Great band from the 60's - 70's. Each was great instrumentally and all were excellent singers. They never made it big because of all the other exceptional bands during that time. Today, Fanny would wipe the floor with pretty much any band, easily, I might add.

But they were a very rare type of rock band, and the first of its kind. So what if there was tons of competition back then.

KZfaq dropped these ladies into my playlist about a week ago, a song called "Ain't It Peculiar"..... I always considered myself well rounded in my musical taste and knowledge, I like some obscure bands... and I was downright floored by this band having never heard of them before... :( My loss. I can't believe I didn't know about this. It is embarrassing and humbling. This is one of the greatest bands I've ever seen. These ladies are awesome, a real force. I'd say better late than never but I really feel like I was deprived of something special not knowing about them earlier in my life. What a great version of Badge. Incredible band.

You don't give your age so I'm guessing you were born late 1950s-late 60s, but I've also met people my age who never heard of them. How that happened I don't know since they opened for plenty of top tier male bands all over the world. Me, I'm in my early 70s and had the treat of seeing these ladies live in 1971 (I think since it was just a few weeks before their "Charity Ball" album release) opening for The James Gang at a Denver venue again, I think it was at the University of Denver). Long story short: Joe and the boys should have opened for Fanny that night. That concert wasn't my "eureka moment" since I knew of them and owned their first album and I had also seen Joe Walsh from the beginning of his career being from Stow, Ohio-about four miles from Kent where the Measles (Joe's first band of any note) played most weekends. Still love The James Gang recordings, but these ladies are one of the few groups/singers I've gobbled up everything I can find of theirs that has been recorded. There is still one I don't have and that is a "live bootleg" from a small studio in Cleveland, Ohio in 1972. It's from Slick (as in Earl Slick) Music as he was Jean's partner at the time. New it sells for $400 and there is one used one I came across for $50.

Agreed an outstanding performance. High energy with excellent execution. I am trying to remember how I found out about them. I think I just thought their Fanny Hill album looked interesting and purchase it. I was floored by this LP and got two others (Charity Ball, Survivor(?)). I have yet to physically meet anyone who has heard of them before I introduced Fanny to them. I was a teenager in Baltimore, MD USA at the time and don't remember ever hearing them on the radio.

Luck is much more of a factor than it should be. It takes good management along with having what promoters and producers consider to be the right image at the right time. It's a shallow world out there. The Beatles struggled to even get a record deal for a long time. They finally got a record deal and then hit the United States at exactly the right time. Ten years earlier or later, they probably wouldn't have gotten that far. I think Fanny might have been big time in the 80s or 90s. They wouldn't have a prayer now. It's a crazy business.

I believe the main reason they did not get the recognition and fame they deserved is because the listening audience in that day didn't accept or take seriously an all female band, regardless how great they were. It wasn't mismanagement or the record producers.
