Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Middle-Earth - Lord of the Rings continues with the second video on the First Age. We discuss the creation of the world of Tolkien, its powers and races and we see how and why the Elves became the enemies of the Dark Lord Melkor, who they called Morgoth, after their leader Fëanor cursed him for killing his father Finwë and stealing his prized possession - Silmarils. In this episode we see how the evil first rose in the world of Arda and will talk about Ungoliant and other evils, about the Valar and Maiar, about the Elves and their sub-groups - Vanyar, Ñoldor, Teleri, and Avari ( • Beginning of the Age -... ), while this video will show the continuation of the events. In Middle-Earth, Morgoth attacks the Teleri Elves in Doriath and his allies starting the War of the Jewels with the First Battle of the Beleriand. Meanwhile, in the Valinor, the Noldor Elves of Feanor attack their Teleri relatives in the First Kinslaying. Afterwards, Feanor and his sons travel to the Middle-Earth to fight Morgoth and take the Silmarils, leading to the battles of Dagor-nuin-Giliath and Lammoth and the death of Feanor ( • Feanor Strikes Back - ... ). In the aftermath the Noldor kingdoms rise in the Middle-Earth taking on Morgoth once again, this time at the battle of Dagor Aglareb, where Feanor's sons Fingolfin and Maedhros fought against the Dark Lord, while the humans - the House of Edain ( • Dagor Aglareb - Noldor... ) rose elswhere. The fourth episode will describe the battle of Dagor Bragollach and the rise of the father of Dragons Glaurung ( • Dagor Bragollach - Ris... ). In the aftermath of the defeat the Elves and Men were on the back foot and the evil spread, but from those dark days, an Beren and Lúthien rose to challenge the darkness ( • Beren and Lúthien - Gr... ), and defeated Morgoth ( • How Morgoth Was Defeat... ). Their tragic love story inspired Maedhros to create his Union, which attacked the Dark Lord during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad - the battle of Unnumbered Tears ( • Nirnaeth Arnoediad - B... ). As a result of the battle, many Men and Elf were made hostages, among them Húrin. In the first episode about Children of Húrin, we will talk about Morgoth's curse and the Rise of Húrin's son Túrin ( • Children of Húrin: Ris... ), while the second episode covered the Fall of Nargothrond ( • Fall of Nargothrond - ... ). The third episode is going to set up the biggest tragedy in the world created by Tolkien, as Nienor has exited Dor-Lomin and her meeting with Turin is going to happen soon The third episode is going to set up the biggest tragedy in the world created by Tolkien, as Nienor has exited Dor-Lomin and her meeting with Turin is going to happen soon ( • Biggest Tragedy In the... ). In the fourth and final episode in the mini-series on the Children of Hurin, the tragedy is complete - Turin and Nienor are dead, and so is Glaurung ( • Children of Hurin - Tr... ). After their death, the Dark Lord finally released Hurin. His return would only worsen the situation for the free peoples ( • Fate of Hurin - Curse ... ) and they would continue fighting each other for the Silmarils and power, leading to the Second Kinslaying and the Fall of Doriath.

@@lisboahAll of you really are underestimating just how valuable the Silmarils were. Ffs, the Silmarillion was named after them. Morgoth slaying Finwe and stealing the jewels is the entire reason the Noldor set forth from Valinor, exiling themselves to wage war on him. The Silmarils were one of, if not the, greatest mortal creations in the entire Legendarium. In those gems was held the glow of the Two Trees has once lit the entire world. Imagine if our own sun just disappeared, and all that remained of it were three batteries filled with the last remaining sunlight. Entire nations would be destroyed in the conflicts to take ownership of it. The fact that the elves were still able to fight Morgoth in-spite of the Feanorean Oath to take the Silmarils is more a testament to their strength than a show of failure.

If you are new to this story - you now can see the source of the antipathy between the elves and dwarves in the Lord of the Rings. As portrayed in the Jackson films, Gimli v Legolas at the Council, Haldir v Gimli at Lothlorien (Celeborn is the grand-nephew of Thingol of Doriath), Thranduil (whose father was of Doriath) not assisting the Dwarves of Erebor after Smaug, and harshly imprisoning Thorin’s Company. The presence of Gandalf was the only reason Thorin’s company were allowed at Rivendell (Dior’s daughter Elwing being Elrond’s mother). It makes the ensuing friendship of Gimli and Legolas that more powerful as the symbol of a final reconciliation between the Elves and Dwarves in Middle Earth.

This is a little detail that tends to slip through the cracks I think. Only those of us who have read Tolkien beyond LOTR and The Hobbit are aware of this. I am glad this channel has taken it upon themselves to tell the story of the First Age, and in doing so remained true to the source material, unlike a certain TV show which will remain unnamed by me. Tolkien crafted such a deep and beautiful world, with such tragedy and hope at the same time. To anyone who hasnt read the books I highly encourage you to do so, the Jackson movies are great, but the books give you so much more detail that the movies do not include.

Thing is canonically some things are different. Elrond had no issues or ill feelings towards Dwarves, especially those of the House of Durin and welcomed them into Rivendel as readily as any other. He would have offered them hospitality even without Gandalf. It was thanks to the intervention of the dwarves of Khazad-Dum during the Sacking of Eregion Elrond was able to save survivors from Eregion and was able to found Rivendel and Elrond never forgot this. Thranduil, probably influenced by the animosity, imprisoned Thorin and the rest of the Company as he assumed they sought to do ill to his people (while in reality they had gotten lost, were low of provisions and actually were trying to ask the Elves for help(several times they saw Elves around a campfire feasting and singing yet every time the dwarves approached them the elves immediately assumed they wanted to do them harm, doused their campfire and fled in the ensuing darkness)) and Thorin refused to reveal why they were passing through Mirkwood. (since he rightly guessed Thranduil would have blackmailed him since Thranduil was not free of greed and had a particular weakness for white gems and silver.) Also Haldir was quite hostile towards Gimli (canonically Gimli never insulted him) demanded he would be blindfolded and closely watched before entering Lothlorien, something Legolas spoke in favor off. (For those wondering the way this was resolved Aragorn refused to enter Lothlorien if it meant exclude somebody of the fellowship and so stated that the entire fellowship would go into Lothlorien blindfolded (don't worry they were provided guides), much to Legolas his annoyance and Gimlis amusement.) Interestingly it could also be said that Gimli and Legolas their mistrust for one another had its roots in the events of the Hobbit. As revealed during the council of Elrond, the Elves of Mirkwood seem to have never apologized or sought to make recompense to the Dwarves of Thorins Company for imprisoning them, something Gloin, Gimli's father still held a bit of a grudge over.

@@visitingforgefather5997 The House Of Durin, which the Dwarves of the First age that come into the stories of Beleriand, are not of, were always considered to be faithful. Sauron had dwarves on his side at the Battle of the Last Alliance, but it is clearly stated that the Dwarves of the House of Durin all fought on the side of the Alliance. While there were certainly bad feelings between Dwarves and Elves, in reality the elves had no reason to be hateful to Durin's folk, they did obviously, but there was no need for it. Elrond being who he is, is probably the exclusion not the rule, but Tolkien clearly stated that Elrond was extremely wise and as you said had reason to trust and not despise the dwarves. All that said, like in our own world sadly some folks just hate those who are different than them.

@@lnwolf7563 I am aware good sir, during their previous video I pointed out how calling the Dwarves of Nogrod and Belegost as Durins Folk was misleading since those two cities belonged to the Firebeards and Broadbeams. (even got a hearth for that from them but they still made the mistake here.) While it is true there were dwarves on Saurons side their numbers were actually quite low. For those interested. The other Houses had largely succumbed to their greed due to their Rings and so refused to become involved in the war of the Last Alliance. Some among those Houses however chose to join the fight, some fought for the Alliance others for Sauron. However if I remember correctly their combined numbers were given as several hundreds. For context the House of Durin, which was the largest among the Houses, joined the Alliance with an army of around 50000 personally lead by Durin the Fourth. And as accurately stated by Grubnuz none among the House of Durin fought for Sauron since those dwarves still maintained friendship with the Noldor Elves.

The dwarves and the Sindar (ie: Telerian elves) did not get along. But Durin's folk and the Noldor seemed to get along just fine, as the elves of Eregion and dwarves of Khazad-dum lived and worked together extensively during the Second Age. They made the rings, after all.

"You know Sauron, I'm beginning to think I should have let someone take a Silmaril earlier and then just sat back. These chumps are doing all the work for me!" Morgroth on hearing of the fall of Doriath and the destruction of the Dwarfs of Nogrod. As always a great presentation although I will point out that the great Dwarven cities of Nogrod and Belegost in the Blue Mountains were the homes of the Houses of Broadbeams and Firebeards, not Durin's Folk. They were centred around Kazadum. Always had sympathy for Maedhros but at the end of the day he chose a bad oath over doing the right thing dooming himself and his kin. The three worst brothers all died fighting Dior but changed little for the remaining four.

It's interesting in that I think the 'curse' of Glaurung's horde of treasure/Nauglamir was a different type of thing entirely to The One Ring later in the history of Middle-earth. I think the former was just a manifistation of greed and lust itself instead of some actual power to corrupt which the Ring possessed.

I am starting to realize the Tolkien was a pretty poor author at times. To fulfill the quite stupid "curse of Melkor" and the curse of Mandos, he keeps on adding random conflict between Men, Elves and Dwarves to make it so. When Mandos laid a curse, it was fine. He is a semi-godlike being, after all. When Melkor laid a curse, in this lesser form, and more as an enemy than a god, it was already starting to become old. When a god damn PETTY DWARF laid a curse, and seemingly made it alter fate, it got stupid. But here we are again: A no-name smalltime Dwarven leader makes a further curse that alters fate. It seems that anyone can curse anyone upon death and do more damage than they could ever do in their life elsewise. And the Elven king made every mistake possible so the Silmaril ends up "lost" (which is very contrived and overused by Tolkien already at that point), and somehow this makes the Girdle of Melian not work. Why? "Sorrow". What? Oh, and she also goes west so they are leaderless. Oh, and she DOESN'T bring the Silmaril, because , remember, Tolkien needs the Silmarils to become lost, so she leaves it behind. No problem you say, the citizens of Doriath are still freaking ELVES, and the Dwarves of some random backwater station should have no chance against them. 1 dwarf should be equal to 0,40 elves in battle. But nono, the since Melian also made every mistake possible, the Dwarves somehow not only win a battle against the Elves, which should never happen EVER in Tolkien's own lore where elven numbers are more than 1 to 10, but the Elves have seemingly lost 3000 years of military experience and don't use the walls of the city to defend, but go out like idiot Frenchmen and arrogantly fight them in the field. BECAUSE WHY NOT? God, Silmarillion is frustratingly written sometimes.

Thingol was kinda asking for it IMO, but it is pretty damn sad that after all that trouble with Beren and Luthien, most of their immediate offspring would fall in this manner. I'd also like to think that, even with that oath, Maedhros had a chance to be kept on the straight path because of Fingon. It's my belief that whatever chance he had left of being truly clean and untainted died with Fingon at the Battle of Unumbered Tears. Taking part in the first kinslaying by orders of your dad is one thing Maedhros, but this second one at Doriath and what's to come? That's on you, buddy.

There is always repentance... though not quite directly stated though nevertheless a major theme in the works of Tolkien; had any of the seven shown true contrition over their crimes, turned back on their (non repenting) kin and sided with, say, Doraith in this case, it would have broken the power of their oath. It may have well led them to death and therefore to Mandos, but once there they would be free and a path open for them to return to the world of the living and to start a new. Maedhros simply made the wrong choice, out of love for a father that loved him yes, but not quite as much a the work of his hands.

Having read all of Tolkien's legendarium texts at least once, I have to commend Wizards and Warriors on trying to give a fuller picture of the last days of Húrin and the Ruin of Doriath than that on Chapter 22 of the Published Quenta Silmarillion. This was the hardest chapter for Christopher Tolkien to write, since for those specific stories, the ideas that his father had compiled over the decades were the most contradictory and incomplete. Initially he co-wrote the mentioned chapter with Guy Gavriel Kay as a compromise for the 1977 Published Silmarillion, but a deeper analysis of notes an texts would have him write at the end of Part III of History of Middle-Earth XI the following: "This story was not lightly or easily conceived, but was the outcome of long experimentation among alternative conceptions. In this work Guy Kay took a major part, and the chapter that I finally wrote owes much to my discussions with him. It is, and was, obvious that a step was being taken of a different order from any other ‘manipulation’ of my father's own writing in the course of the book: even in the case of the story of The Fall of Gondolin, to which my father had never returned, something could be contrived without introducing radical changes in the narrative. It seemed at that time that there were elements inherent in the story of the Ruin of Doriath as it stood that were radically incompatible with ‘The Silmarillion’ as projected, and that there was here an inescapable choice: either to abandon that conception, or else to alter the story. I think now that this was a mistaken view, and that the undoubted difficulties could have been, and should have been, surmounted without so far overstepping the bounds of the editorial function."

You guys should not there wasn´t really a scenario where Thingol would get away once the Dwarves claimed the Nauglamír for themselves. It´s conjecture, but I always read the scene such that Thingol realised even before the Dwarves did that they would have to kill him in order to get away with their loot. It´s also worth pointing out that Thingol at least was spared of the experience to witness the death of his now mortal and all-beloved daugther, as her and Beren outlived the fall of Doriath, the first and longest lasting kingdom of the Elves.

It was insane that Morgoth didn't need to do anything at this point, he's just sitting in his chair, eating popcorn and drinks made out of Elven bones and blood as he's amused that the free peoples are doing his work for him.

Word to the wise: Please avoid making or using magic gems, rings and swords. In that universe you will almost certainly be killed by an obnoxious pointy-eared tw*t with daddy issues 😂

Swords are cool so long as they're not evil, jewelery is best to be avoided unless it's given to you by Finrod Felagund.

It amazes me how nonsensical the Dwarves & Elves are . They rather take fight over jewels by destroying 2 of the last strongholds in Middle Earth than reorganize and continue the fight against Melkor. Melkor really didn't have to do anything. Gondolin is about to fall anyway due to stupid treachery so Melkor would get his way out of pure Envy & Greed.

i love the production of this channel..but first kings and generals..now wizards and warriors..why no female counterparts? also in your videos i see a male focus. i'm not telling this from an aggressive point of view, but maybe you can also focus great female leaders in both channels
