Western cushion foundations do indeed suck. Asian cushions are affordable, have superior skincare/ingredients and usually come with a refill and an antibacterial puff. Unfortunately I'm too dark to use them but I have friends whose skin actually improved from their cushions!

honestly, western branded cushion foundations IMO generally suck. they're too expensive and aren't as good as quality as the korean cushions (which are so affordable). cushion foundations are GREAT for touchups for your makeup bc most have spf in it which is super important if you're out in the sun all day. IMO, again, most ppl don't care about spf but it's really ideal for me to have a cushion. sun damage is SO bad for your skin and I ain't got time for future wrinkles!

What I don't get is why people buy cushion foundations but don't use the sponge/air puff it comes with. You might as well buy a regular foundation.

I think it's because of the thinner formulation. You get the same coverage as a bottle foundation with less product and it looks and feels like skin, not makeup (unless you are layering it).

the key point of cushion foundation is the air puff and formula. With these two u can achieve the dewy, thin, hydrating and skin-like finish. So I dont get it when people refill it with a regular foundation or apply it with brushes .

Maybe you can try cushions again Wayne, but this time stick to Korean brands because it's authentic, reasonably priced and products are really good. Korean brands ALWAYS, ALWAYS include a refill when you purchase. They also have cushion blushes and eyeliners and concealers. I would love to try them but my skincare products made me oily and I can't afford to have more dewiness and shine in my face. Lol. Or a good idea for you is to try ALL KOREAN PRODUCTS!! Then make a video and tell us your thoughts ;) hope it will not be a pain to have it delivered to the UK.

And if he isn't into the abundance of cutsie packaging (in the West, people always assume that cute means cheap and childlike: not true in east Asia!), he should definitely try MISSHA. They're very elegant and youthful with their packaging and formulas.

This is why I only stick with korean cushions. Average cost of korean ones are $15 to $25 USD and they come with 1 extra refill + cushion applicator. I like the Etude House and Laneige. I have no idea why the western ones (Bobbi Brown, YSL) cost so much more than regular foundation AND don't come with a refill. It's just outrageous.

ABSOLUTELY! The Missha Magic Cushion is so far one of the best I've tried and it's around $19. Not to mention the Laneige, which is also great, and even though it's around $30, it includes the refill. I just paid $47 for the Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Cushion... hopefully it's worth the price...!

agree! Korean or Asian products are better. cushions or Creams, from BB to CC. The only downside is they don't carry a lot of shade ranges.Asian porsducts are marketed not just purely make ups but as skincares.

If you think that product is worth it, trust me you will find better and good quality ones for a way cheaper price. Korea has always started the trend for cushion foundations. If you look closely, US has been copying most of their products as in bb creams, this and many others. Honestly the Lancôme costs an arm because it's just seriously the name brand.

Korean cushions > Western cushions. 💕 Pros of Korean: Affordable, comes with a refill and with another applicator sponge (sometimes), and great quality of the sponge and the case. Cons: Shades are limited to 2/4 colors Pros of Western: Various shades Cons: Too expensive for too little product and the overall quality sucks. When you compare a Western sponge applicator to a Korean you'll notice that the sponge absorbs too much product and you waste a lot of the foundation unlike the Korean one. The case itself is cheap JUST like the Korean one that are $15 however they are so much cheaper than Clinique and other high end brands. Overall, I agree that WESTERN cushions are too overpriced but I would recommend Korean cushions if you are in their shade range.

Hi, Wayne. I am so glad that you point this out. Actually, cushion foundations started from South Korea (SK). I used to love using cushion foundation in SK since it gives dewy finish and very comfy to fix makeup during the day. All the cosmetic brand in SK provide product with refill product when we purchase cushion foundation, so I have never felt it is waste of money. However, I always complain of cushion foundation in US because they are so expensive. I am really glad that you mention this today, and all cosmetic brand in Europe and USA show know this.

Cushion foundation normally contains sunscreen and serum to achieve more natural glowing look. It's fast, one step foundation. I brought the Korean brand and not too pricey at Asia.Hera and sulwhasoo are my favorite cushion brand.☺️ My main concern is you can't keep it "clean". It's a sponge full of foundation and leave it in a jar. Every time you use it gets oxides a little bit...and bacteria...so you have too run fast!

for brands that have ventured into south-east asian territories like Laneige, they have developed South-east asian exclusive colors to cater to the Indian market. This is even more true in my experience with the drugstore brands. I have a travel make up kit for "emergencies" that I keep in my purse which consists of an extra tube of my favorite liner, mascara, concealer, travel brushes, and compacts of blush and powder but I've realized I wanted a foundation. Looking for one that was inexpensive to try it before getting a good one I realized I could only find 1 in the entire makeup section of my nearest drugstore. 1 brand had a cushion and there were a total of 6 or 8 choices for color. It was bleak. The price was even slightly more than a bottle of foundation or a compact of powder and they don't sell refills for it. I couldn't believe that with how popular these have become that I couldn't find any others. I LOVE the hack you mentioned. that's just brilliant though I have to imagine the drugstore brand has found a way to use glue or some other means to prevent it from working with theirs. But one with a refill would probably have a better chance of it working.

Hi Wayne I totally agree with you on content size. I refuse to buy a cushion foundation simply on content and price whether it high end or drug store. My liquid foundation would last longer than the cushion foundation.

I agree!! I bought the L'Oreal cushion foundation and while the foundation itself is pretty good, I was hesitant to buy at first due to the price to product ratio (I waited for a sale and had a coupon).

Thanks for this. I have been debating whether to switch to these products. Wow to know that the price is the same as a new one than a refill. Ridiculous!

Thanks Wayne. I too thought the foundation was special. I noticed that Korean skincare and makeup is becoming more and more popular but they don't pay half of what we do here in the US. So I am off to purchase the Lancome cushion foundation as I like theirs the best. Big Hugs and Blessings

Maybe this has been addressed but you get two 15ml cushions totaling 30mls. Right? My Amore Pacific is my HG with two refills it lasts me months. Am I reading this wrong?

buy a cushion compact and cushion applicator (set of 5) from amazon, then you can take ur favorite foundation on the go! if u r afraid of product drying up, then don't fill in too much at a time! I've doing this for almost a year now

honestly i think this situation only happens to western-brand cushions. Korean brands are usually cheaper and most Asian makeup prices are not as cheap as western makeup even having the same brand like maybelline. For example, a product that retails for USD$6.00 cost HKD$129 (around USD$16.5) So maybe that's why Asian brands' cushion are so popular in Asia area.

Asian cushions are way more affordable. They vary is price because some are packed with serums and essences. Problem is they rarely come in more than two shades. Definitely made for Asian skin tones. They even have kits so you can turn your fav liquid foundation into a cushion. Just add in your serum and sunscreen. DIY savings right there!

I think you are meant to clean the sponge with which you apply. Nothing unhygienic about the foundation soaked cushion. If you load up the sponge with which you apply and don't dip back in, if that makes sense, there is no cross contamination. I tried one but have not repurchased due to cost, but I do like the concept.

Hi handsome I used to think they sucked too because they all looked so grey on me, until I tried the Sulwhasoo one. It's a bit higher end but worth it! It's quite full coverage so i only press the puff into the cushion to get the slightest product. But when applying you gotta really press it in as you dab it into the skin, instead of just tapping. Well that's what works for me at least.

Yes I totally agree, I got the lo'real lumi cushion at the drugstore its $15 and you only get 15mL. If it was regular size it would be $30 which is outrageous for a drugstore light coverage foundation.

I love the convenience factor as I do my makeup at work. I store it my products in my locker and apply in front of the bathroom mirror with products lined up on a little ledge. Compact liquid/serum foundations are just easier to use for how and where I apply my makeup. Also, I use a flat topped foundation brush as I hate the sponges. No, I'm not a fan of the price markup, but I'm hooked nonetheless. Thanks for your reviews and sharing your honest thoughts. : )

i bought the loreal lumi cushion foundation and the wee pad it came with was just a pain to use so i started using a brish and got much better results so i loved it at first but after a while (a week or so) it didnt feel as though the brush was picking anything up, i was told to get tweezers and flip the cushion (which was messy) and i could see there was still a fair amount of product in the bottom but after 1 or 2 uses it did the same so i reverted back to my old foundation

Hey Wayne, I have a question. Because of my fair skin tone, I need to mix my foundations anyways. Now I was wondering, if I "premix" my foundation and put them in a cushion case, how long can I keep it? If I make it as sterile as possible? I'd even like to add some skincare to the mix, but I suppose that mixture won't last at all? Or would it? Anyone with tips on the issue? Thanks

Wayne, I agree with you. I do most of the time lol :) I would like to get my hands on and try out the Koren product called Ah Much Real My Cushion blusher. It is a liquid blush which comes in a tube with a cushion applicator on it. It is made by a company called Peripera.....I am not sure how long these have been out for. Have you ever tried? I have also heard that Korea will be making concealer cushions as well....this reminds me of the Maybelline Instant Age rewind eraser concealer. xx

Totally agree. And some have even less. My IT Cosmetics CC+ Veil Beauty Fluid cushion contains 10ml. A whopping 2 teaspoons! Pisses me off to no end. I'll be refilling with my Guerlain foundation once I use this up, which won't be anytime soon bc I'm not a big fan of it. Especially for the price IT Cosmetics is charging AND the fact that they've now been bought out by Loreal *shit* Regarding refilling, I'd suggest cleaning the entire cushion out with soap & warm water first (pop the inner thingy out of the sealed cushion thingy if possible), then briefly soaking in high proof drinking alcohol (95%), allowing it to air dry afterwards, then refilling using a small squeeze bottle that you've transferred some of your foundation over to. You can refill with as much product as you want, within reason of course. You don't want the thing leaking.

I like the two Korean ones we sell at Sephora the most because there's two cushions when you buy it (amore pacific had a problem with their packaging so they are reformulating them for also their sister brand Laneige) so with them you do get the standard 30ml because when you buy it you get the refill in the box. Amore pacific one is more costly because of the fact that I believe that one has bamboo sap/water instead of water. I think the Laneige one in Canada is only $46 though (so less than a bottle of MUFE foundation). I would love to hear your opinion on the colour correcting cushions from Lancôme, personally I don't understand them but I've heard that the yellow one is good for people that are fair with acne.
