Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Middle-Earth - Lord of the Rings continues with the second video on the First Age. We discuss the creation of the world of Tolkien, its powers and races and we see how and why the Elves became the enemies of the Dark Lord Melkor, who they called Morgoth, after their leader Fëanor cursed him for killing his father Finwë and stealing his prized possession - Silmarils ( • Beginning of the Age -... ), while this video will show the continuation of the events. In Middle-Earth, Morgoth attacks the Teleri Elves in Doriath and his allies starting the War of the Jewels with the First Battle of the Beleriand. Meanwhile, in the Valinor, the Noldor Elves of Feanor attack their Teleri relatives in the First Kinslaying. Afterwards, Feanor and his sons travel to the Middle-Earth to fight Morgoth and take the Silmarils, leading to the battles of Dagor-nuin-Giliath and Lammoth and the death of Feanor ( • Feanor Strikes Back - ... ). In the aftermath the Noldor kingdoms rise in the Middle-Earth taking on Morgoth once again, this time at the battle of Dagor Aglareb, where Feanor's sons Fingolfin and Maedhros fought against the Dark Lord, while the humans - the House of Edain ( • Dagor Aglareb - Noldor... ) rose elswhere. The fourth episode will describe the battle of Dagor Bragollach and the rise of the father of Dragons Glaurung ( • Dagor Bragollach - Ris... ). In the aftermath of the defeat the Elves and Men were on the back foot and the evil spread, but from those dark days, an Beren and Lúthien rose to challenge the darkness ( • Beren and Lúthien - Gr... ), and defeated Morgoth ( • How Morgoth Was Defeat... ). Their tragic love story inspired Maedhros to create his Union, which attacked the Dark Lord during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad - the battle of Unnumbered Tears ( • Nirnaeth Arnoediad - B... ). As a result of the battle, many Men and Elf were made hostages, among them Húrin. In the first episode about Children of Húrin, we will talk about Morgoth's curse and the Rise of Húrin's son Túrin ( • Children of Húrin: Ris... ), while the second episode covered the Fall of Nargothrond ( • Fall of Nargothrond - ... ). The third episode is going to set up the biggest tragedy in the world created by Tolkien, as Nienor has exited Dor-Lomin and her meeting with Turin is going to happen soon The third episode is going to set up the biggest tragedy in the world created by Tolkien, as Nienor has exited Dor-Lomin and her meeting with Turin is going to happen soon ( • Biggest Tragedy In the... ). In the fourth and final episode in the mini-series on the Children of Hurin, the tragedy is complete - Turin and Nienor are dead, and so is Glaurung ( • Children of Hurin - Tr... ). After their death, the Dark Lord finally released Hurin. His return would only worsen the situation for the free peoples ( • Fate of Hurin - Curse ... ) and they would continue fighting each other for the Silmarils and power, leading to the Second Kinslaying and the Fall of Doriath ( • Fall of Doriath and Se... ). In the aftermath, another great story, that of Tuor started, and with it a New Hope was born ( • New Hope - Rise of Tuo... ), however his coming to the last great free city - Gondolin, roused jealousy of some of the denizens and the city was betrayed to Morgoth as a result.

Gondolin surpasses Doriath and Nargathrond in almost every way…including its fall. While its destruction was certainly inevitable after what happened with Hurin, the betrayal of the realm by one horny elf just hastened it.

Said elf had been tortured by Morgoth himself so a bit of a simplification, but I'd say the laxity with how they saw Maeglins return, months later like nothing was wrong was naive to the extreme on the part of the Turgon and his council and I find the lack of concern for his disappearance in the book gives the look of Maeglin literally being abandoned and left alone gives me the vibes of Maeglin having little attachment to Gondolin itself

You know the funny thing is about this history is that with most of the wars of the First Age covering 100s or years the period between Huor's capture and his release is less than 30 years. A lot of tragedy happens in that short amount of time. I've always wondered how effective a High King Turgon could be when he hid, along with his people, in Gondolin for most of the First Age. If you don't come out of your mountain fastness you can't effectively stop Morgroth's forces marching South. His "Force in being" was not an effective threat to Morgroth, just an annoyance that he still existed somewhere.

I love the depiction of Tuor and Ecthelion here. It begs the question, out of the heroes of this age of Middle-earth, who is the strongest in terms of martial prowess? Out of the elves you also have Fingolfin who went toe to toe with the devil himself or the one-handed red-haired maelstrom of violence Maedhros. In terms of humans/half human, you have raven-haired giant dragon-slayer Turin. I personally think Fingolfin is the greatest warrior outside of Eonwe, the herald of the valar.

Its always fun to speculate on things like this, but Tolkien seemed to indicate that Hurin was the greatest warrior, at least among men, elves are a different matter. I would also vote for Fingolfin among the elves, no one else even dared to go one on one with Morgoth, even if it killed him the fact that he did it and for a time was actually doing well shows he was no one to be trifled with.
@caseyh1934

For Men, you gotta throw in Hurin. Bro took out over 70 foes b4 he got overwhelmed in Nirneath Aroediad. Elves, besides the obvious throw in Rog, leader of the people of The Hammer of Wrath in Gondolin. Supposedly the first Elf to slay a Balrog.(book of Unfinished tales vol 2. Fall of Gondolin) Personally my vote would go to Maedhros- dude had to get his sword hand cut off by his cousin, Fingon, but he came back from it EVEN deadlier

Tuor is a true hero in the tradition of indo-european myths such as the Iliad in that he is a man trapped by fate who triumphs in spite of it, being both the saviour of the Gondolindhrim but also their downfall through the hatred he inspired in Maeglin. Hollywood could take some pointers on what a hero should be depicted as.

Playing devil's advocate - I sort of can understand Maeglin's motivation. As a child all he wanted to do was meet his mother's kin and their mystical city. The very day he stepped foot inside it he lost both his mother & father, the latter sentenced to death by his new foster father Turgon. But he didn't let this impede him. He was devoted to his new home. He strengthened the city's defences, added an extra gate to the famous Seven Gates, accompanied and fought beside Turgon at the Battle of the Unnumbered Tears (even though he was offered the chance to stay behind and ruled as regent). His mistake was falling in love with someone that didn't reciprocate his feelings. The fact that the someone in question loved another that was deemed "beneath" his kin could've only worsened things. And we have to remember - Maeglin didn't voluntarily disclose Gondolin's location. He was captured and tortured by Morgoth, and only then did he disclose it. Morgoth then offered him the only thing he had ever wanted (Idril) in return for keeping his silence about what happened. And after everything that had happened - bro must've questioned how bad it could've been.

Note that Glingol and Bansil from the early version of the Fall of Gondolin were later changed to Glingal and Belthil and were no longer 'offshoots' of the Two Trees, they are constructs made by Turgon in imitation of them: "There shining fountains played, and in the courts of Turgon stood images of the Trees of old, which Turgon himself wrought with elven-craft; and the Tree which he made of gold was named Glingal, and the Tree whose flowers he made of silver was named Belthil." The Seven Gates of Gondolin from "Of Tuor and his Coming to the" were my favourite from "Unfinished Tales". I recommend reading the passage as it describes in intricate detail of the Gates and their guards. Even describing the elevation of the ravine Orfalch Echor as it rises to the Fourth Gate and levels out to the remaining Gates and City of Gondolin. Going towards the Gate of Wood, the Orfalch Echor was more like a cave as wandering through the darkness the guards kept vigil. The only natural light would shine through the portcullis of the Gate, passing through it the Orfalch Echor opens up to the sky. I hope Wizards and Warriors will cover anime/manga for more lore videos in future.

Here are the literacy descriptions of the Seven Gates of Gondolin and their guards (from "Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle Earth" "Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin"); The First Gate, the Gate of Wood 'Then Voronwë led Tuor towards the light, and as they drew near many Noldor, mail-clad and armed, stepped forward out of the darkness and surrounded them with drawn swords. And Elemmakil, captain of the Guard, who bore the bright lamp, looked long and closely at them.' - p.59 '...their captain led them from the cavern of the Outer Guard, and they passed, as it seemed, into a straight passage, and there walked long upon a level floor, until a pale light gleamed ahead. Thus they came at length to a wide arch with tall pillars upon either hand, hewn in rock, and between hung a great portcullis of crossed wooden bars, marvellously carvedband studded with nails of iron.'. -p.60-61 'You have passed the First Gate, the Gate of Wood,' said Elemmakil. 'There lies the way. We must hasten.' -p.61

The Second Gate, the Gate of Stone 'Thus they went on up the steep way, sometimes by long stairs, sometimes by winding slopes, under the daunting shadow of the cliff, until some half-league from the Wooden Gate Tuor saw that the way was barred by a great wall built across the ravine from side to side, with stout towers of stone at either hand. In the wall was a great archway above the road, but it seemed that masons had blocked it with a single mighty stone. As they drew near its dark and polished face gleamed in the light of a white lamp that hung above the midst of the arch. "Here stands the Second Gate, the Gate of Stone," said Elemmakil; and going up to it he thrust lightly upon it. It turned upon an unseen pivot, until its edge was towards them, and the way was open upon either side; and they passed through, into a court where stood many armed guards clad in grey.' -p.62

The Third Gate, the Gate of Bronze 'After a little space they came to a wall yet higher and stronger than before, and in it was set the Third Gate, the Gate of Bronze: a great twofold door hung with shields and plates of bronze, wherein were wrought many figures and strange signs. Upon the wall above its lintel were three square towers, roofed and clad with copper that by some device of smith-craft were ever bright and gleamed as fire in the rays of the red lamps ranged like torches along the wall. Again silently they passed the gate, and saw in the court beyond a yet greater company of guards in mail that glowed like dull fire; and the blades of their axes were red. Of the kindred of the Sindar of Nevrast for the most part were those that held this gate.' -p.63

The Fourth Gate, the Gate of Writhen Iron 'Now they came to the most toilsome road, for in the midst of the Orfalch the slope was at the steepest, and as they climbed Tuor saw the mightiest of the walls looming dark above him. This at last they drew near the Fourth Gate, the Gate of Writhen Iron. High and black was the wall, and it lit with no lamps. Four towers of iron stood upon it, and it, and between the two inner towers was set an image of a great eagle wrought in iron, even the likeness of Thorondor himself, as he alight upon a mountain from the high airs. But as Tuor stood before the gate it seemed to his wonder that he was looking through boughs and stems of imperishable trees into a pale glade of the Moon. For a light came through the traceries of the gate, which were wrought and hammered into the shapes of trees with writhing roots and woven branches laden with leaves and flowers. And as he passed through he saw how this could be; for the wall was of great thickness, and there was not one grill but three in line, so set that to one who approached in the middle of the way each formed part of the device; but the light beyond was the light of day.' -p.63 'Now they passed through the lines of the Iron Guards that stood behind the Gate; black were their mantles and their mail and long shields, and their faces were masked with vizors bearing each an eagle's beak.' -p.64

The Fifth Gate, the Gate of Silver 'Then Elemmakil went before them and they followed him into the pale light; and Tuor saw beside the way a sward of grass, where like stars bloomed the white flowers of uilos, the Evermind that knows no season and withers not; and thus in wonder and lightening of heart he was brought to the Gate of Silver. The wall of the Fifth Gate was built of white marble, and was low and broad, and its parapet was a trellis of silver between five globes of marble; and there stood many archers robed in white. The gate was in shape as three parts of a circle, and wrought of silver and pearl of Nevrast in likenesses of the Moon; but above the Gate upon the midmost globe stood an image of the White Tree Telperion, wrought of silver and malachite, with flowers made of great pearls of Balar. And beyond the Gate in a wide court paved with marble, green and white, stood archers in silver mail and white-crested helms, a hundred upon either hand. -p.64

The Sixth Gate, the Gate of Gold 'Then Elemmakil led Tuor and Voronwë through their silent ranks, and they entered upon a long white road, that ran straight towards the Sixth Gate; and as they went the grass-sward became wider, and among the white stars of uilos there opened many small flowers like eyes of gold. So they came to the Golden Gate, the last of the ancient gates of Turgon that were wrought before the Nirnaeth; and it was much like the Gate of Silver, save that the wall was built of yellow marble, and the globes and parapet were of red gold; and there were six globes, and in the midst upon a golden pyramid was set an image of Laurelin, the Tree of the Sun, with flowers wrought of topaz in long clusters upon chains of gold. And the Gate itself was adorned with discs of gold, many-rayed, in likenesses of the Sun, set amid devices of garnet and topaz and yellow diamonds. In the court beyond were arrayed three hundred archers with long bows, and their mail was gilded, and tall golden plumes rose from their helmets; and their great round shields were red as flame.' -p.64-65
