Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Middle-Earth - Lord of the Rings continues with the second video on the First Age. Previously we discussed the creation of the world of Tolkien, its powers and races and we see how and why the Elves became the enemies of the Dark Lord Melkor, who they called Morgoth, after their leader Fëanor cursed him for killing his father Finwë and stealing his prized possession - Silmarils. In this episode we see how the evil first rose in the world of Arda and will talk about Ungoliant and other evils, about the Valar and Maiar, about the Elves and their sub-groups - Vanyar, Ñoldor, Teleri, and Avari ( • Beginning of the Age -... ), while this video will show the continuation of the events. In Middle-Earth, Morgoth attacks the Teleri Elves in Doriath under Thingol and his allies Cirdan and Denethor starting the War of the Jewels with the First Battle of the Beleriand. Meanwhile, in the Valinor, the Noldor Elves of Feanor attack their Teleri relatives in the First Kinslaying in order to take their ships. Afterwards, Feanor and his sons travel to the Middle-Earth in order to fight Morgoth and take the Silmarils, leading to the battles of Dagor-nuin-Giliath and Lammoth and the death of Feanor ( • Feanor Strikes Back - ... ). The third episode episode showed the aftermath of the death of Feanor, as the Noldor kingdoms rise in the Middle-Earth taking on Morgoth once again, this time at the battle of Dagor Aglareb, where Feanor's sons Fingolfin and Maedhros, and others fought against the Dark Lord and we also talked about the rise of the humans - the House of Edain ( • Dagor Aglareb - Noldor... ). The fourth episode will describe the battle of Dagor Bragollach and the rise of the father of Dragons Glaurung.

@jamesholborow5604 Shadow of Mordor games aren't Canon and are a disgrace to Celebrimbor's character and legacy. Also Morgoth is infinitely more powerful than Sauron, especially Sauron without the ring. Celebrimbor's defiance against Sauron in the books is far more noble and courageous, and he remained untainted, the only one of Feanor's lineage to remain true to both the Noldor and to Illuvatar.

"Now news came to Hithlum that Dorthonion was lost and the sons of Finarfin overthrown, and that the sons of Fëanor were driven from their lands. Then Fingolfin beheld... the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat beyond redress of all their houses; and filled with wrath and despair he mounted upon Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him. He passed over Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came. That was the last time in those wars that he passed the doors of his stronghold, and it is said that he took not the challenge willingly; for... alone of the Valar he knew fear. But he could not now deny the challenge before the face of his captains; for... Fingolfin named Morgoth craven.... Therefore Morgoth... issued forth clad in black armour; and he stood before the King like a tower, iron-crowned, and his vast shield, sable unblazoned, cast a shadow over him like a stormcloud. But Fingolfin gleamed beneath it as a star; for his mail was overlaid with silver, and his blue shield was set with crystals; and he drew his sword Ringil, that glittered like ice. Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprang aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth.... Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away...; and he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds, and seven times Morgoth gave a cry of anguish, whereat the hosts of Angband fell upon their faces in dismay, and the cries echoed in the Northlands. But at the last the King grew weary, and Morgoth bore down his shield upon him. Thrice he was crushed to his knees, and thrice arose again and bore up his broken shield and stricken helm. But the earth was all... pitted about him, and he stumbled and fell backward before the feet of Morgoth; and Morgoth set his left foot upon his neck.... Yet with his last and desperate stroke Fingolfin hewed the foot with Ringil, and the blood gushed forth black and smoking and filled the pits of Grond. Thus died Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, most proud and valiant of the Elven-kings of old." Best fantasy fight ever.

I always interpreted that Fingolfin died from drowning in and being burned by Morgoth's blood, rather than his neck being broken. Seems way more badass to me that he died from the blood of his enemy due to the wounds he inflicted. Also with the way Tolkien worded it, the last thing he talks about is the pit being filled with Morgoth's blood, and then thus Fingolfin died, rather than hewing Morgoth's foot as he died from a broken neck. I would imagine it would be difficult to summon the strength to inflict such a grievous injury to the most powerful of the Valar with a broken neck. Morgoth would also have been likely to take weight off of his injured foot, decreasing the burden on Fingolfin. Fingolfin can't escape the pit because what was left of his strength was spent on the blow to Morgoth's foot. But to me there never seemed to be any indication that Morgoth broke his neck, rather than Morgoth intended to further humiliated Fingolfin by crushing his body with his foot, which he fails to accomplish, likely due to the foot injury, as you cannot break an already broken and crushed body. Being burned and drowned by Morgoth's blood causing the demise of Fingolfin also creates a parallel to the death of Gilgalad, whose body was burnt and charred by the hand of Sauron.

@@stephenkenney8290 Yes though like Feanor before him did Fingolfin really need to go off by himself with no support at all? All the children and grandchildren of the original High King of the Noldor show they have the power to kill Balrogs (who are full Maiar) and, in Fingolfin's case, wound Morgroth while also being able to (in Maedrhos case literally) single handily massacre thousands of orcs. If they had just focussed that power in one combined strike (like the White Council did against the Necromancer of Dol Guldor) they might have stood a chance or at least inflicted such a defeat that Morgroth would be so wounded as to maybe flee. It wouldn't get the Silmarils but it would have set the guy back a millennia or two rather than a couple of thousand years.

another tolkien video and my evening is immediately better thank you guys! I love these animations and narration and appreciate the amount of lore stuffed into these videos considering necessity of oversimplification required by this format

i find this concept really cool of delivering lore as a documentary im enjoying it a lot. this might be a bit weird but maybe something to consider as another thing that might be cool: maybe make documentaries about clan wars in video games? like something like eve online sometimes has wars that are absolutely massive with lots of things involved that could suit this style too and might be interesting to look into if its a feasible possibility

The fact that Fingolfin managed to pierce Morgoth’s leg while on his own back after being finally beaten with three hits from Grond’s hammer head has got to show that he is the most consummate elf warrior of all time. Also Dagor Bragollach showed the first alliance of Elves and Men to be more than a match for the Forces of Darkness. EDIT: The holding out in the various passes south of Thangorodrim and the inevitable counterattack from the elves and men that show the level of cooperation and successful military operations that the alliance between the two races can procure.

The start of the episode reminds a little of the gas attacks of the first world war, doesn't it? I am wondering now if Tolkien ever witnessed the result of such an attack or even survived one.
