Got 2 of those at a flea market. The lady I got them from wasn't sure they were real and my wife was the one that picked them up. Only paid $7.50 each so I thought it was worth the risk. I kept the other one for future reference. Thanks for all you do! It was neat to see the inside of the coin and for you to prove with better methods it was actually fake. Keep up the good work!

I ended up with a fake, weighed right, size right, looked right, but ping test sounded dead, took it to a Jewlers to be gunned and it came up as zinc copper nickel 🧐 no silver to be found, managed to get money back and kept the Morgan as a good fake reference to remind myself to stay vigilant, happy stacking bro...

The National Cash Register Company, Dayton Ohio always included a "Coin Slab" mounted on the base of the machine, just above the Cash Drawer, coins could be dropped on the slab by the cashier who would listen for a quality ring tone.

I'm glad you are running into these too. I bought a pile of fake peace dollars in Afghanistan in 2011. I noticed that they were leaking rust when my tent leaked during a rain storm. I put a magnet to them and they all stuck to the magnet. They were silver coated and good fakes. I kept 5 of the better looking ones to remind me of this lesson.

Sheesh..now I’m gonna go thru ALL my Morgan’s now that as this vid made me somewhat paranoid. I remember back in 2013 there was a shop in Arcadia FL that had acquired 100s of these and the poor woman had been fleeced by someone who had been going door to door offering a great supposed deal on coins. After that incident she stopped offering any coins/bullion which obviously hurts the hobby. Nice video and I’ve been to that flea market u talked about with wagon wheel if FL.

The magnet like that would be most effective with a sliding test. See how slowly the coin slides down. Just hearing the coins cling on the table is proof enough.
@isettech
@isettech 4 жыл бұрын
I hated at the beginning you could hear the first two coins as they were put on the table, but the fade muted the sound of the 3rd coin being placed on the table. The giveaway was the un natural tarnish pattern on the back. It screamed fake tarnish polish pattern. I made a plexiglass magnet drop chute with a small ski ramp at the bottom. Real silver falls slowly and lands in a cup. Fakes fall fast and leaps past the cup. Adjustment of the cup location sorts pennies too. It is a vertical drop with a 1/4 circle ramp off the bottom.

Thank You so much I am now a follower as of today and soon to be a member. I have 2 Morgans I was given by accident about 53 years ago. I was buying a ding dong and some other candy and one of the Morgans was part of my change. I saw it was strange and not a silver dollar I had seen before (I was not a collector at that time) the owner asked for it back and would give me the correct coins. I said no and left, I found out later that day it was a keeper and became a coin collector that day :) I do not remember how I received the second one, however, I am sure it was a similar story. I loved those chocolate pasties.

There's another component to the magnet test in addition to seeing if it sticks to a magnet. While a silver coin will not stick to a magnet, it will react to it. If you move it along a strong magnet, it should encounter some resistance. It almost feels like it's swimming through the magnetic field. Nickel clad coins will not react similarly, nor will tin, or pewter, or tungsten, or many of the materials used in fake coins. Pure copper coins will though, so a silver plated copper coin will feel a lot like a solid silver coin.

Very interesting and informative video. Nice to have some knowledge of how to differentiate real from fake. I know a good number of us can’t afford the high tech equipment used in the video, I know I can’t, but it’s a fantastic tool to have at your disposal. I have several fakes in my collection, since I could never own real ones, but I bought them as copies. In fact the word copy is stamped on the reverse. I was under the assumption that fakes had to have the word copy on them in order to be sold in the US. I will be testing coins in my collection to be sure, to some degree, that they are what they’re suppose to be. Great job on the video. Thanks.

I thought at first glance it was 2 as many others did because it looked too good to be true. It was a nice coin. The weight is the best "tell" because it would be hard to duplicate. The close up comparison is good as well, but you would need a good one of your own to compare it too and a magnifier. However, you would also need some way to identify your good one as the dealer might accuse you of switching it with the fake.

Great video on how to recognize fake silver dollars. The "ping test" is interesting, because back in the day, specifically in Mexico the Silver coin was bounced on a wooden bar and you could distinctly hear a loud ping. One knew then it was a real silver dollar whether it was Mexican coinage or US.

Blessings to you and yours be safe and well.

Even before you started the analytic tests I guessed that it would be #3 because #1 had a fair amount of wear and a faker would not go to the trouble of producing a worn coin. Similarly, since 1921 is the commonest year for Morgan dollars it is unlikely that a faker would produce a fake for that year because even a genuine coin will be of only slight numismatic value above the silver content value. I was pleased that the tests proved my subjective evaluation.

One thing I like to do is to hold an AU Morgan in my hand at regular intervals (of course, checking its weight first against the average 26.73 grams). You can train your brain to know the correct weight without having to use a scale. This also works for Peace dollars, which have exactly the same weight and dimensions. Looking very closely at your known-genuine Morgan is also good. You'll be able to spot fakes without even knowing exactly what is wrong; you'll just know they aren't legit.

I'm already a Subscriber and get all notifications. Coins & Stamps were an early childhood memory for me and 9 to 14 I went to as many shows as I could in the Baltimore metropolitan area. It was exciting that dealers like yourself would give a kid the time of day pre-Internet when it was your business. Like major league sports you have to keep building your base! I've seen videos of the Chinese using lines of stamping machines striking blank Morgan's and I think about so many people who are buying bullion coins as an investment and have only grading books to use as a resource. We were given a Spanish Reales and they live on the beach close to Miami, but it didn't look or feel right to me. My sister put it in a box just as a keepsake. The sticky dollar gave me the impression of being fake due to the high contact points and the brilliant silver shine. I know that the uneducated are taking the natural patina from coins thinking that shiny is better, but oxidation as you pointed out should be uniform, and if it's not it's a case to give one pause.

I am a magician and have a pretty large collection of silver dollars, (Peace and Morgans). I always do the 'ping' or 'ring' test when shopping for coins. I started doing that while practicing and performing because I liked the way it sounded, but I quickly realized that it was a way to catch some fakes. When you brought out that magnet, I instinctively moved my left arm away from the screen so my Rolex wasn't affected. Then I chuckled at myself. ...Just an automatic reaction. These forms of testing are great for common date Morgans sold as bullion. Of course, testing for weight and Sigma verification are inadequate for key date coins. As Coin Guy said in your previous video, people would alter genuine coins to mimic key dates. Since key dates are worth far more than their silver content, it's economical to use genuine common dates to create counterfeit key dates.
@Spegtacular
@Spegtacular 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve said it before.. if someone takes real coins, melts them down, and has real or perfect dies and decides to create key date coinage, nobody is going to tell the difference... similar to the Omega Man coins.
@chrisp2272
@chrisp2272 4 жыл бұрын
The problem is that you have to have a skilled artisan for this. As soon as you cast metal, you get imperfections. Certainly there’s a KZfaq video out there of the process to create a coin die. In other words, quality fake coins are forgery on an industrial scale. At the end of the day, a valuable/expensive coin that hasn’t been sent off to be graded should already raise red flags (although, beware of counterfeit grading slabs).

The ping test is really just about the best non-destructive way to tell for those who don't have machine. I've seen fakes that have weighed correctly and had the right diameter (only being ever so slightly off in thickness). While they often fail the rare earth magnet slide test, they always fail the ping test. Of course, this only determines if it is silver and doesn't identify fakes made from silver... or alterations to legitimate Morgans to change them into a key date or mint mark.

I am not a coin collector, but somehow I guessed number 3. When you put them down on the table, it sounded different. It was too shinny for an old coin compared to the other 2. @SpegTacular big fan of your channel, from the south but too far to shop at Coin Guy's place. Where should a beginner look to get some of these testing supplies & tools in times such as this? I'm new and using your content as a guide thank you for what you do

Good video, even now I know over confident individuals who think they are smart for getting a good deal for old walking half’s on eBay. I told them to watch out for fakes. He didn’t think there was enough incentive for them to counter fit them. Some don’t believe it till they see it.

This was a good video for coin collectors like me. I'll never buy a silver dollar online except from a dealer I've come to trust through watching their videos, and buying other coins. BUT, WHO are the 35 down votes on this video as of April 31st? Really?

Can’t make everyone happy. There’s always someone to complain about some part of a video.. but in the other hand, there’s always someone who appreciates the videos too ;) I do it for the latter
