Buddy is fawning over her teacher Miss Jessup (Blair Brown). When Kate goes to a PTA meeting one of the parents reveals that Miss Jessup is a lesbian and that she reportedly had an affair with a student. So the parent wants to mount a campaign to have her removed. When she asks who among the parents agree and disagree with her. Kate chooses not to take sides at the moment till she can look into it more closely. (Please do not bother complaining about the sound quality of this video. For many years, this old video copy was the only version available online. Now it is available to stream through Tubi.)

The most ironic part of this episode is that years later both Kristy McNichol and Meredith Baxter would come out as lesbians. Baxter said she didn't know until later in life. I don't believe McNichol ever said how long she knew, but I believe she'd been in a committed relationship for a long time. Sad that some people still choose to equate homosexuality with pedophilia. Two different things.

I also thought it was strange that the teacher accepted a dinner invitation from a student’s parents (dual relationship), and at the end of the episode, Buddy and the teacher were in a classroom alone together. Certainly doesn’t help the teacher’s case. That said, the writing was excellent and it made me wonder if Kristy was out to the people she worked with then?

The same thing is happening again. This episode was inspired by Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign to repeal civil rights protections for gays and lesbians in Miami/Dade County, Florida, and to make being gay or lesbian a basis for terminating any public school teacher. Now the same forces are back 45 years later and have established a law making it illegal to mention or raise the issue of anything to do with homosexuality, bisexuality or being transgender when it is not “age appropriate.” Since the law was intentionally written to both sound anodyne and be very general and unclear teachers AT EVERY level of education are essential gagged from either mentioning they are gay or being identified as gay for fear of losing their jobs. Meanwhile, in Texas, parents are being investigated and threatened with investigation by the state for child abuse by seeking hormone treatments for their transgender children.

I think I must have missed something about Carson McCullers and the book and film "The Member of the Wedding." I've always loved both. I thought the story was about Frankie, the young girl's loneliness and feeling of isolation. Not really. Kristy didn't figure out that she was gay til late 78 or early 79. I'm not sure when this was filmed but it's possible Kristy believed herself to be straight at this time.

a brave subject especially for the 70's and nearly prophetic for Mcnichol and birney. But disturbing I didn't see Blair Browns name at the beginning or end.

@@theeyeinthesky3854 Maybe if if viewers knew Blaire B. played a homosexual on tv, that would ruin her career. So she probably chose not to be credited. Homophobics would probably hate the actress Blair Brown if they knew she played the role of a homosexual teacher...

I can’t stand Buddy and how selfish and immature she is! She acts like she’s 11! Coming downstairs and giving her Mom her breakfast order!! What nerve!

I was a teenager back then, if I'd have given my mother a breakfast order? She would have laughed and told me to make it myself. And then asked me to make supper for everyone because she had to work late.

I enjoyed this episode but laughed so hard that the parents allowed Ms. Jessup to go up to Buddy's room. I mean that is hysterical.

Two years ago those decisions were safe. Now with Trump’s conservative majority of 6 and the decision that destroyed Roe v. Wade and declared that there is no federal constitutional right to privacy, it seems entirely likely that it is just a matter of time until the Supreme Court will strike down any federal rights for LGBT people and say it is “up to the states” to decide, which means that just like abortion, you could actually see homosexuality criminalized again by a majority of states.

With Kristy McNichol coming out as gay as an adult, I couldn't help but wonder if this episode was hard or scary for her to act in having assuredly known since birth she was gay, or at least "different" than other girls, and having to hide it. I wonder what was going through her mind...Watching this show when I was 10 and loving it, it's hilarious to see it now and the messed up things...like how spoiled, selfish and self centered Nancy is. My god, every episode she's doing something to somebody. This one, she invited her brother to dinner then tells him he's cooking for everyone. The writers of her character must have wanted her to be a nitwit. Haha.

I think it was insensitive of them to make Kristy McNichol film this episode. I know it must have been uncomfortable for a young girl her age. At least she's more happy and comfortable with her sexuality as an adult!
