Composer of the last piece here!!! I can't believe I made it into the video lmao, it's an honour to see a piece I wrote being played by TwoSet. Beautiful playing and I hope y'all liked it. All the other pieces were amazing to listen to, interesting textures and captivating themes all around!! I would've really liked to hear Hypersonic Superconductor performed again with more rehearsal time, it was already sounding fantastic. Looking forward to the next fan composition event :)

Your piece was wonderfully descriptive, I could envision the story as it played. The main theme is very quirky as well, and I laughed out loud when the violins "scrambled over one another" in the final section. Pure imagination! p.s. Funny how we share the same view on Hypersonic Superconductor

The first one is already incredible! It reminds me so much of howl's moving castle The second one sounds sooooo interesting in a positive way. I can imagine a girl dancing/running through a castle at night The third one plays really well with imagination! The scene The composer described and the piece went perfectly hand in hand, from the juggler to the romantic sound of dancing with the girls to the fast running like progression, LOVED IT! The fourth is a bit confusing to listen to imo because there's so much going on but I bet it's fun to play and I liked the melody you could hear from time to time The fifth, awsome start 👌 Love the melody! The argument is rly well portrayed imo I love it! As well as the guy leaving at the end. Piece nr 6 👀 OOOOOO the harmony 🥰 gosh I love how it progresses! The first piece, "Cerulean," definitely takes inspiration from musical scoring unique to Ghibli, and might I add, reminded me of the BGM for the anime Victorian Romance Emma, especially ball scenes in Season 2. Some musician-composers are just so phenomenally gifted with weaving sounds into colors and transporting you to particular times and seasons. I'd love to have Kevin's work adapted in a Ghibli film, the piece is playful and innocent, but deep and tender, and almost sad towards the end. Marvelous art. The piece that followed, Scherzo in G, gave me serious, serious Sorcerer's Apprentice vibes. :) The third piece, At the Carnival, put a big smile on my face--seems like the quartet enjoyed it too. It's amazing how music can seem to tell a completely story (or at least, play a scene) so magically. "Hypersonic"--cool, because you can literally appreciate science in the sounds that you hear individually, and then combination just seals the deal. I don't know much about music, but the main word that got to me was 'modern.' "Canon-Squeeze Your Legs" is beautiful, could definitely feel the Chinese influence, and the passion across notes really comes translates. Found the end to be particularly endearing, a touch of bittersweet, before things are resolved in a tender, comforting way. By far the best for me was "Elegy." Truly loved how the composer captured 'lushness' through the different textures involved that swelled and came together so harmoniously (and heartbreakingly so). There is something so captivating and hauntingly tragic about this piece--and that end. I can't explain how unsettling it is while also being hopeful. Music is a mystery. Bravo to all four of your for doing such a splendid job!

Because I tend to focus on the mechanical side of music which is theory, I often don't see the emotional beauty or turmoil a piece is trying to represent. It is rare that a piece overwhelms me with emotion so much that I begin to weep. However, that is exactly what happened when I heard Elegy for String Quartet. Chun Hei Lau has at the same time moved me to tears and opened my eyes, and for that I must give my deepest appreciation.

I hardly comment and I know nothing about playing an instrument or composing a piece but I'd like to share what these pieces evoked in my mind! •'Cerulean' is a beautiful piece and I can absolutely hear the Ghibli/Hisashi influence. I could also imagine it in an RPG/JRPG style game it was really amazing! •'Scherzo' for some reason makes me think of old cartoons before voices were really added to characters. It makes me picture a dusty color pallet in autumn maybe the late morning of Halloween or the day prior. Some mischief is about to happen or someone is plotting~ •'At The Carnival' definitely helps with the description that the composer provided. Two kids running around enjoying themselves at something like a carnival or street market and then a feeling of being rushed or late home. Great imagery! •'Hypersonic Superconductor' makes me think of an 'old future' style movie intro just paper shuffling and big retro machines printing things and 50's style clothing and hair. •'Cannon on the Theme' sounds like intro music I would hear on an HBO original and I don't think that's a bad thing! I can see one of those artsy intros like from Westworld playing in the background. •'Elegy for String Quartet' makes em think of a hard journey through the night to be met with a pink and blue and grey sunrise. There's a moment of respite for the weary traveler or maybe their journey is over. Again I'm definitely no one who matters in regards to the actual composition or playing of these pieces, but I liked all of them and I think it's really incredible that people so young could make these in like a week! 😳 🤯 🥳

Back in my day, we didn’t have any “friends” to play instruments with us. We would have to play the whole thing by ourselves! I remember fondly how kids would take a vacation to Chernobyl in hopes of growing other arms. Kids these days and their “help”.

Georgii and Jiaqi did well with Brett and Eddy, I had fun especially with Jiaqi's expressions throughout the whole video. First piece, beautiful, totally hear the Joe Hisashi inspiration. Made me think of a less melancholic version of the scene in spirited away where Haku is finally freed, then ending with an imagined scenario of the end of Peter Pan with the Darling children returning to their home and touching down softly with Peter looking down sadly, knowing they cannot stay with him. 8/10 (I love Ghibli music) Second piece, absolutely blown away by the intricacies of the music, and the sheer amount of complexity packed into it with all four instruments. The composer must have spent ages and gives me the impression they are a true polymath or a composing prodigy. 9/10 Third piece, very fun! I always enjoy instrumental storytelling, as readers can probably tell from my imaginings with the first piece. One minor critique (which is purely opinion and has no basis in the skill of the composer) is that I wish there was a more recognizable musical cue upon the "realization that the boys are late for dinner" and the transition into the "rushing" section. Either that, or make the end of the previous phrase more abrupt, and the rest between phrases longer. 6/10 Fourth piece... I'm not sure how much of my opinion is based on the difficulty of sightreading the piece and the small errors our lovely quartet inevitably made, or by my inherent dislike for atonal or discordant music (I know, I'm a philistene) but I did get the impression that the tone of the piece was slightly confused at some points. There was a consistent chaotic energy throughout the piece, but there were certain sections that started to sound like Gershwin (difficult to hear through the discordant background, but still) which then transitioned into something vaguely reminiscent to some of the action jazz style found in the soundtrack to Cowboy Bebop, and finally back to utter chaos. Do I just not like true jazz? Maybe. This piece gave me weird feelings. 4/10 I loved the fifth piece! While the storytelling was subtler than the third piece, I still found myself very engaged and especially appreciated the willingness to sacrifice extra complexity to allow the simple, but beautiful cello section to thrive. Additionally, the combination of Western scales with more traditional eastern scales (both recognizable at different points in the music) added a touch of variety that left me craving more. 8/10 Final piece... wow. Blew me away with the soundscape they created. Brings to mind a few things at different points. The first, of course, was the excitement of sitting in the midst of a crowded but quiet theatre as the full orchestra in the pit warms up, immediately cutting down the chatter of the crowd and enveloping everyone in a curtain of sound. The second was more abstract, a feeling of gazing up at the globe of a sky without the atmosphere impeding the stars, nebulae and galaxies on full display, and somehow having the strong feeling that space and the universe isn't quite as empty as we are told by science. A richness to the backdrop of stars and a feeling of closeness, and incredible distance at the same time, like a particularly enchanting planetarium. Composition "impressiveness": 7/10 , Personal Appreciation: 10/10

Update. Went to Carnegie Hall. Heard two fantastic contemporary pieces performed by Ensemble Signal. First by Michael Gordon, Weather One and second (Cruel Sisters) by Julia Wolfe. Imagine closing your eyes and music washes over you. In trance like state. Open your eyes to see almost every violin and viola being held like a guitar being strummed while first violin imitating a harp with stinging pizzicato. After performance grabbed a bite at restaurant near the hall. I see second (third?) violinist ordering a burger. Being out of character for a local I say hello, expressed my admiration for the entire ensemble. Then I asked if she knows 2Set? Yes she does. Told her I watched your fan composers from two days ago and I commented I’d be at Carnegie Hall tonight. So closing the loop. 1. See 2 set fan composer post 2. I post saying I’d be at CH to see if there was anything good tonight. 3. At CH. hear great music. 4. Meet violinist. Yes she knows 2Set 5. I tell her I’ll post again tonight regarding evening performance. 6. Here is post. Professional musicians around the world know 2 Set. So cool. Bye.
