Pretty much my standard tag picks were Speech, Small Guns, and Lockpick. Those three tended to get you through most situations. First Aid and Science were skills I'd hit heavy on as well.

These are my standard picks too. But later in the game I change to Energy Weapons because of the Turbo Plasma Rifle.

Once upon a time... I played RPGs on the old C64 like "Bard's Tale" or "Ultima". And then "Wasteland" appeared. It was great! And Fallout was just the next step. Most important Fallout opened the door for post apocalyptic RPGs on digital platforms.

I've been playing all my life, but only on consoles. It's just now, as I'm about to turn 40, that I've started playing PC. And I've really got an itch to go back and experience some true classics I've missed out on such as this. Great review, really got me interested in start playing the game, and it also got you a new subscriber!

Although Fallout 2 directed, when we were working on Unreal Tournament, myself and a few of my fellow developers used a hexadecimal editor and made badass characters and murdered every single character in the game to see how it would respond to "Demon Spawn" which is -1000 Karma. The game would send bounty hunters after us constantly. It was a R I O T and FUN. Not much beats planting dynamite on kids :) The burst SFX at point blank range has never been duplicated.

I still prefer melee weapons for kids. Sledgehammer to the groin. Or the Slugger to the head in fallout 2.

I've always enjoyed playing early iterations of the game franchjses we laud so much today. Or sometimes just the inspirations that led to the modern versions of games we love so much. Here we see one of the industry luminaries at the beginning of his career. Brian Fargo started the ball rolling for so many developers, with this game in particular, and it's truly enjoyable to see that it ages as well as it has. Good vid

Came back here having only played through Fallout 3, and now watching the series. It is really neat to reflect on how the flexibility of the first permeated into such an iconic set of journeys through the years.

Keep up the good work man. I really enjoy your reviews and think you have what it takes to make it on youtube.😉 A few pieces of adivice though: -Invest on your audio quality. Right now I think it's not on the same level as the rest of your content. - Try to use the gameplay to explain what you are talking about on the review a little more. That makes a huge difference to the viewer. -Use the chapter function on YT. It is a massive help for those trying to find specific details about a game, or skip spoilers and such. just keep pumping good videos and the algorithim is gonna notice you eventually, this channel has a massive potential.👍👍👍

Fun fact, deathclaws weren't part of the original game design. Developers added them shortly before launch because they felt the game needed a big scary monster. Awesome, must-play game!

The original Fallout (and Fallout 2) are some of the most impactful and lasting CRPGs of my life. For reasons that are generally too numerous and complex to go into, I was never able to get into the Fallout series once it went 3D. There was something lost in translation for me when I tried getting into Fallout 3 and New Vegas. While I can appreciate that they have propelled the series into the behemoth that it is today, I just can't keep myself invested in them. Yet, despite being over 25 years old, I can still pick up Fallout or Fallout 2 today and just start playing and enjoying myself. I've never gotten further than about 6 hours into Fallout 3 but I've beaten the original Fallout five or six times and am always happy to jump in for another go.

fallout 1 is the game that created the template for what people think of a crpg. we had stuff before that like ultima 7 but those have not aged as well.
@Mibit911
@Mibit911 Ай бұрын
That is true for the most part. Ultima 7 was An amazing crpg, and ultima underworld perfected the first person dungeon crawl rpg, right after eye of the beholder. Before ultima 7 you had ther ssi and games but nothing isometric like fallout. Once fallout hit, then baldurs gate, then fallout 2, planes cape, bg2, ice wind dale. Fallout 2, Planescape torment, and Baldurs gate 2 are the best of what gaming has to offer to this day. Baldursgate 2 is the best rpg ever made, fallout 2 is one of the most open rugs ever made besides baldurs gate 1, but even bg1 tells you where to go easily, fallout 2 you get no hints or clues that you don't find yourself, and planescape torment is the best dialogue driven game ever made, with one of the best stories ever put to game. Black isle and bioware, created and perfected the crpg in a few years and then disappeared. Although since then we've gotten New vegas from obsidian, Knights of the old republic from bioware and dragon age origins.
@Mibit911
@Mibit911 Ай бұрын
I would say as far as games that allow you interactivity with everything ultima 7 still holds up today. I mean shit in 1992 you could do stuff people couldn't even do in oblivion. You could pickup flour and a bucket of water and mix it in a bucket and put it in the oven and make bread. Or go to lord birtish castle and pickup gunpowder and pour it in the cannons and then add a cannonball and fire it. The fact everything in the game was moveable, even the terrain was crazy. Move a bunch of rocks to discover a dungeon, or turn on the moveall cheat and turn the game into a sandbox

This game did not go through a 4 year EA, nor did it ask ppl to pay it full price as it was being developed. This game cost a mere fraction of what modern games do and yet gave birth to a trend that spanned more than 2 decades and inspired ppl from different cultures to explore the Post apocalyptic realm of story telling. To this day Fallout1 is one of the best games ever made. No 3D or fancy graphics either. *Just a fascinating setting and a decent plotline* . Gem of a game.

Got if for free on GOG when they did giveaway for the original, pre-Bethesda trilogy. FInished FO1 more than decade after playing sequel and like it more for more consistent content overall. People today don't like bloated (mostly open world) games while oldies also could have that issue...

Great summary, definitely a worthwhile game. Re: Time changes, one game that does this great is Avernum 3, where you are trying to defeat various waves of monsters who are overrunning the surface world. The longer you take, the more towns get destroyed, people move, and even one of your major cities can have something...interesting happen to it. It's not a hard fail, more of a "get moving or you'll have a harder time winning". If you're interested, I would love to hear your take on the series. It's similar in many ways to Fallout: AP turned based isometric rpg with strong storytelling and atmosphere, interesting character creation. It originally came out as Exile 1-3 around the same time as Fallout, then got remade twice, so the Steam version has nicer graphics and fewer bugs.

Tactics is a very different kind of game, obviously. I liked it for what it was because it still had most of that classic Fallout charm. But it's designed as an XCOM-like tactical game, so it delivers an experience that isn't at all like the first two.

I know this is unrelated, but seeing how far tech as come from the days of fallout 1 it's insane that RPG's are getting more and more boxed in, I was playing morrowind recently, and even though I honestly can't handle the old GFX the game has, the amount of player choice in that game is insane, when did skillchecks and not being able to experience the whole game with the same character become the default, now maybe me being mostly a console gamer ( I mostly only play strategy games and FPS games on PC) maybe I'm missing out on PC exclusive stuff that fills that niche. but man I remember being a teenager during the Xbox and 360 days and the amount of RPG's was insane. Even after New Vegas getting the praise it does it didn't really impact the gaming ecosystem :(

I like how Mortym talks about how you can't just walk up to the Master and click a skill check and that's it, and how other games fail in that regard... because those 'other games' are also the Bethesda Fallout games. Weirdly, while I can play older clunky games like baldurs gate and planescape quite happily, for some reason I just couldn't enjoy the old Fallouts. After being told how amazing they were and that they were made by the people who did baldurs gates I jumped in expecting to love it. However I honestly didn't like it and was very disappointed considering how so many of my friends at the time loved them. It was just so rough, I played through Fallout 2 too to see it if it was better (and it was quite a bit better) but I still felt like I had to force myself through it towards the end of the game. Everything from the combat to the menus, the map, inventory, saving, the 200% skills nonsense, just everything felt so unenjoyable to interact with. The story was pretty ok but straightforward, the characters were interesting but finnicky to manage like everything else. I just felt like it was so much lesser than what I had played elsewhere at the time.

The main thing I don't like about classic fallout is the early game. Early on you hit like a wet noodle for 50% chance compared to late game where you one shot everything with a 95% chance to hit eyes. Once you get past that it is amazing, but before that it's just a slog
