I feel like if Loki does have a saving grace, it's that when he loses, he's clearly mortified. He's not so deluded that he can't tell when he's lost. And there's nothing wrong with him wanting to win, he just needs to learn to occasionally accept help from others and not always be so alone. I think that's achieved when he says "We have a Hulk" (echoing Tony's comment to him). He's finally seeing some value in being part of a team. It also shows he's been keeping such points in mind, even if they didn't resonate right away.

I don’t think Loki has a love hate relationship with Frigga. He loves her, and what he says in that scene in TDW is the result of his self hated and not hated for his adoptive mother.
