Thank you for the video! I found falsetto very helpful when I sing it as softly and hollow as possible. It's a cure for my voice if I have done something wrong. I'm glad you showed how you sing in fallsetto on different notes, because it's easier to copy you rather than figure how to do it by myself. It helps not only save a time but also prevent throat ache.

Working on the falsetto is just scary but the reéult is unbelievable. Been training for a few months, could push chest up to G4 then stuck, lots of tension and intensity. Try falsetto for the first time and could only get to Bb4 or C5 at best. After just a few weeks adding falsetto as supplement and reducing chest exercises, today I can push my falsetto to F5 (yes its F5), throat is a lot free-er, start to feel my head voice (ie leave the chest behind).

I understand the TA engages at above the high B. Even with that engagement, is there benefit to working the CT muscle by going higher? i.e., doing more stretch of the cord up above E and higher? A second question about the well established opera voice...When singing a high B in full voice, and producing that BIG sound, is the TA providing only a light engagement of the cord (thinned out cord), or is it a fully muscular cord (ala belt)? Is it simply resonance that is creating the big sound from a thin cord engagement?
@JussiPaul
@JussiPaul 3 жыл бұрын
No, don't try to stretch any higher than high B. There will obviously be some stretch going on but you don't need to encourage it or work for it. As regards the BIG sound, at first the TA engagement will be thin but with time more TA engagement is possible but it will never sound like a belt because 'belt' voice is when the TAs dominate higher than they should. Yes, the thinner the vocal folds the more resonance!

@@JussiPaul The hardest vowel to sing is definitely "Ah" sound. It tends to close your chords and sound more like head voice rather than falsetto. By the way is it even possible to sing in falsetto a real song to master it? Every time I do it I get out of breathe and it sounds quite bizzare.

@@bigpiglove If you're getting out of breath then that is a good sign that the air is going through the vocal folds. With time you will be able to keep the release of air but be able to sustain the falsetto for longer and then you could try singing a song with it if you want to.

I can't go lower in falsetto than a C2 (first octave of the tenor tessitura) and have been always intrigued if other tenor voices could go lower. Frisell suggested one should bring the falsetto down at least to an A2 before the passaggio zone. I think the best vowel for that is the I vowel, because it permits greater approximation of the edges and it also teaches precisely the gentle cord closure. The I is the most difficult vowel to sing without head voice training in my experience. That's why many pedagogues came with the vowel modification intention bullshit and say the I should be as loose as an E.
@JussiPaul
@JussiPaul 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by C2 and A2? I personally refer to middle C as C4 since it is the fourth C on a standard keyboard but I know that there are other ways of categorising the notes too. Yes, without head voice development the 'ee' vowel is impossible.

JussiPaul, can you help me understand one more thing: i found the tongue exercise - the rotation of the tongue outside the mouse. Should the singers do it or it causes problems with the adam apple(it seems like it is higher than usual after this exercise) and than the low register is disappearing... And should the singers hold the tongue(or the route of it) rather high especially at the high notes? THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!
@JussiPaul
@JussiPaul 3 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do with the tongue is to point the tip towards the lower teeth and then roll it back slightly so that the tip is pressing down on the floor of the mouth. This allows the base of the tongue to come up out of the throat. The whole tongue curls up together. It is quite difficult to get right but if you do then you will experience an open throat and singing becomes easy. Try placing the tongue in this way before breathing in as it will stop the tongue drawing back and closing the throat. It is very difficult not to yawn when breathing in but this should stop that happening.

@JussiPaul

What space do you mean? Never try to make space when singing. Try to open the lips without making space inside the mouth. The 'oo' vowel will create the open throat. Any attempt to 'make space' will create constriction and deprive the CT muscle from working optimally.

Thank you so much for this video and looking forward to more content on your channel like how to do baroque songs that require coloratura without forcing?
@JussiPaul
@JussiPaul 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I'm no coloratura expert but the same principles apply. Once the vibrato appears naturally due to the coordination of the registers then the voice moves on the vibrato. The problem with modern baroque singers is that they try to sing with no vibrato which ultimately causes constriction and hence forcing of the coloratura.
@lesnuitsblanches

@@JussiPaul I wasn’t really aware that it is the way vibrato appear and coloratura made possible. I am thinking of Joan Sutherland, her ease into coloratura would come from her balance of registers. My natural range was from about a low G up to around D above middle C (one and a half octaves). My early teachers pushed me up a few notes to around G/Ab but I then lost the low notes! It was only when I started experimenting with falsetto that my full range started to develop and I now have about 4 octaves.

@@JussiPaul Having a middle C as the highest free note for a tenor were quite dissapointing I guess. Did you consider yourself as a baritone because of your limitied range at the time? And I'm wondering what fallsetto can do with bass. Would it turn a bass into a profundo-bass?
@JussiPaul
@JussiPaul 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigpiglove Falsetto is very important for a bass. I have a bass student in London (the one on the bass lesson videos) and his range has really expanded with the falsetto exercises. I'm hoping to make a new video in October if I am able to get to London. With the bass voice it is more about freeing the passaggio tones but this particular bass can now sing a high A in full voice. I think ultimately it is all about how much time one has. I'm sure a bass could sing a high C given enough time but since he would never need a high C then that is wasted time but for a tenor it is definitely worth waiting for a great high C rather than trying to rush it and lose the voice in the process. The low notes become easier for a bass but I've not noticed any real development of lower tones so no I don't think falsetto can turn a bass into a basso profundo!

@JussiPaul
@JussiPaul 3 жыл бұрын
It's not so much about having a strong chest voice (though that is a side effect too) but getting true flexibility and a warmer and darker tone. As the high notes develop the tone will become brighter but one should always have access to that truly dark tone which is required for Chiaroscuro singing. We need to free ourselves from the illusion that chest voice is loud. Have you ever heard a bass sing louder than a soprano?
