A little over 4 years ago I installed a 12 VDC FanTastic RV roof vent fan in the main living area of our Keystone Cougar trailer. - www.loveyourrv.com/installing...
I installed it mainly to help keep us cool when off-grid camping (aka boondocking) and for quickly removing excess moisture and cooking odors from the RV.
Overall I've been pleased with the fan, it moves a ton of air with relatively low power consumption. Roughly 1.5 - 3 amps depending on the speed setting of low, medium and high. The model I chose also has a built-in thermostat control so I can set it only to run when needed.
In this video, I disassemble the fan for cleaning. I remove the fan blade and motor assembly. While I have the motor out, I try to fix an annoying low-speed squeaking that has recently developed.
The motor isn't designed to come apart, so I try and work some silicone lubricant spray down the fan spindle shaft. Hopefully, it can find its way into the bearing. If that doesn't solve the problem, I may have to order a replacement motor.
Once cleaned and lubed I reassemble the Fantastic fan and give it a test run.

I assume you gotta use their top vent. I want to add a fan in a regular vent location. Two issues, it is a 14x14 regular Camco vent in a new Winnebago. Also, VERY close to front curve and the Fantastic and Maxx fans are bigger. How many inches does the front of the vent extend from the 14" opening? Approximately is good, no need to go up there and remove outer cover. Thanks Ray...

@@bobcole3852 I'm pretty sure will work with a regular vent cover, the Fantastic Vent is for better airflow.

It looked like a ball bearing on the fan's motor shaft. "Sealed" ball bearings eventually use up their grease supply and go dry. Squirting silicone oil into the bearing may help for a while until the silicone evaporates, too. I used to work at a vacuum cleaner repair shop. On rebuilt vacs which the manager did not want to spend any money on, we re-greased dry motor ball bearings (if they were easily accessible and not damaged). The black plastic side plate can be pried off and the bearing repacked. This will double its life and save the cost of buying a new motor. With the fan's motor case welded together, the rear bearing is inaccessible. However, it is usually the front bearing that fails first since it carries the weight of the fan and motor armature. (Note: The squeak could also be coming from the motor brushes if it is not brushless.)

Next time you have to reattach a wire that might end up needing to be undone again use a male and female spade or bayonet connectors. Makes it easier down the road. Thanks for the State Park info from last video.

When I took mine apart to add a PWM speed controller, i took it apart from the inside (bottom side), i was able to access all the wire connectors there and unplug the wires without cutting them. Also, adding a PWM controller is an easy way to save power while boondocking, it will let you adjust your fan to many more increments than just the 3 settings it comes with, and its more efficient because the original speed controller is just a series of resistors.

I had same sound when brand new, I unscrewed and dropped some T9 Boshield Lube and ok since one 1/2 year. Just cleaned my two, same model. I Took the fan fins part off from the trailer by wiggleling it and pulling. Than on the roof, loosened the bottom screw of the Hinge than undo the top screw, the lid canteen be freed and cleaned without undoing the hinge. I did not want to cut the wires so I brought all cleaning gear-lube-Plastic protectant on the roof :-0) I wish it had connectors that clip on, I am not electrically inclined. So tooth brush and Q-tips and all,, I then put plastic protectant from UV Like M303 or Protect All or else on top of the Fantastic Fan Covers. I find the bugs don't stick so much, I put all back together and re-screw the fans fins part from inside the trailer. Thanks for this Video Ray I always love to see the cleanness of your roof, while I was up there I I tried to turn white my dirty silicone spots.

The original FanTastic Fan company used to have a lifetime parts warranty, then they got acquired by Atwood 2010 and they stopped that, then Atwood was bought by Dometic. I have the Atwood version. I've found the fan on eTrailer for $35 so not too bad. I'll give Dometic a call if the squeak continues, see what they might do. Cheers, Ray

For years I've used a teflon lube from Radio Shack (64-2301a) for PC CPU and Power Supply fans. It's brought dead seized fans back to life. Once lubed I've never had to mess with them again. These were systems that ran 24/7. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they carry it anymore. I've seen teflon lube on Amazon DuPont but haven't tried it as I still have enough to last me a long time.

Ray Keep a close eye on the motor. When the bearings start to get noisy and squeaky. The next thing that can happen is the motor will seize up. The normal issue with sealed motor of that kind is the bearing opposite the shaft is failing.

Thanks for the review of the fan. With the price of the 802250, I'm thinking the motor should last longer than three years. You make or break a sale, when I'm thinking about an upgrade. Thank you Ray for another helpful how to video! Will that fan fit in a standard vent /fan hole? I'd like to replace the fan in my bathroom with one, or maybe a vortex fan.

Yes, my roof vents are the standard size, The difference is the Fantastic fan is a little harder to install as you have to remove the old roof vent - www.loveyourrv.com/installing-fantastic-vent-fan-rv/ versus the Vortex that installs into the existing vent. The Hengs Vortex amzn.to/2TcgSUs is cheaper and easier to install but Fantastic is a little better quality, IMHO. Cheers, Ray

@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 5 жыл бұрын
I make sure to wear soft-soled flat shoes and walk gingerly and be wary of tripping over vents and things. Depends on what kind of board has been used for the roof, ours has 3/8ths so is pretty strong, I'm 195 lbs and its never been a problem, usually, if there is a ladder attached OEM its a good indication of it being a walk on the roof. The rubber is really strong, stands up well short of piercing or slicing it with a sharp object. Cheers, Ray

I'm not too sure how the remote controlled ones work as mine is just a manual opening in one. It has a turn knob. I guess the shaft could seize if corrosion had time to build up. Otherwise its a pretty simple mechanical setup.

I’ve just bought a 05 diesel pusher and I’m going to put eternabond on the roof how has yours held up over time and should I remove the caulk around the sky lights and then put the tape down or put the tape directly over the caulk?
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 5 жыл бұрын
Here is a review update I did summer 2017 - www.loveyourrv.com/rv-roof-repair-eternabond-review/ Not much has changed since then, no leaks and still happy, basically no maintenance has been required. My OEM Dicor lap sealant was still in good shape so decided to leave it. I used a solvent to clean it really well. Acetone works or mineral spirits if you're careful not to get on the rubber roof too much. Once I had the sealant layer looking like new again, no dirt at all. I taped right over it. The 4-inch Eternabond is wide enough to cover the sealant and overlap on both sides. Cheers! Ray

As with the liquid silicone Ray used, WD-40 is not an appropriate lube for bearings. It mostly just cleans and displaces moisture. 3inOne oil will probably work best in this application. It lubricates and dissolves rust and corrosion.
