What is the expected lowest note of high bases (I think David Jones calls them Basso Cantabile and others say Basso Cantantes)? My voice has seemingly started to change recently (I'm 25 and graduated college), and I'm wondering if I'm now a High Bass, or just a Baritone with a new low extension. More context below: I was trained as a baritone throughout college (but I struggled to access the high notes, and graduated with a high G (G4) being a bit unstable. My voice teacher just said, "It should feel like you're speaking on pitch, while keeping the breath "pulled down", but when it came to high notes, things were a bit out of control, but there were moments where I was able to sing them decently, but it wasn't reliable, though near the end of my Senior Recital, I seem to have been gaining more momentum up there. I would say my range was F#2-F#4 which seemed a bit low for a Baritone, and kind of unusual. My voice teacher did think that my timbre was unusually warm and dark for a Baritone, but he didn't think I was actually a bass since I didn't have an extensive bottom register and faded out down there. Recently, I had to fight a cold, which one symptom was that my voice was affected. I just rested my voice, and used some laryngeal release exercises recommended to me by a voice therapist. When I recovered enough to where I could sing again, Suddenly, there were a few changes that happened. Things seemed to be more open in my lower register and I discovered that I could now sing lower notes. Low D/D-flat is pretty regular, while Low C seems to be hit or miss, but if I'm making sure I breathe right and just "think" of going down to that pitch instead of trying to make it happen, it's almost always a hit. I (in the middle of typing this comment) decided to try warming up and doing some exercises, and turns out, I still have a High-F#, and it didn't really feel unstable, but it seems like it's in the very top of my range. I started to prefer the bass-tessitura arias, as Baritone Arias (with the exception of Non Piu Andrai from Marriage of Figaro) tend to be chronically up there which wears me out quicker. I also feel kind of a "closed upper" mechanism, that I think was that "Baritone Register" I would sing in during college, but it now feels a bit weird and strained if I sing up there, so I chose the route of just speaking, relaxing, and allowing that new "bass register" to develop. Regarding my low-range, I remember reading an article from David Jones that states Male Voices have 2 chest registers, the lower one is where the note comes out but with less tone fullness, and is below the first chest register. I kind of enter the 2nd register around a Low D but I shouldn't be the one to determine that because I can't truly hear myself. At around Low D, I still feel a rumble in my belly, but it is hard to hear myself. I still hear the echo in the bathroom, though. Not sure if I'll be able to tackle Osmin yet, but that can come with time. Do basses have to reach a Low C, or would a Low D/E be fine? I know it's mainly by timbre, but pretty much all basses I've rubbed shoulders with can reach a low C and sometimes even lower, whereas now, I'm at a Low C (if everything is done correctly) but I'd say D is what I'd prefer to sing regularly and it feels like I'm a "fake bass". I have hit a Low B before, but it's only in the mornings. Oh, I forgot to mention, I have to be "speaking" in order for all this to take effect. If I'm "pushing" then I will feel tension in the root of my tongue, and that will hurt, and I may loose the low notes. It just feels better to breath and then speak resonantly than to push and try to make the sound big (people tell me I have a naturally larger voice anyway, but I doubt it). I have worked on my falseto in the pianissimo "ooh" like you mentioned in the past video, however, what now makes it weirder is if I sing pianissimo, it naturally will blend into my low register and take me to a low C or D without any breaks. Could I be doing it wrong? I find if I close my mouth to where there's barely an opening (but still "ooh") that I can find where there's a slight break, though. I didn't think I was a profundo, since I'm not sure if I'm capable of bellowing the low notes as loud and heavy as a profundo. There's also a chance that my new low notes might be the result of a health concern. I know I gave you a long comment and that the best advice is what's given in an in-person/skype voice lesson, but if you could provide some general insight as to what might be going on with my voice, then I'd really appreciate it.
@JussiPaul

Thanks for your very detailed comment. I honestly couldn`t help you without hearing you. Range doesn`t really indicate voice type but one hopes one can create the range that is needed for one`s vocal fach. If you have the timbre of a bass then sing bass but if you don`t then be careful. Most baritones today don`t have a clue how to sing high notes so it is most likely that you are a baritone who needs help releasing the upper notes. Anything above an F is difficult for low voice types generally so don`t reject your baritone status until you have had a good go at finding your true high notes.

@@emar779 If you want to know the long term effect of singing in the mask then have a listen to early Marilyn Horne recordings and then compare them to her later recordings. She was a big mask advocate and in my opinion she destroyed her voice. Having said that, I heard Alfredo Kraus live when he was about 70 and he sounded fabulous. Maybe it works for some and not for others? I teach a slight lowering of the soft palate when one approaches the passaggio but mask singers stay in that position for the whole voice so just from a mechanical standpoint it can`t really be healthy because all the parts involved in voice production need to stay flexible. My advice would be to never try to sing in the mask but like my student says when voice production is correct it will sometimes feel like the sound is in the mask. I hope that`s clear?

@@JussiPaul You advise people to start modifying their vowels at C4 or C#4, but I have never heard of any operatic tenor modify their vowels that early in my entire life. Not even one of them. Listen to Mario Del Monaco, Lauritz Melchior, Pavarotti, Gigli, Di Stefano, Corelli, Tamagno, and others for reference. Even pretty much all operatic baritones I've ever heard of start to modify vowels later than that. Passaggio is partly defined where you switch from chest to head voice, but it's also where you start to modify your vowels (at least the second passaggio is). And I've interviewed a basso profondo myself whose high notes start at F#3 (though I had to remove it unfortunately but I still have interviews with other basso profondos and when you hear them sing, they sound like they're literally belting at A3). Listen to Luisa Tetrazzini, an Italian coloratura soprano from the Golden Age of Operatic Recordings, sing an E4. It sounds like a low note for her and far below her passaggio.

Interesting. Almost every other recommendation I've heard is to put tip of tongue against front teeth. Are you suggesting the retracted tongue as a singing posture, or as an exercise?
@JussiPaul
@JussiPaul 2 ай бұрын
All the great singers of the past sang with this tongue position. I wouldn`t call it retracted, I would call it elevated. This tongue position is also good for your health. The resting position for the tongue should be against the roof of the mouth but many people these days have lost this natural position. Singing correctly is a great way to reactivate the tongue. We basically need to get the tongue out of the throat. If you want an old school source for this information then you can read Douglas Stanley`s book Your Voice.
