Just an additional note. I had a neighbor of Swedish extraction. His father immigrated I believe, the neighbor was a retired machinist and we became friends. When ever I did any little thing for him his response was always the same. Tusen tak, I may spell it wrong, but I can say it and I know what it means.. so tusen tak, a thousand thanks for sharing your blacksmithing with us, watching you make useful things in your shop is very enjoyable to this 89 year old in Colorado.

As for coal dust as a punch lube I think it works by a combination of factors: Like you say, expanding gasses, but I believe the most important one is that the carbon will form a kind of film between punch and workpiece, so you get less direct metal on metal contact, and it will fill in any miniscule cracks or grooves preventing you from driving the actual metal into them that would otherwise cause sticking.
