Simple solution.NEVER fly WestJet or Air Canada. Take an American carrier.

Was supposed to fly ATL to YYC in 2 weeks. I changed my flight to a proper airline.

They certainly are not stranded. Lots of flights leaving Puerto Vallarta that will get you to Vancouver. Come on, folks, use your brain.
