@Thatweirdperson It looks so rough with the file, then driving nails into it and burning it with hot metal. Or when the triangular part under the hoove is scratched out (don't know what it's called). I always await the horses to freak out or run away, but they always stay still and don't mind. Didn't know it was relaxing for the horse, but that explains it. I thought horseshoes usually went straight onto the hoof, so the addition of the leather pad is interesting. Does it provide extra comfort for the horse, like a padded insole?
@gwammeh2 жыл бұрын
I looked it up and it’s a horseshoe pad! Normally, horseshoes *do* go directly on the hoof, but this horse’s hooves grew wonky from improper shodding, which can be painful and put all the wrong pressure on the foot. Think walking with a massive pebble in your shoe *all* the time, so you walk all wonky, and now the rest of your foot hurts because you’re not supposed to walk like that, and then your leg starts hurting and then your hip and etcetera. The horseshoe pad helps absorb the impact of walking and running around so that the hoof can heal better! Which is *super* important for horses, because a horse that can’t walk properly on all four hooves can’t survive much longer and needs to be put down, sadly.
@---td5fg2 жыл бұрын
Almost correct. Every time the horses take a step it sends a shockwave up the leg (that helps with circulation). However some horses, that have thin sols, or that have sensitive feet etc, need the pad applied to lessen the load. However in this case, can you see he put some black putty onto the middle of the foot? That putty is there to treat something (depending on what it is). I expect something like thrush etc however I don't know the medical history of this horse. The pad is there to keep the putty simply going off into the grass and keeps the inside of the foot clean. Hope this helped xx

Googling has lead me to this conclusion: the foot is damaged and a leather sole with medicated or antimicrobial packing underneath is used to protect the foot from further damage as a temporary measure until healed.
