My favorite episode of the series. Love when the cleaning woman warns Kate against trading a silk purse for a sow's ear. Was the first time I'd heard that expression. Most of us have been on the giving and receiving ends of this at some point. Not fun. We find out throughout the episode that the whole family cares about Mrs Hogan and not just Kate. Willie buys her a gift and Nancy and Doug offer legal assistance. Pasadena Matron Arrested for Shoplifting! Pretty ridiculous that this makes the paper.

All kids should graduate HS with the ability to cook a few basic meals from scratch; fix a button or repair a hem; put air in a tire or change a flat; know where to turn off main water and electric supplies; how to unclog a drain and toilet. They should also be taught WHY these simple things are important and that they are building blocks for everyday life. In my next rant we will cover the basics of credit card use and debt as well as planning for retirement 🥱

@@59skupe yes. just the fact that instead of essential life skills such as knowing your basic legal rights, knowing basic personal economics, and how to cook nutritious balanced meals for oneself, they instead teach us useless things such as physics and geometry/algebra/calculus. Don't get me wrong, I think knowledge for its own sake is great, but college exists to deepen your knowledge of subjects that you are curious about, and the sad fact is that most kids who graduate from public or private school can't run their own lives once they get out into the world.

It may have taken a few seasons but it was nice to finally see the self righteous high & mighty Kate doing something mean & human just like the rest of us mere mortals. And I agree with many of the comments wishing Patricia Morrill had continued in the role of Elaine Hogan, esp after that episode where Kate tried to reunite her with the daughter she gave up for adoption (season 2, episode 14). But perhaps Morrill was not available. I also loved her as Lou Grant's wife Edie on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", Stephanie's mother on "Newhart" and Mrs. Rizendough on "Coach".

Thats the way a lot of shows used to be and some people in general. It’s Ike once a woman had kids she had to cut her hair short and then came the cotton ball hairstyle that lasted the rest of their life. Even on All in the Family Edith was approaching her 50th and she was actually 49 or so and so was Carroll o’ Connor yet they both looked to be in their 70s or 80s. Since Elaine Hogan was so afraid about what Fred's reaction to her other daughter was going to be , it's no longer an issue for her to care what Fred thinks so why did the writers not show Elaine meeting her daughter for the first time since she had given her up for adoption. In my opinion if I were one of the writers I would have insisted on bringing back the story line for that episode. Would have been nice to finally see the two meet one another and they both seemed so lonesome so why not pair them together at the end of this ep.

Buddy listening in her room to the Muzak version of Barry Manilow’s “I write the songs” shows how out of touch the writers were with that generation. That’s something you hear in the frozen food aisle of the supermarket, not in a 17 yr old’s bedroom in 1979/80.

I agree, but since I'm now as old in real life as Kristy McNichol is now, you can't forget what a big star she was back then. Not quite David Cassidy level, but not real far from it either.

Correct, but we listened to the original versions of his songs, not the muzak ones. No teenager ever listened to that type of music.

Nice tp see a Kate episode. There aren't many left in the series now, maybe just 2 or 3 more. I'm sad that it's almost over with as I love the show but it the writing has really deteriorated in this last season or season and a half. I will go back and watch the first seasons again, it really started out as a brilliant show. The writers really damaged it with the addition of the Annie character and all the comic relief bits.
