I’m sorry about the situation with the land there. Thank you for explaining it to us. I’m in the US and we have plenty of our own problems but it’s interesting to learn how other places are screwed up as well!

Had the same issues with Somerset wildlife trust gave up all that land five years ago . Best thing I ever did.

The farming subsidy/ grant system in the uk is flawed that the landowner is the one who makes the claim and not the actual person on the ground doing the work

In the United States our cost share grants require government plans and tend to be more expensive for road work and fencing then just building it yourself. Back in the eighties a lot of farms in my county actually went bankrupt building silos which were a heavily promoted government cost share. Also my farming collectivity makes a giant tax break across all the fields land owners, but we pay heavily for being self employed.

Electric fence, one plain wire about a foot off the ground thats nice and hot should sort you fence crawler out. I'm mob grazing in Australia and divide each hard fenced paddock into strips with 2 strands of electric polybraid. Most of mine are hair sheep but all sheep go head first so as long as the nose touches, they should get a good kick. I'm using a portable solar setup on a small trailer that I move with a quad bike. Been very happy with the improvement of the paddocks as I don't return to the same ground for 6mths.

It's so tricky getting away when you have livestock or land. I only have poultry but not managed it for 5 years. Hope you do both get a break you work so hard. Are the goats fully contained though?😂

You can make up a triangle frame around the neck of the troublemaker about 800mm long timbers stops them pushing through holes in your fences

We pay rent for animals to graze. Interesting you get it for free and someone else gets paid for your work. Crazy world.

we pay for all of our land apart from that bit.. but its more about the land the than the animals.. the animals get very little benefit from it.

I had a few pet sheep and used to graze them for free round various fields in my village. A number of people have the odd acre or two they don’t know what do with or can’t be bothered so my four legged lawn mowers did a reasonable job, saved getting a man on a machine to do it. It suited me, but then I wasn’t farming, just keeping a few sheep for my pleasure.
