@Rhys P you're jaded by today's standards of music. In 1995/1996, women were JUST starting to really get aggressive and create music that was more than just "I like a boy, I hope he likes me too" kinds of songs. When "You Oughta Know" came out, it was like an explosion went off! This was when Lilith Fair came to be, and Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Fiona Apple, the Indigo Girls, Paula Cole, Alanis, and more were writing brutally honest songs about heartbreak, anger, grief, revenge....being raped, being molested....it was a MASSIVE time for women, and I was so proud to come of age in that moment in pop culture. You have no clue how devastating it is to see how far backwards women's role models have fallen. We went from extremely talented women clawing and fighting for all they had to Kardashians. We currently have a young generation of females who think "empowerment" means that the rich man likes your boob job better and is gonna "take care of you". Oh and Jagged Little Pill had a shit ton of HITS. You Oughta Know, Ironic, Head over Feet, Hand in My Pocket, You Learn... every single song, including the hidden track, felt like ANTHEMS. Teenage and young adult women really related to the themes. It sold a bajillion copies. It was that big! Sorry for the novel. I'm a writer, can't help it!!

@Rhys P yep. Just minored in music theory and composition, with a year of graduate studies completed. 11 years of symphonic orchestra experience. Spent 2 years interning at 2 record labels in A and R. So not only can I play multiple instruments, but i also understand musical composition and theory. My major/degree is in journalism, so from the standpoint of straightforward lyrical prowess, I can speak on that from a standpoint of education- not "i just like this album". If the album that reaches more people, effectively and succinctly covers more topics, and is considered relatable by a massive segment of the population, is the better written and more sonically cohesive production, well then you've got your checklist and your winner. I'm cognizant of MC and her songwriting skills. I own all her work. Yes the songs are good, but for the time it wasn't groundbreaking. It wasn't fresh. And Daydream is one of my favorite MC albums. Just because my opinion differs from yours doesn't make it wrong, and you kids today need to learn that. Considering how polite I was to you, calmly and respectfully explaining why I FEEL JLP was better written, and rather than sharing any information, you came back with insults tells me all I need to know about who I am talking to. Ciao.

By 1999 Mariah had more number one songs on Billboard Hot 100 and had sold more records than every other female artist... Including Whitney.... OSD was number one for like....MONTHS. I do NOT understand. I know she lost Album of the Year to "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morrisette....and Im a huge Alanis fan... that one was a tough call. The Grammys should be ashamed of their behind-the-scenes politics, not honoring one of world's most revered singer-songwriters at one of her pinnacles when she deserved Album of the Year for Daydream. Being married to psycho Mottola doens't help either, when no one likes him, they jealous of Mariah but don't know the hell she's going through. As Rocky said, the Grammys are "Boeing" ROFL! I don't wanna put any woman against another woman but please, just stop trying to campare Céline or Whitney to her just because she came before. Have you ever heard someone succeed to sound like Mariah Carey? If you did please link me a video or something because no one has ever come close to her magnificent voice.
