Falling Down is a 1993 crime-drama film directed by Joel Schumacher. The film stars Michael Douglas in the lead role of William Foster (credited as "D-Fens"), a divorcee and unemployed former defense engineer. The film centers on Foster as he goes on a violent rampage across the city of Los Angeles, trying to reach the house of his estranged ex-wife in time for his daughter's birthday party. Along the way, a series of encounters, both trivial and provocative, cause him to react with violence and make sardonic observations on life, poverty, the economy, and commercialism. Robert Duvall co-stars as Martin Prendergast, an aging LAPD Sergeant on the day of his retirement, who faces his own frustrations with socially-accepted spinelessness, even as he tracks down Foster.
The title of the film, referring to Foster's mental collapse, is taken from the nursery rhyme "London Bridge is Falling Down", which is a recurring motif throughout the film.

Wrong, this is the problem with society. The construction worker said: "He is nuts!" as soon as there were immediate consequences for his actions. His actions meaning stalling a population of civilians trying to get on with their day for NOTHING. That is one construction company, one man, and it costs the population significant TIME. Imagine millions of companies and systems doing this stuff, is it any wonder people are the way they are!? Now, imagine this corruption on all levels of society. It is built in such a way to force your compliance, or render you "nuts". It is just a reaction to the extreme society we live in. Oh, so as soon as someone reacts, we are nuts? Get the hell out of here, you bunch of scared paranoid mortals. Death is what awaits you, and you stand compliant in a world that robs you of everything that is to be cherished about life, hypocritical ignorant fools calling other "insane" when they are a waste of their own oxygen. He missed out one part of the firing drill: after extending the launcher until it clicks into place (which he did), the firer then pulls forward the square safety knob so it is locked out (which he didn't). Otherwise the launcher is still unable to be fired. The firer can then aim it and fire by pressing down on the rubber-coated trigger on top of the launcher. The instructions are printed on the side as well. 🤪

Well I wouldn't be surprised, although this was made long before COD, and all the war games, they're very realistic. So kids of today will be excellent in war. Street navigation, weapons control, tactics, heavy vehicle operation, etc. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if in 5-10 years they switch the thousands of dollars steering wheel with a PS6/PS7 or Xbox alpha (just made that up) controller. After all they use young men in war, men who two years before were kids, in school and probably still virgins.

@@ilikecinema1234 well that's the downside. I must admit wars aren't as deadly as in the past, civilians aren't allowed to be attacked. Although if a school is next door to an army base and the school suffers shrapnel damage who are we going to blame? The worst thing is war crimes are always committed by the winner. Me personally I think a war is more like a street fight then a boxing match, I would do anything to win! Shoot women and children (this means no more soldiers) blow up hospitals and kill doctors, even kill whatever prophets of the diety they believe in! A street fight is not to be taken with a bunch of rules, the only rule is to survive.

I think it's interesting that you say he only wants to hurt people that hurt him because those construction workers almost got killed. They never hurt him. It's not their responsibility and if they don't want to do the job their bosses demand, then they will be homeless and out of work. I think it was stupid for him to blame these workers rather than the real crooks which are state governments doing these projects for budget reasons. I think it was misguided anger, much like when people scream at Walmart employees for policies that are enacted by corporate. They don't get a say in what they do if they want to keep their job

So many people comment on how D-Fens is such a terrible guy and oh such a bad person but think about it? This movie and the protagonist are simply showing what a life of stress and persecution can make a person. This poor sap lost his family, his sense of worth, and now his sanity. Is anybody going to honestly say they haven't felt what Douglas portrays? How many people want to do what he portrays because of the mass stupidity and cultural wasteland that seems to be invading America? We are seeing people like him starting to crop up in every city, town, even homes. Such a visionary movie of the sad future that awaits America at the rate it is going, a true "Falling Down". Makes you wonder how many people watch this movie and see themselves in the mirror that way?

Strangely I was 15 years old when this came out, I saw it and related to his character for some reason, non vengeance but his frustration with political corruption and just frustration with life, now 43 I really understand but definitely not blowing people up or killing others which many do we see it everyday, and a lot of them are feeling like Michael's character. Recent subway shooter, why did he do that? Idk maybe horrible things were happening to him in his life and every corner he never was shown any compassion. Not at all justifying his actions but my point is, I was 15 this was a problem way before that, I'm 43 speaking on a recent incident, if nothing changes nothing changes. Show compassion whenever you can. ✌️💙

Funny, This was made back in the early 1990's. back then the road workers worked directly for the government and everyone was asking the same question DFense was asking here. "What's wrong with the street?" And then everyone was saying,"You're tearing up the street in order to justify your budget." Sooo now all this work has been privatized so the taxpayers wouldn't be burdened with the cost of paying civil service wages to these "lazy" roadworkers doing "useless" work. We have construction contractors(private construction companies) doing the roadwork with lousy designs, shoddy workmanship and 2nd rate building materials. The reason being so they can keep rebuilding the same stretch of road again and again and keep sucking off the taxpayer's tit year after year. They also "bribe" the government inspectors with lucrative jobs for "Team Players" once those inspectors reach their 20th year of government service and are eligible for retirement and a pension. And our infrastructure(Roads, bridges, sewers, water) is collapsing around us and the contractors are getting rich.. Dfense was an ignorant asshole. The old way was better. the work they were doing back then was called "PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE.

Interesting. I live in the UK, in London, and don't get disturbed too often by road works, or any work to do with construction. Since a city is like a body, if one thing vital "doesn't work" it's a ricochet effect, causing problems in many things. The roads without a doubt are one of, if not the, most important piece to a city, they're like blood vessels in the body. When one main vein is ruptured a whole limb can be decommissioned, so when one main road is out of service many vital tax paying places of commerce are affected, meaning the government won't get their money because the road isn't done, meaning the contractors won't get their money. Doing it half hearted from shabby materials, I can understand (I'm not saying its right, but I do get their point) the contractors don't want to build a road that will last 1000s of years like Roman roads, where they build it once and that's it, they want to keep the money coming in so they take their time, and just slap together some shit that they know they'll come back to in 5-10 years. It's a shame though, in London this city is good, the rest of the UK is questionable.

Each State has their own Department of Transportation, which handles everything having to do with roads, bridges and highways, especially with designing the roads and highway systems. Small States or States that don't have a lot of funds, typically use private contracting firms, since they can not manage or pay for their own construction workers. Private contracting firms actually save taxpayers money, due to them having deadlines they must meet, and requirements for them to keep their contract. Government workers do not have these same standards, deadlines, and requirements a private company must meet, so their work is sloppily done and not carried out in a timely manner. Preventive maintenance has always done, even today, but the Federal Government has not been, due to a whole host of reasons, been funding at the same levels as it once did. Mainly due to government waste and mismanagement. The money for infrastructure has mainly been redirected to pointless endeavors that don't actually help anyone, and are a waste of time. Especially the recent "infrastructure bill" supported by the Biden administration, it actually doesn't help deal with the many infrastructure issues that have cropped up since the mid 90s, and were compounded in the early 2010's.

@@My-Name-Isnt-Important it's time! It's so obvious but I didn't see it, thank you young sir. If you're working for the government, essentially the money is a bottomless pit, so you can just keep milking them indefinitely. Whereas I'm sure that unless the project gets finished, the contractor doesn't get paid.

The last time I went to Myrtle Beach. The road crew had well over 12 vehicles plus several earthmovers and it was 11:40. I made a note of that with my friend because only one person was doing anything. 15+ so-called workers were leaning on their trucks And I said to her what the heck is going on. She said they’re on their lunch break. I said lunch does not start till 12 o’clock as far as I know. You get the drift. One guy in the hole one guy on the backhoe, everyone else shuffling plans around on the hood of their trucks. Amazing.
