Used 53 ft/lb because I missed the conversion. Bolt sheared. Was told that new replacement bolts were rated for 15ft/lbs. So if it is 53in/lb or 4.41ft/lbs then hand tight should be plenty

I learned one trick from this video--flipping the valve cover and pounding out the spark plug tube seal from the top. I pried them out from the bottom with a seal puller, but it wasn't easy! However, the author only did the first one from the top, I believe. Too, I wouldn't do this job without an inch-pound torque wrench. There is a shop manual-recommended pattern for tightening the cover bolts, which should be followed, as well.

Video was great and will definitely help when I need to do this. If I may say though, as you found out, never use a power tool to put a bolt back in, and use a torque wrench and specs to tighten bolts down, then check them weekly for a month to make sure they stay properly torqued. have a great day!

@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I found the hardest thing about the driver's side is loosening the dipstick bolt (just because it's hard to get the socket angle right---the main reason I didn't completely remove it). Other than that, and the one fuel-injector electrical connection you have to remove, it's just a repeat of what you already did. You'll breeze through it, Chris. All the best to you!

Had oil burning smell each time I parked, checked to find oil along both valve covers with it dripping down along heat shields but not a drop on my driveway, so it was a slow leak. Purchased valve cover gaskets and got ready to replace them. When I went to remove the bolts, I found the first one to be very very loose, like almost completely backed out. I checked the others and found a majority of them to be crazy loose. I ended up tightening them all down just to see if that helped and sure enough no more leak. I kept the gaskets in case of further repairs, but that was around 2015 and still no leaks, just a bolt check with every oil change or anytime I pop the hood. 2000 Tundra Limited V8

This was a great vid. Loved the editing skills tbh. Kept me engaged, and focused along through some of the suspense. As for the gaskets, what is the best practice when applying the FIPG? Should you let it sit for 5 minutes then place the cover back on, let it sit longer, place cover on the engine then wait 20 minute, then tighten down? What’s the proper procedure. Your help is super appreciated as I am tackling this now!

A lot of videos, including this one, speed the video too fast to catch important moments, even when slowed down to the lowest setting. Case in point, specifically, what kind of rig did you use to remove the hard-to- access oil dipstick retainer (bracket) bolt? It looked like a swivel was involved somehow with a deep socket but didn't look like a universal joint. A lot of us are on a budget and need to plan out our parts, tools, and supply purchases carefully in advance before starting projects, especially those with just one vehicle that just can't easily run to the store for purchases mid-stride. Otherwise, I thought your video was superb. Thank you!

I want to say they were around $200 US, Hunter. But to be honest, the Haynes or Chilton's manuals are much easier to use. Unless I was fully restoring a vehicle, or ran across something I just couldn't find in the other manuals, I don't think I'd buy the official shop manual again.

Usually you just let the metal tabs on back of valve cover to get the rings out...why are people beating on them?

The seals seem pretty stuck even with the tabs out of the way. I think they get baked in over time, or they use an adhesive sealant on them at the factory.

Get a seal removal tool. Only about $10 and way safer than a screwdriver

Excellent and detailed video, I just subscribed. I do have one question though because it went by pretty fast and your hand was blocked by a hose. What was the area or part you put the sealant on after the 2 half moon pieces? It was around the 12:53-13:05 mark?

Thanks! ... those were the corners near the front of the engine. Gaskets have a hard time sealing sharp corners, so a little dab of sealant in those two spots on each side.

I can't watch this. That monotone music is far too annoying. Also, if you put out a video on "How To", do it with narrative. It will be far better and get you more views.

All the comments here say otherwise. Who wants to hear a dude rambling for 26 minutes over a seemingly easy job? This is the perfect video.
