In this video we install a modern zinc gutter system onto a traditional French farmhouse. To buy brackets off the shelf was really expensive relative to the total amount of roof we have on the farm, so we decided to fabricate the brackets ourselves. Next we drilled a load of holes in the wall, set up some string lines and got to work. A few drill bits were snapped along the way but other than that, we had no major problems.
Let me know below how you fix gutters in your area, any positive or negative thoughts you have about this way!

On a restoration project such as this, saving money by devising ways to do the job yourself & improvising is the best option. You are doing that & seem to manage it in a way that gets the job done efficiently & is eye appealing. Nice work!

Carl I'm loving this stuff, excellent work👍. I started working on old farm buildings with my uncle when I was 11. Some demolished and replaced with new large modern structures, others refurbished as it depended what the intended use was. Also cast sillage pits, cattle crushes and concreted lots of the farmyard as the winter weather in NW Ireland is ultra wet!! All via a mixer on the back of the tractor AFTER drawing the sand and gravel via trailer (all shovelled on) from local ancient beach areas (licenced). Uncle still farms it nearly 50 years later. We worked extremely hard but had great fun, your videos brought amazing memories back for me. It nearly killed my auntie trying to feed us as we were burning so many calories every day. 👍👍👍

Hello from the Pacific Northwest. Beautiful gutter system you have there! We are on year 5 of a similar gutter (6” / 15 cm half round galvanized steel) install (father and son installed). The only difference is that we have are using rain chain instead of downspouts. We get a tremendous amount of precipitation here - 167 days a year on average . We have had 2 snow/ ice storms of 18” (45 cm) or greater accumulation since install and several windstorms of 50+mph (80+ kph). I am pleased to report the gutters still hold tight and have not needed any repairs. All joints are riveted and sealed with gutter mastic. You should anticipate a long happy life with your gutters😀👍 Fantastic channel have created. You and your dad make a good team. Keep up the good work. PS- still looking for the metric conversion factor for “days”.

I've been going through your entire playlist : your videos are very soothing as a background while I'm working! Your voice-over, the nature sounds, you working and the wind chimes combine in the most wonderful way. Thank you! I realise I'm super late to this video, but why aren't birds welcome to roost under the roof tiles ? The entire construction seems so solid that one nest can't really damage that, right? Restoring the farm must feel to some types of birds like a restoration of their habitat, no?

@@carlroge It is doubly difficult when product is readimade and doesn't or can't be adapted for your situation. The joy of your guttering is that it was malleable unlike the plastic stuff for domestic use in the UK. Some friends of mine have a house near Malaga where rain gutter is never fitted. An after market product is used that clamps on the roof tile edge which is fine until the tiles fail. Your job looks in keeping with the age of the house and will age accordingly.

I think you should have soldered the joints rather than riveted, those rivets will not last. That is how I learnt of my French roofer. I think the reason they do it is because in France they get heavy rain and you will be surprised at how much pressure builds up. Nice video series!

Nice work. Thanks for sharing your work with us. One suggestion: I think it is easier to cut the hole for the downspout in the gutter by just cutting into it with a hacksaw and then using tin snips (metal cutting shears) to cut the hole. In my opinion this is a better (less dangerous and cleaner) approach than using the hole saw on an electric drill.
