have it. Tony was a real treasure. Such a nice guy. Just tonight I found a program from "So Long, Stanley" that starred both Tony and Jerry Mathers ("the Beav") in Scottsdale in 1980. And they both autographed the program for me. I'm always running across stuff I forgot I had.

The Leave It To Beaver show I most identified with and remember, was the episode when Wally decided he was old enough to buy his own suit by himself. And came home with a suit that looked and fitted very badly. His father going back to the men’s shop with him to exchange it reminded me of the time I bought a sports jacket and my mother immediately voiced her disapproval and the next day the jacket went back. But my mother just wanted my money back after she told the owner without mercy what she thought of the jacket! Poor Guy! Best Regards, Richard

Tony Dow was a positive role model and mentor for the "older brother and younger brother relationship" in that television series. Wally always had a way of wisecracking a Beaver situation, often to the dismay of both Ward and June. Kind of a character trademark. I'm impressed by the fact that even in his advanced years he still had a youthful look that very much resembled that of his LITB (Litbee?) years. May he, June, Ward, Eddie and Lumpy rest eternally in blissful peace. They all did a heck of a job here on earth -- pleasing the rest of us.

Always liked the way Dow portrayed Wally. Best episodes- in the early episodes Wally and beaver are supposed to put their money in a school savings account and instead spend the money on Ward purchasing him an expensive hunting jacket. When June tells Ward to take off the jacket because it’s warm in the house, he states he is comfortable and keeps the coat on. Makes you feel good knowing how Ward must have felt and the boys knew instinctively what they did, also the episode where Wally takes Julie Foster to the White Fox restaurant and forgets his wallet and Ward calls the restaurant to set Wally up as a big shot, allowing him to sign for the meal. The waiter played off Wally’s confused look perfectly and Julie thinks Wally a real man of the world. Cheryl Holdridge was stunning in her beauty, Wally was a lucky guy but decided on Mary Ellen Rodgers in the long run god knowsxwhy

I loved watching reruns of leave it to beaver. When I was a kid back in the 70’s after school me and my sis would watch Batman, Gilligans island, the Munsters and leave it to beaver. My favorite episode was when Wally and beaver left the water in the bathtub on too long and it overflowed. They used all kinds of towels to dry everything and when a neighbor came over and saw all the wet towels Wally said, motioning to Beaver, he’s hard to dry! Too funny!

Tony Dow💕 So many admirable qualities friend being one and a good husband. I watch the show still because it is my all time favorite. They had something other shows didn’t. The left out a timeline because they the writers wanted it to be for all time. They got that wish. The cast stayed close as they had an unbreakable bond. Though Tony had no acting experience he was a natural they gave him some great lines and he nailed them.

I think of Lauren often, and am pained at how empty the house must seem. Lauren and Tony were neighbors in Venice Beach and came to brunch in 1984 during the Olympics. We lived right up the street from where the marathon would run. Lots of great characters in that neighborhood. One of my best memories.

Tony (as Wally) always had these half-kid, half-adult explanations for everything to do with life and ' the Beavs. He, Wally, really held the show together. As the youngest in my family I would have loved to have Wally as an older brother

I would see Tony and his wife many times while riding the Catalina Express boats back and forth between Catalina and Long Beach/San Pedro terminals. His family had a residence on the island. I would be visiting my grandmother (106) and my aunt (86) who also lived on the island for almost 40 years. Always wanted to chat with them on the boat, but decided not to interrupt their privacy. He was one of my heroes in the Leave it to Beaver days, at that time I also had a younger brother about the same age as the Beaver. My brother was always getting me in trouble also! Only once in a while it might have been my fault, maybe………

My most memorable episode of LITB was when Wally's mother fixed him up on a blind date but didn't tell him. Wally was furious and Tony Dow really amped it up, trying to reach up toward the father's height, while hollering. First it was his mother then he turned upon his father. I'd never seen Wally so ticked off. I smile whenever I think of it.

I'm 74 and I watched every episode of Leave it to Beaver during it's six year run from 1957 to 63. I am a year younger than Jerry Mathers so I could relate to some of the situations that Beaver got into just by being a naive but curious boy ( though I never climbed up a billboard to see if a bowl held real soup). Tony also played the part of what was a typical teen in the 50's though I could never understand how he could have a relationship with Eddie and Lumpy, I admired Tony not only for his genuine presentation of Wally but also for his athletic abliity. My two favorite sports were biking and swimming as a kid and he was a champion diver. Later I happened to watch a show about his sculpture art and the home that he designed and built . It was a stunner.beautiful in all respects. When "Beaver" returned to cable I again had a chence to relive my childhood and I watched every episode again. My wife who did not grow up with TV and who was more social than I was as a kid, couldn't understand my interest in the show, but my kids seemed to enjoy it and the Still the Beaver" show as well. My sincere condolences to Tony's family and all the fans of his . He is missed.

Thats the only times I would see him also, at Catalina while I’d be visiting my grandmother and aunt that lived there full time. I’d always see Tony and his wife while we all were all communicating to or from the island. I’m just like you, as I probably seen them 30-40 times over the years. I wanted sooooooo much to speak with them, but decided it wouldn’t be very proper. They were always reading a book or sleeping while the vibes from the engines would put me to sleep also. Miss Tony and the island tremendously nowadays. They don’t make actors like him anymore…………

I was born in 1949 so I'm just a few months younger than 'The Beaver', Jerry Mathers. I grew up watching and loving 'Leave it to Beaver', and still watch on occasion. I have all the episodes on DVD, and my all-time favorite is, "Wally's Practical Joke". When Wally, Eddie, and Lumpy were more involved in the show toward the end of it's run, 1962-'63, is when it was best for me. I loved the teenage hi-jinks that went on between those three characters. Tony Dow was correct. When we were growing up in the late 1950s and early '60s there wasn't much talk at all about drugs, guns, etc. Our lives revolved more around girls, cars, music and just having a good time without having to look into drugs, drink, or crime to find it.
