It was the bit where they used the entire song that was overkill. There's a big difference between milking a joke (Which Family Guy knows how to do effectively) and lazy filler. It was a similar thing where they played the entire video of Jagger and Bowie's version of Dancing in the Street.

I had no idea they did this more than once. When I saw it I found it funny but I tend to like the kind of joke that the whole idea is how painfully long it is. I think there's absolutely a place for drawn out, dryer humor. Just because other smaller shows don't have the creative freedom to do it, doesn't mean it's disrespectful to them. I've seen smaller shows waste entire episodes too for a joke. Not to mention family guy has been going on for so long, so it's inevitable they do a handful of these. That karaoke joke is actually hilarious btw
@harryfromends
@harryfromends 6 ай бұрын
Gotta disagree with you on the karaoke joke, it’s lazy and the punchline is terrible - it’s just Peter singing, which as I mentioned at the end of the video, would’ve been far funnier in my view if after all that time they had Peter take an in breath and then it cuts back to the house. And sure, there’ll be the occasional show that chews the clock, usually the Netflix ones, but for the most part innovative shows like Moral Orel, Superjail, Venture Bros, Aqua Teen Hunger Force etc, don’t make it their business to put 3 minute segments in to intentionally annoy the networks, and in turn their audiences.
@leeward6762

The Conway twitty joke was funny for a first time experience, you never really see a TV show play a three minute music video, except for like Beavis and Butthead, where they talk over it, I think that’s why the Conway Twitty joke was very popular at first, because it was something nobody really saw before. And so, it was a very original concept for family guy, but that’s why nobody else used a joke like the Conway Twitty joke because it only worked for one time, so when family guy kept on reusing the joke, the joke lost its meaning. hell, I was laughing my ass off with how long the music video was going. But watching it again and again is tiring so i usually take a long break from those particular episodes so I could find that joke funny again. But like you said, there’s a great appreciation of the Conway Twitty joke and you expressed it by singing it yourself. probably one of the best and most creative ways to talk about your subject in your video, so I applaud you because you did exactly what Family Guy did, no KZfaqr in this community never really sung to not only relate to the subject but be funny aswell, plus you voice is great man, would love to see more covers from ya!

I find it a little sad that this joke started around the time family guy was still considered a good show. But honestly? I always thought the most controversial joke would be when Peter asked Lois how he would slit his wrist if he were to commit suicide. A lot of people really didn’t like that one, including myself.
@harryfromends
@harryfromends 7 ай бұрын
That’s the thing, the show was still producing quality episodes when the Conway twitty joke started, which is a real shame because those 3 minutes really could’ve been put to better use. And I agree, that razor joke was in very poor taste, although I’d say it’s more offensive than controversial, as everyone can agree that it wasn’t all that great.

As on the fence as I was and still am about The Conway Twitty gag, I loved how the manatees put it to rest by not only finally playing a full Twitty performance, but then quickly slipping one more barb in a season later by having God off-handedly telling Peter "Oh, and Conway Twitty says, 'Cut It Out! Write a Joke!'" And you just know they didn't learn their lesson because they've gone back to the well time and again with different super-long video clips. (Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show, anyone? 😅😅😅) It's as if Seth and the Crew are taunting the network because they have realized FOX has no other non-sports content that's worth a damn right now, except their show and The Simpsons, and they gives no effs. I always fast forward whenever they do these jokes. When it’s only a few seconds of the song, I’m fine and it’s kinda funny as a non sequitur, but when it’s a whole 3 minute song I just can’t stand it. And the worst part is it’s not just Conway Twitty. There are so many times when Seth makes jokes that take over a minute to tell. Some of these make me laugh like the one where Carter was trying to destroy the bench with a bulldozer or Peter trying to pick up the bullfrog, but then you’ve got the two you mentioned (karaoke joke and Dancing In The Street video), there’s Peter making “dad noises,” the chicken fights (funny the first time but just got annoying), Peter slowly killing the beached whale and the worst offender of all was playing the entire intro to the Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle show which lasts longer than any of the Conway Twitty segments.

I dont mind the Conway Twitty gag, heck my favorite one is him singing "I See Want To In Your Eye." But I do feel its highlights Family Guy's problem with dragging out gags way too long just for the sake of it (Ex. The Karaoke Cutaway) and aggravating the viewers. And especially if they're off-putting ans boring.

First of all let me say that music video at the end, just brilliant. I’m not really a huge family guy fan, outside of the original episodes I’ve never really been to found of it. But I have always loved the Conway Twitty segments. They always remind me of music numbers or segments from old Verity shows. I was young watching family guy to young to be watch it really. But it’s early humor and especially the Conway Twitty segment reminded me of watching reruns of old Verity shows. I used to love watching reruns of verity shows growing up, like Yee Haw, Sonny and Cher and many others as well as many old British comedies that utilized this type of humor as well, even the Matt Helm spy films would stop the plot so that Dean Martin could do an entirely unedited musical number. I don’t know to much about the anti comedy aspect of it but I do know I always saw it as a genuine call back to that old era of film and television I used to love being introduced to. My Father, introduced me and my brothers and my friends to a lot of those forgotten segments. And have created long lasting fandoms in us to this day, my brothers love for music, my friend Mick’s obsession and inspiration with drummer Buddy Rich, My friends especially my friend Dex and I’s love for old music and films. And my love and appreciation for those forgotten segments. I wouldn’t say it’s a nostalgic memory just a love and appreciation for what can be for. And a bond I get to share with family and a group of life long friends. It also helps that he is a genuinely good singer and I was already a fan of his music the first time I watch that episode of family guy, but hay that’s just me. And now, Ladies and Gentlemen Mister Conway Twitty “I can almost hear the stillness As it yields to the sound of your heart beating I can almost hear the echo Of the thoughts that I know you must be thinking And I can feel your body tremble As you wonder what this moment holds in store And as I put my arms around you I can tell you've never been this far before I don't know what I'm saying As my trembling fingers touch forbidden places I only know that I've waited For so long for the chance that we are taking Well I don't know and I don't care What made you tell him you don't love him anymore And as I taste your tender kisses I can tell you've never been this far before And as I take the love you're giveing I can feel the tension building in your mind And you're wondering if tomorrow I'll still love you like I'm loving you tonight You have no way of knowing Tonight will only make me love you more And I hope that you'll believe me 'Cause I know you've never been this far before”

Honestly I thought the joke was annoying until I saw this video and re-thought the context of it. I went and watched some instances of it from the viewpoint of it being the writers trolling the network execs and the fans and yeah I was in tears laughing my ass off. I usually don't like "time waster jokes" but now I'm thinking this one might be clever and obviously I found it genuinely funny.

There we go ahah! I had pretty much the exact same experience - when I first saw the joke I hated it, and then it grew on me as I delved deeper into the discography of Conway Twitty & ofc started learning how to perform in a country manner to emulate his style!
@BobtheExile
@BobtheExile 6 ай бұрын
The funny part about it, for me at least, is I never even saw the episode until years later, so I didn't even know about the joke until everybody was already over it. By the time I learned Family Guy even existed, it had already been revived for the second time, and I started getting into it around 2010-2011, and I first saw the Conway Twitty joke about 2014 or so. I remember asking my grandfather who Conway Twitty was, and he told me that he was "A very good country artist from the old days" (his words exactly) so yeah it took me a while to put the pieces together, and it was only today that I really got the joke

Apparently, Seth does these to get back at Fox for making him cut out some of the more crude/inappropriate jokes, the Conway Twitty gags force the network to fork over thousands of dollars for royalty fees every time the episode with the gags air.
@harryfromends

This is the side of the joke I don’t mind, because I get that it’s a clever middle finger - but the caveat to that is that it also takes 3 minutes of the audiences time
