Thanks for looking the thing over. I was just blown away that, while this happened and yes I got duped into buying the shiny thing with the stupid new features, I got sent in 4 different directions on how to get the thing replaced. Between Telus, Samsung, the Insurance Company and the shop I bought it at, none of them wanted to help me. They all tried to pass the buck. At the end Telus said they would exchange it for something else. I'm hoping to get my hands on a Nokia 3310 No more bells or whistles for this guy.

8:20 While one could use radioactive cesium decay to measure time, cesium 133, the isotope commonly used to set my watch, is not radioactive. The layer directly under the screen protector is the capacitive touch sensor layer. It probably WAS the screen protector that killed it. Either chemically or with that tiny amount of extra leverage on the bend on closing.

On the z flip 5, Samsung applies a screen protector, and says it is not removable. They do advertise 1 free replacement (of the protector, not the screen) if it becomes damaged. I had the 4 and that had a screen protector from factory that was advertised as removable but not recommended. It had bubbling after a few months and I took it off. Later I had cracking in the hinge section. Samsung did replace it under warranty, and I later traded it in for a flip 5. I wonder if I will have the same issues with the 5.

When i saw that phone for the first time the only words i could think of was "Work Hardening". it doesn't matter what its made out of, you bend any material enough times its going to become brittle and snap.

from what I've seen of these foldy phones, the design doesn't make a proper crease in the display, it's more like a loop
@maudiojunky2 ай бұрын
Glass isn't subject to work hardening. Its material properties are very unlike plastics and metals. You'll find that some semi-crystalline and all amorphous plastics tend to exhibit more repeated stress failures than other plastics though - try breaking a polyester (semi-crystalline but generally highly-oriented) water bottle by flexing it repeatedly vs. snapping off its HDPE pop lid hinge. We've all seen similar repeated stress failures in polypropylene, more weakly semi-crystalline, and ABS, amorphous, but again glass is more like good polyester if you want to draw a comparison for fatigue. Polyester with a bi-axially oriented semi-crystalline structure (Mylar brand name) is what's used to make modern drum heads for musical instruments and can be subjected to tens of thousands of wear cycles with almost no degradation unless the drummer exceeds the material's stress limit - wear actually tends to come from the constant tuning stress stretching the material over time or a harder than designed for impact. All that being said, there is clearly a failure mechanism the manufacturer is still working out here, but it's almost certainly not work hardening.
@MrPoopnoddy2 ай бұрын
According to Samsung, it's good for 100 openings per day for at least 5 years. I have one because phones today are fucking massive and they don't fit into my motorcycle jacket pockets. So far, mine's fine and dandy.
@franknielsen66202 ай бұрын
As long as you stay inside the materials elasticity or is it plasticity it should be fine thats why the wings on an airplane can move up and down so much without breaking. Go over and you get into work hardening.

I have used this principle to stack beer cans to the ceiling. You start with a "loose" column of stacked cans. The very last can is twisted so to make a spring between the loose stacked cans and the ceiling. This will cause compression throughout the entire stack. The cans will act like "rope" to the point you can form the stack in different configurations. Flick cigarette butts at it and it will not fail because the stack is under compression.

I've had a zfold for over 3 years. My wife has had the flip 3 and flip4. I have seen others at my work used the flip for years. I have noticed an interesting pattern that causes the inside folding of the display area to crack. Many had the factory display cover bubble up and would remove it completely. Those that did would often have the inisde crease crack within six to 8 months. I was guilty of the same and satrted to notice my crease in the fold start to crack at the outer edges. At this point, I installed a display cover back, and after over a year, it stopped the cracking from spreading further. I think Samsung should mention that the display cover it comes with isn't just there to protect it from scratching, but it seems to provide some kind of structural support that prevents the center of the display from cracking. Opening it when the device is too cold can also do this. I've used mine multiple times on Prudhoe bay Alaska, but i try not opening it when its extremily cold out.

The fold is better for this reason since you can use the front screen until the device is normal operating temp. Im in the caribou where iv used it ice fishing or laid in in the snow under the car or even had it welding. If it's open and it's cold, you leave it open till it warms up id almost argue it would be common sence tho that's not a frequent trait of many these days lol 😅. Don't know how long your buddy has had his, but I've been using mine for about 3 months now and it's working pretty good. I have been running a Fold 3 for 2.5 years. Only had to change the factory screen protector 3 times. I have no plans to go back to a non folding phone. Also it's only the outer protector that is "glass". When the screen protector is removed the underlying screen is very soft. After all the best tablet you can have is the one in your pocket.

I have some weird ability not to destroy my phone...still rocking the S7, can't remember what year that is from...it's in perfect condition. I could trick somebody into thinking it is new, but it's been my daily driver the whole time. Never had a case. Constantly in my pocket during shop abuse. The only time I broke one is because I fell off the third floor and landed on it. Apparently I do that bounce back thing if you drop me from high enough.

for normal shaped Devices, i think the options out there for Metal Bumper Cases, are a nice middleground. they're hardly more than 1mil thick, and just around the edges, so it covers the important stuff like the Corners getting whacked or the Screen scraping on flat surfaces - without really getting in the way of the Device, nor making the bad cooling even worse. i'm all for that style of 'Case', thesedays.

The whole screen is plastic. That's the big deal about OLED. That is the factory protector, you're not supposed to pull that one off.
@dougsundseth2303Ай бұрын
Destin's video explicitly shows that it's not a rebound effect that causes the second break (though that was Feynman's speculated cause). It's more complex than that, relating to a propagating wave that increases _inward_ curvature at the second break point.
@waltermayer34252 ай бұрын
The screen protector probably put a bunch of extra tension in the surface of the screen thus the catastrophic failure. I believe the metallic foil behind the screen is arnavar. It has very high fatigue resistance. Ideal for folding screens.

The phone's design makes a lot more sense if you realize it is not a phone, it is a status symbol. It happens to also do phone (and computer) things, but that wasn't the primary design goal.

Watching this on a year old Flip 4 in an Otterbox case... its the only phone I've had in more than a decade that made it past 6 months without a cracked glass.... I work construction and drive float trucks often.... leaning over trailer sides and crawling around when chaining down is what usually cracks my phones.... when this one is folded up in my pocket the glass doesn't wind up pressed up on the edge of anything that would break it.
