Radar warning receiver (RWR) tutorial:
• Falcon 4 BMS Tutorials...
DISCLAIMER:
Just so it's understood, I made this video on realistic concepts of defending threats - there are some bugs/design issues in BMS which will contradict some specific examples. For instance, currently optical and radar guided AAA are equally as deadly and have no difference - regardless, the threat defense is the same, and you should train realistically. I made this video to show basic concepts of defense, not specific cases for the particular BMS version used in this video.
I also want to stress, as I mention in the video at several points, that this video is a demonstration of defense procedures against specific threat scenarios. You should not go out of your way to kinetically defeat a SAM when you can do a sustained turn away from it or drag it. Please keep this in mind as you watch - all of these scenarios assume you have been fired on, regardless of reason, but the wisest defender avoids the threat BEFORE it fires. I havn't had to defend an active missile launch in months of play - because I know when to go defensive and when to avoid a threat. Reading the RWR properly is key.

Beaming the missile refers to putting the missile on your 3-9 line, to drag it, to make it expend the maximum energy to fly to you. the missile will try to fly to you as quick as possible, by flying a lead pursuit course. this helps.

Quite clear, yes. That was the biggest "a-ha" moment in this video. Tooling around at stupid altitudes, not beaming someone as I'm approaching, etc. I was interested in this video because of all the trouble I would get I to. At the end of the video, I had a better understanding as to *why* I was getting into trouble in the first place. Now I have a better understanding of how to get out of trouble, but *even more* about staying out of trouble.

If you're talking about active missile carrying aircraft, fire a fox 3 long, notch away so they are on the beam, then once the missile goes pitbull act as if you have been fired upon even if you don't see the M or hear a launch tone.

44:58 I read that the doctrine with BLU-107's and runways was NOT to attack directly down the axis of the runway, since that's what the enemy would be expecting. Instead the strategy was to hit it at a random angle and aim for an intersection

Nice vid, a side note, IF BY MISTAKE you get closer than 10miles against anything archer capable, cut your engines to idle no later than 7 miles. This will decrease the range they can shoot you at to about 2 miles, propably less, making head on evasion with brake+flares easier. Check in dogfight mode with acmi reviewing. Also, always make sure you are lower than him so that his seeker looks at the ground, this plays a big difference.

@Corsair8X Yeah I hope the "what not do" came across clear enough, a lot of the situations in this video I put myself in in order to demonstrate a defense, but the best defense is knowing how to avoid these threats before they fire on you and put you in a compromising situation. I hope it's clear that you should not go out of your way to kinetically defeat a SAM, and it's much better to be fired on at long range and then do sustained terms or to avoid it all together.

@SPORThbb bullseye is an arbitrary position in a theater chosen by the theater commanders, all positions are referred to in reference to the bullseye: bullseye (bearing to) for (range to) Commonly referred to in a BRAA (pronounced "brah") call. Bearing Range (both to bullseye) Altitude Attitude, i.e. bulls 048 for 63, 22,000, hot.

@johnnyblaze410 about 10-20% of your total. You should be able to run a program 5-6 times before you are out. That being said, some systems are highly susceptible to countermeasures and you won't need as much. An SA-7 can be reasonably defeated by 1-2 flares, but an SA-16/SA-14/AA-11 require 5-8 flares. Check out the PDF guide in the video description for specifics on each system. When in doubt, dump more.

The gamey way is to use padlocking (4 on your keyboard) or to use the incoming missile cam - the realistic way is to do be conservative - be defensive for as long as possible. At what range are the migs firing at you? if they are close, weaving and dragging is not the correct defense- break turn + counter measures is.

Don't try to visually spot them first, do a defensive maneuver and create as much space as possible as in the video. You can worry about spotting once the missile is behind the 3/9 line in order to drag it more effectively - but any seconds you waste flying toward the missile increase the chance of probability of kill substantially.

IR missiles (such as Sidewinders) are passive missiles; that is, there are no radar emissions required by the aircraft or generated by the missile itself in order to lock. This makes sense because IR seekers absorb heat energy (instead of emitting radio energy) to find its target. As such, there are no radio waves for the RWR to absorb and therefore no instrumental way to detect IR missiles. Awareness is the best detector. Wikipedia has a decent enough missile guidance systems article.

@Corsair8X In other words, I did not go over "tactics" that much in this video - because it's such a huge topic. It just assumes that you have been fired on for whatever reason and should respond accordingly.

Hello!! Thank you for helping us!! Let me ask you something: When I'm approaching the enemy area, should i turn my radar to silence? Does it influence anything? Can i turn my jammer on with radar on silence mode? Thank you!
@tanit
@tanit 10 жыл бұрын
Radar will allow you to be seen by other radars at longer distances. You can turn your jammer on while the radar is silent - it's an independent system. Ultimately your jammer should be off if you are attempting to infiltrate enemy air space as it will give you a bigger radar "footprint". If you get jumped by enemy turn it back on.

Can anyone explain to me what the green/yellow/red icons are that appear to the left/right of the HUD are? On those vertical light "pods". Don't know what they're called and this is one area of the F-16 cockpit I've always been curious about. I know most of the other systems and what they do or represent, but not these. What do those icons mean? Does it have something to do with angle of attack levels?
@tanit
@tanit 7 жыл бұрын
Fifty0ne angle of attack indicator
@PrimalBlueWolf
@PrimalBlueWolf 7 жыл бұрын
They are called 'indexers'. The one on the left is a rough AoA indicator. The green circle means you are at approximately 13 degrees alpha. Red is over 13 degrees, yellow is less than 12. The right indexer displays various indications, such as having an open AAR door, having an AAR disconnect, or having NWS active.
@mqr507
@mqr507 6 жыл бұрын
Fifty0ne basically when your landing, if the lower light is lit you need to increase AoA (decrease speed) and if the upper light is lit you need to decrease AoA (increase speed)
@tanit
@tanit 11 жыл бұрын
Newer RWRs such as the AN/ALQ-156 actually have a MAW (missle approach warning) system, that can track launches by their flash or actually using a doppler beam radar. DCS a-10c models this where there is an indication and track of an incoming IR missile. Unfortunately the "launch" indication is very unreliable from what I have read, and most a-10 pilots ignore it, as it can be indicated from bright reflections off windows etc.
@Csilk

Awsome guide mate, just one question, Which missile has the longer range, the adder or the Aim-120? and can the ECM jammer limit the adder tracking time while active?
@tanit
@tanit 10 жыл бұрын
The adder outranges the aim120 but the adder has a longer support range and does not have independent guidance before it goes fully active. Ecm will delay the enemy from being able to shoot you but jammer itself cannot defeat the missile.

For some reason the first thing that came to mind when I saw this video, was the rabbit from Star Fox saying "Do a barrel roll."
@tanit
@tanit 12 жыл бұрын
Uhm if he flew right into the missile, no idea how he survived. There is a chance you can avoid missiles at any range by rolling - but its a small chance. There is also Doppler beam defense, but it's extremely hard to perform and still requires some lateral turning.
@tanit
@tanit 12 жыл бұрын
No, you probably just had an aspect change and that's why it lost the lock. If you were flying level and turned on your jammer, and it broke lock, I would like to see footage/acmi of that.

Oh woops didn't see you said Archer in the original comment. Uhm, my recommendation would be to 1. Stay outside of fox 2 envelope if possible and kill with FOX 3 2. If in envelope, maintain constant visual contact on the bandit 3. Fire fox2 as quickly as possible when you have good tone and beam, re-attack if necessary 4. Generously pop defensive flares, both preemptively and a ton of flares when you lose visual on the contact

Awesome video man! Just a question: if I'm facing a mig 29 (he's coming directly at me at my 12 o'clock) and I'm going to engage a dogfight, what's the best thing to do? Activating the jammer and locking on him with heatseekers? locking him with aim 120s? Just putting him on beam, deploying countermeasures, doing a Split-s and burning away? And if I have to do all these things, which is the best order to win the dogfight? Thanks a lot! P.s sorry for my English, if there's something wrong. I hope you understand :)
@tanit
@tanit 10 жыл бұрын
IF you are certain it's a mig-29A go head on, gain speed and fire a fox-3 medium. If you think it may be a su-27 or mig-29s, both of which have dangerous long range radar missiles, do a fox 3 long then notch away from them. Put them on the gimbal limits of your radar until pitbull, then go defensive.

So "putting him on the beam" basically means positioning yourself in a certain angle towards him? (10 and 2 o'clock)? But you still have to have him at your 12 to fire your amraam right? Also, "burn", does that mean afterburners? Cause you seemed to turn a lot when you were supposed to burn, and that doesn't add up. Anyway, thanks for the video. I don't play this, but I'm very interested in how modern aircombat works :)
@wax88
@wax88 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, you fire the 120 by aiming at him, but notice that he beams right after he launches and then going into a split-S after that.Also, I think by "burn", he refers to "turn and burn" as in turning rapidly.
@Android811
@Android811 7 жыл бұрын
The beam is 3 or 9 o'clock, (right angles) it's an old nautical term. Turning in an aircraft uses up energy, (reduces speed) so you counteract it by increasing throttle.
