The fairies visit Elise (Florence Hoath) and Frances (Elizabeth Earl) in their bedroom.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Two young girls who believe that fairies are real attempt to prove it to the world in this drama based on actual events. In 1917, there is little to be happy about in the Wright household in West Yorkshire, England. Polly (Phoebe Nicholls) and her 12-year-old daughter Elsie (Florence Hoath) are still grieving over the death of Elsie's younger brother, and Polly's niece Frances (Elizabeth Earl) has come to stay with them after her father was declared missing in action during World War I. Polly longs for some sort of proof that there is a life beyond our own, while the two girls ardently believe in fairies and enthusiastically study legend and lore. One day, Elsie and Frances produce photographs of fairies that they claim were playing in their garden; Polly believes that they are real, and soon the snapshots attract international attention. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Peter O'Toole), author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries and a confirmed spiritualist, declares the photos "as genuine as the King's beard," while illusionist Harry Houdini (Harvey Keitel), who has devoted much time and energy to exposing phony mediums and psychics, takes a more skeptical view. While Fairy Tale: A True Story presents the appearance of the fairies as fact, analysis of the photographs proved them to be fakes (especially after the same fairies were discovered as illustrations in a children's book published before the photos were taken). The real-life Elsie Wright admitted late in life that the fairy photos were a hoax performed as a "little joke" and that she was always surprised that so many people believed them.

Sir Arthur Canon Doyle became very close to this story because his father who was in a home for the elderly, had mentioned these exact same fairies. Had told Doyle about them. This world is big enough for everything. We know that all myths based on some truth somewhere.

There's a few things I'm constantly correcting people on, in subjects like: 1 - *UK cities* and their populations, which can easily be checked by downloading the latest figures from the *ONS.* 2 - *Popular British TV shows* which can easily be checked by looking at the viewing figures on *BARB.* 3 - *Popular British Songs* which can easily be checked by *Official Charts.* 4 - *British Filming Locations* a lot of which can be found on *IMDB* etc. What most people believe to be popular, are usually the opposite when compared to the facts, but no-one likes listening to facts anymore, they only like listening to opinions of themselves, critics, award ceremony judges, journalists, celebrities in general etc.

That last sentence is meaningless. All myths are "based on truth" in the sense that they were often honest attempts to explain the world, or were distorted retellings of things that actually happened. That doesn't make them true in any useful or meaningful way.

Even if the world were big enough for everything -whatever that even means - the Cottingley fairies were confirmed to be a hoax more than a decade before this movie came out.

This is the first movie I remember seeing in theatres - I would have been almost 4 years old. (I actually thought Bug's Life was the first one I saw for a long time, because I'd forgotten the title of this movie and only realized it came out in late 1997 when I rediscovered it years later). All I can remember is that it involved fairies and there were scenes near a river/waterfall in the forest. Never knew it was about the Cottingley Fairies until adulthood. Now I'm thinking of checking it out and seeing if any of the scenes reawaken any memories in me.

You're right, the Cottingley fairies were a hoax. It was always suspected by some people, and it was finally confirmed in the early 80s.

I have pictures of a certain real life fairy but this certain fairy would only show up in my daughters picture by herself , I could not believe what. I was seeing so at that point I decided to go through the rest of my photos and ,sure enough the fairy was in several pictures with my daughter who was young girl at the time , I still to this day have a few pictures of the fairy with my daughter , I made the mistake of letting people take off with them to get check out , I am 100 Percent sure that Yes ,the fairies are real

@@aafiyakhan8094 : Yes and is a very delicate subject , I was only 4 years when I saw one like 1 foot tall playing under a rocking chair that was in my room, it was about 2 p.m. when I saw this little person playing and playing with the bars of the rocking chair, I didn't dare to move fearing it would disappear but it kept playing and rolling over, when it realized I was watching he smile and said to me " what's going on and went under my bed and that was the beginning , my brother wasn't born yet, he was 8 years older than me .

@@aafiyakhan8094: not the same one, they let you see them if they want to, I have a picture of myself with one of them flying above my head, I live in California and my son took me to Big Bear up in the mountain and in the way back I got sick and ask my son to make a stop because I wanted to vomit so he did and took a picture of me after I vomit that silly boy and when he was taking it he said, " Mom something like a small creature passed flying over your head and when we looked at the picture there it was, very bright with a lot of light, I'm going to find the picture and if is ok with you I'll send it to you., just contact me, I'm in fb under the same name.

So I am a Fae.fae's are children that have two familys. One is a human family like normal. One is a fairy faimly. I am a princess in my fae family. Becuse my fairy mom is a Queen in the fairy realm. Queen Madile. So if your a fae then you have two moms and two dads and sometimes in human world you have only two siblings. But in fae realm you could have up to about 13 siblings. I am one of 13 siblings. My fae name is different then my human name. My fae name is raconsusma but my nickname is the name of an animal called racon. So be careful if your a fae!

I'm not sure if I ever watched this as a kid or not, but clearly not as this is based on a true story from 1917-1921. Two girls from *Cottingley, Bingley, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England* took some photos of some fairies they had cut out of a book, and claimed they were real. They finally admitted all the photos were fake apart from one, in the 1990's, however they claimed they had seen real fairies in *Bradford Beck.* *Arthur Conan Doyle* (aka the creator of Sherlock Holmes) believed that fairies were real, so he promoted the girls story.

It's both hilarious and sad that this movie portrayed the fairies as real and the girls as truthful, even though they admitted the photos were fake over a _decade_ before the movie was made. And then had the audacity to subtitle it "A True Story".
