Just a Few Acres Farm

Just a Few Acres Farm

4 жыл бұрын

On our small farm, we have a diverse collection of antique Farmall tractors, originally made by the International Harvester company. We use these tractors every day, and love repairing, restoring, and working with them. In this video, I give you a tour of our Farmall tractor collection and show the tractors in use, including a Cub, Super A, Super C, H, MD, 504, 656, F-20 and McCormick Deering 10-20. I also explain some of the features that make each tractor unique, and give some tips for buying a tractor for your small farm.

Hi, I'm a 17 yr old farmer from Ireland and your videos contain a lot of invaluable information regarding profitability of small farms, (although US and Irish agriculture differ a lot). I would love to go down a similar route to what you have done ie, selling direct to consumers. I'm not on a big farm and have about 30 acres to start on so finding a niche, like organic, grass fed beef, would be needed in order to make it sustainable and profitable. Seeing you do it makes me think it's possible, so thanks for all of your videos. Daire

Wow, a 656 Hydro. I don't know anybody still using one of those where I live. The hills were too steep for them around here and people tried to plow with them. They were all scrapped by the time I came around. (37 years ago). It's great to see one still working.

There's quite a few still in use around here. Gear drives are definitely more common though. I'd probably be running a gear drive if I had to do tillage with it.

Because of the mechanical losses a hydro has they don't pull nearly as hard as a gear drive 656. For pto work they're great and as he stated, that one spent most of it's days on a sawmill

When I was a kid ('60s and '70s), my dad had a 12 hp Massey-Harris Pony, and we worked 10 acres of hard clay with it. I walked many a mile behind an old horse drawn breaking plow, and we had a section of spring tooth harrow and an old cultivator. We raised tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and other truck patch vegetables, and I sweated enough to fill a pond. Wish I still had the old gal...

Another wonderful video! I grew up in south Louisiana in the 80's and 90's. We helped different people that owned 30 to 500 head of momma cows (in exchange for hay for our horses). They had tractors from the 70's and earlier. Case, White, International, Oliver, David Brown, Massey, and there was probably a Ford amongst those well used tractors too. Your 650's remind me a lot of those tractors they used.

"If it ain't red, keep it in the shed." My grandpa's very first tractor was a Farmall F-14 on steel wheels. (Probably because his rival brother got a John Deere tractor.) He later got 2 H's and 2 M's. My Dad even wrote International Harvester back in 1964 telling them about how reliable their Farmall tractors were and they sent him a beautiful all color photo catalog of EVERY item they sold. When Dad got home from the Army he used the money he'd saved up and bought a 706 diesel with an add on blower. It was quite a jump between it and the old inline 4 cylinder gas engines he was used to. Traded it 10 years later for an 856 that I grew up on along with an M and 400 that we still have. A few years ago Dad got the 1086 that he'd always wanted. I'd like to get him the 560 he wanted as a teenager. RIP International Harvester. You were a great company that became like part of the family as one tractor was passed down 3 or 4 generations in the same family. They overproduced tractors during the 70's and the agriculture economy was awful the entire 80's decade. Things looked on the up and up for them during the early 80's but a worker's strike was the final nail in the coffin.

HA! That's funny! I grew up on a farm in the 60's, primarily. My dad would buy old F-20 Farmalls. Sometimes the engines would be seized and we would brake it loose, then go to Farm & Fleet and get a set of over sized sleeves and pistons for it. He really thought this was big time. My brother took one of them to Ag class at HS and did, what we would call today, a restoration. Not only sleeves and pistons, but milled the head, paint, decals...everything. Turned out beautifully. Eventually my brother bought a 560 diesel which really made us look rich...lol.

We use D15 and WD45 Allis Chalmers on Our farm. Multiple Narrow front end and 1 wide. Then one has a sickle bar on the side of the tractor instead of the back like you have. I love Allis Chalmers so much. We use a 6080 Allis to bale small square bales with New Holland 570 Square Baler with me stacking in the wagon. But we use a gehl discbine or Brush hog to mow the fields and use the same New holland rake and same basic tedder you have. Then we have 8030 that barely gets used. So nice watching you with your Classic tractors is lovely. So refreshing to see someone make videos and farming using classic irons out here. New equipment can be so expensive. I've been watching for the last 2 years and somehow I missed this one. I loved the breakdown, and as always appreciate your humble acknowledgement that not ALL things on a farm or ranch are based solely on the $. Some things need to be done for a peace of mind. I'm an engineer...Mechanical, so I'm always tinkering. I purchased a small country for my retirement stay (653 Acres +/- ) for elbow room away from people. I wanted to go back to ranching cattle as I did as a kid. I buy all kinds of broken crap or get it given to me, just to stick in my shop to work on with coffee in the morning. I for one loved the complete breakdown and restore of the Farm H. Keep making those, too much fun.

Wow! I've started watching your videos not long ago but I just love tripping across the tractor stuff. As an ex- spare parts IH guy, I remember many of these models from those good old days. Someone at work recently mentioned about the Gas/Diesel tractor & of course I jumped into the conversation with what info I knew which both blew them away but also shut up my boss as he "thought" he knew everything about tractors. I love my old Inters & having worked at a couple of dealerships many years ago you always bring back my memories just flooding back about the smaller/older models (most of the local stuff was for market gardeners or small acreage) The 2 & 3 Point linkage was a huge turning point in agriculture that many would not understand. I certainly remember when we got our first adjustable linkage system on a tractor on our farm as a child, we felt very lucky to even have the "luxury" of having it! Hydraulics was another Game changer back in those days. Thanks Heaps for the info & memories!!

One thing about it Mr. Pete, once you overhall them and get them right, they will last as long as you need them and I'm sure they will outlast any new ones. A couple of farmers here in my neck of the woods had 656s and they were both real work horses. One belonged to one of Daddy's cousins. I've seen him plant tobacco with it with a two row pick up planter behind and when he would get to the end, he could spin it around and come back planting in the next 2 rows.

I grew up on a dairy farm out near Cooperstown and have the same love for the old Farmall tractors. My grandfather had a Farmall 706 with an IH 2000 loader that worked great for the day to day tasks. We used an IH 826 for bailing, chopping corn and plowing with a 4 bottom Oliver plow. We also had a Farmall C and a Ford 9N that 2 of my Uncle's restored after the cows were sold off. I appreciate what you do and I hope to be back in the small farm saddle in a similar manner in the near future as well. Take care!

What a trip down memory lane! My uncle had a super C with the tricycle front end. Perfect raking tractor and for shuffling wagons to and from the field. There was also a well used 350 later replaced with a 560. No mention of the torque amplifier?!? We worked them like crazy. I discovered the hard way that when engaged, it also eliminated any engine braking! Not good when bringing a very loaded hay wagon down a steep hill into a 90 degree turn just above the pond. Was on grass so the tires just slid when I hit the brakes. Finally figured it out just before disaster. You could hear my aunt bitching me out from the barn 500 yards away!
