You don't need to worry about not playing the games. This is not a direct adaptation of any of them in particular. The show takes place after all the games. It's basically fallout 5.

One of the things I love most about the show is how the creators went all in on the game's more fantastical mechanics. The health packs (stimpaks), ghouls, vaults, so on and so forth. They don't try to explain any of it or change it to something more realistic. They instead go full in on the fact that this is just how things work. I love it.

The style is "Future retro"...Basically, what the 50's and 60's would have imagined the future to be. In the Fallout universe, the microprocessor and microchip were never invented, and technology stayed chunky with vacuum tubes
@silverbladeTE

That's a common mistake, sorry :) The transistor (2023AD or so in Fallout) and silicon chip (2050ish) were invented, just a lot later than our world

@@silverbladeTE And yet, in the 2070's there are still chunky pieces of tech, such as cathode tvs and large computers. They may have been invented, but they were not everywhere

@@dragonson04 _Transistor_ radios...Pip-Boys...robots ;) Yeah they still used vacuum tubes etc, which is not actually inconsistent as: We know how ruthless the corporations were (why spend money researching new tech etc?) Tubes do have some advantages including being resistant to EMP from nukes, there are more advanced forms of that tech in our world and it's not impossible for the Fallout world to have developed some tech we haven't discovered And...they look cool ! :P
@hengineer
@hengineer 2 ай бұрын
the term is "retro-futuristic". Kinda the type of future people of the 50's envisioned when they thought of atomic power and robots. the world of Fallout deviated from our "timeline" roughly after WWII (theoretically the transistor was never invented, so the Pip-Boy is that worlds answer to our smartphone) and the bombs dropped in 2077 in the game world. Some of the humor involves stuff "implied" but not explicitly stated in the games, such as "cousin stuff". Basically when you have a fixed population living in an enclosed space for a few generations, it only stands to reason at some point everyone is related to everyone else.
@hengineer

I don't know if you're a gamer yourself, but you seem a little intrigued, and you seem to understand the "games" even if you haven't played any Fallout titles. The show is so good, ALL Fallout titles have received a "bump" in players, almost to the level of when they first came out (Last Major title, Fallout 4 came out 9 years ago).
@hengineer
@hengineer 2 ай бұрын
All Fallout Titles are located at different parts of post-apoc USA. Fallout 1+2 (and the show, season 1) seem to exist in Southern California, notably "LA" area (although they don't specify SOME locations, other than showing specific landmarks). Fallout 3 is in Washington DC area, Fallout New Vegas (Las Vegas, obv), and Fallout 4 in Boston and surrounding area. Fallout 76 (the MMO) is in Appalachia.

As a fan of the games I love how the series is bringing new people to the games but still respecting the fans and what they would like to see, and even if I don’t agree with all their decisions I understand that’s because of the story they want to tell and the medium they are using to tell it, and that they are not doing it with the intention to insult the fans, it feels like people that enjoyed the games made it

Between the Cash reference, the love you also seem to hold for the music & everything in game so far & your genuine reaction - I had to subscribe.. I was a backseat player to my son, playing FO3, then again for New Vegas.. by the time FO4 came out, he was in his teens & right before he went to his Dads house, he handed the controller over to me & said, Mom I know you dont play FPS, but you have been playing this game with me, since I was lil. I expect you to be further along than I am right now, by the time I get back. I objected as I really am so bad at playing FPS, that its hilarious.. But that didn't stop me& my own FO obsession started. I also am totally OCD in games, cant walk by a container I won't loot; naturally I was much further than he was. He was so happy. He is now in his mid 20s & to this day FO is one of the many things keeping us close hahaha. I also passed on my lifelong love of Johnny Cash & Rockabilly (Psychobilly , Punk etc) onto both of my kids. Anyways glad your channel popped up under recommended channels. Ghoul's are an element of the games. They are people who have been exposed to low doses of radiation over long periods of time. Most people die from radiation poisoning, but some people have a genetic mutation that causes them to become radiation resistant, and practically immortal (though they can be killed). Eventually all ghouls "go feral" where they can no longer think rationally and start acting like traditional zombies, hungry for brains...

for context since the show doesn’t explain the historical background: The Fallout universe consists of an alternate timeline that split from our own timeline after WW2. The simple word to describe this setting is ‘retrofuturism’. A time where the transistor was never invented and vacuum tubes continued being used. Atomic power was fully-embraced as a limitless source of power and thus became used in every manner, from nuclear-powered cars to robots, to simple kitchen equipment. Historical context for better understanding of the intro: The beginning of the show is set in October 23rd 2077, the day the Great War happened which is the catalyst of the Fallout universe. But let’s go back a few years. By 2052, important resources such as petroleum and uranium became scarce and so the Resource Wars began between the European Commonwealth and the various Arab nations in the Middle East. Other nations quickly followed suit such as the US declaring war on Mexico and annexing Canada into its territory for easier access to Alaska’s oil fields, in case of a land invasion done by China (Side note: In the Fallout universe, the main world players are the US and China; the USSR became a weaker nation after WW2 in this timeline). After decades of fighting throughout the world, it was deemed that Alaska became the last place left on earth for petroleum extraction. And so in January 2066, China invaded Alaska, starting the Sino-American War, which would eventually end with the Liberation of Anchorage and thus, an American victory by the start of 2077. After a couple months of relative peace, on October 23rd of 2077, the Great War began (the beginning of the show happens here). In only 2 hours, every superpower in possession of nuclear weapons began bombing each other, leaving nothing but destruction and a devastating nuclear winter that will last for decades to come.

You were really fun to watch! Your unfamiliarity with the story was interesting because I have played a few of the games, and you were on the money with so much of it like the stimpak (the thing Lucy jabs into herself). It's also just refreshing because I haven't seen something in the fantasy/sci-fi genre in awhile for a show that just does such a good job of endearing to an audience unfamiliar with the universe. Things clearly make sense and you perceive really well! Overall, I like that you weren't noticing all the references but still pointed out a lot of fun little lore things that they don't spell out. It's a super fun world that is comical and funny on its surface but hides a very dramatic, dark, and morose setting. Can't wait to see you watch the next episode!
