John Galliano is a modern day Icarus parable. Flew to the sun, then with just a couple of poorly chosen words, he was an outcast and pariah.
One of the most celebrated and equally notorious fashion designers of our time. He catapulted onto the french fashion scene with the help of some of the biggest names in the business who saw in him a unique talent. His creativity is unparalleled, drawing on his rich heritage and love of culture. He is a character unto himself, as much as the models open the theatre of his runway, Galliano himself draws the final curtain.
His own physicality and costumes often rivaled that of his couture gowns. Galliano injected fun into the stuffy world of high fashion, exploring opulence as a form of entertainment. His shows were completely immersive and rich with story. Galliano redefined the possibility of a fashion show, moving it beyond the sales room, beyond the industry to a level of public spectacle that would attract the attention of the world.
After moving to Paris, Galliano became the first British designer to lead a French Couture House with his appointment at the House of Givenchy. But it was not long before he was promoted to the head of Christian Dior. Not only was he an outsider, but at just 36 years of age he was considerably young for a role of such magnitude.
It was his youthful and energetic spirit which would redefine the world of fashion and French Haute Couture, with a legacy that would outlast his final and dramatic dismissal from the house. This is a story of Galliano the renegade, whose penchant for rebellion would make him one of the world’s top creative geniuses and the bad boy of fashion.
Born in 1960 in the British Territory of Gibraltar to his native father and Spanish mother, a plumber and flamenco teacher respectively, John Galliano moved to the South of England when he was just six years old.
His parents moved in hope for improved financial employment opportunities and Galliano explains how he was timid and insecure growing up in a strict Roman Catholic family. Finding it difficult as a foreign child being brought up in an English environment, Galliano often felt different and left out in his neighbourhood. He recalls how his mother would insist on dressing him in extravagant attire for running errands and everyday occasions and as a result he often felt bullied and estranged at the London boy’s Grammar school that he attended.
After finishing high school, Galliano went on to study at Saint Martin’s School of Art, from which he graduated in 1988 with a first class honours degree. Known for his whimsical and outrageous designs, his first collection titled “Les Incroyables” was extremely well received by critics, and was sold in Browns, the London fashion boutique. Galliano then moved on to launch his own fashion label with stylist Amanda Harlech and milliner, Stephen Jones. The designer was however not very gifted with finances, which led to the termination of multiple backers and his eventual bankruptcy in 1990. It was then that Galliano decided to move to Paris to make his skills more prominent to the international fashion industry, improve his client base and gain the financial backing he knew he could achieve.

I worked for the group and can say that designing a dozen collections a year with the long long hours that each show involves is a horrendous workload. Not to worry they have staff whose 'job' it is to supply on demande ANYTHING that could prep them up and allow them to go on and continue working. They filled John up with X and ignored his fatigue and worry and as soon as he began to be a problem they used the first thing they could to get rid of him as in there minds there were many ready to take his place NOW that he had put Dior back in the limelight. I met John, our dogs played together, he is a nice person.

@@Fashionindustrybroadcast Yes it is amazing that many survived this horrible treatment but some today like Grazia at Dior seem more grounded. I used to work with Martine Sitbon and we got on great for a few seasons then Karl Lagerfeld came back to Chloé and he and I got on great, it was an amazing experience. I am happy to be retired and no longer be part of this world. I miss the actual creation but not all the politics. I had so many arguements with hierarchy because I would not treat my staff like mere numbers. I was at Kenzo for six years and saw three presidents come and go. I could have stayed there for many years but chose to move to Brazil. I did love my collaboration with Antonio Marras. My last job was director of Developpement for Ines de la Fressange ( second time round ) (( pity the CEO was an asshole !! ))

Galiano's work had to be seen to be believed. Years ago I saw his French Revolution-inspired gowns at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His unique talent was extraordinary and undeniable. I often wondered how any fashion designer could possibly be original when everything has been done, but he managed it. His collection was a tour de force.

I have to say, this documentary really helped me a lot. I was sick to my stomach after seeing John's rant so long ago. I was so distressed by it because, clearly, he was out of his head. I do not know the man personally, but I wish I did. What a talent! He needed an intervention and should have had more done for him. If nothing else, cut back on some of the collections and allow him to recharge. Trashing him…firing him…turning their backs on him…how inhumane! Oh, and to kick him out of his own company and continue to use his name? Hypocritical!!! The fashion world is full of racists, bigots, freaks, and major weirdos. They are that way and make no apologies for being that way. John, through a drug and alcohol fueled lifestyle, during one evening lost everything. It was not fair. What a disgusting way he was treated. I feel for him. I hope he is clean and sober now and able to truly move forward. He knows who he can count on. Let that be enough. The heck with all others.

Right now, he’s the only left that does TRUE Couture, and no one, no one, comes close of what he can do! I absolutely adore Margiela for giving him the chance after his downfall at Dior, and his work for the house have been supper, but I need him to let loose again, I love him most when he lets his bizarre imagination take over and produce literal pieces of walking art. I get his older, wiser and wants people to focus on his work and not him, and the current global trend to be more conscious but damn if I don’t miss him at Dior. His era there was simply unmatched and seeing the current direction of the house brings me sadness.

He should not have said those things but... When he was working at Dior the sales grew up by 300%. He was working his ass off. Owners of Dior didn't care about him being drunk, drugged, all they wanted was results and money. There is so much hypocrisy! Anyone working as much as him would go crazy sooner or later. ANYONE, ME, YOU, ANYONE!!! And we do not have to point out his artistic soul, soul of a fragile creative being... I'm happy for him he can work at Maison Margiela, he got away from those monsters...

I remember the Spring ‘98 Dior HC collection being such an unexpected sensation that it made all the evening newscasts in America, bringing Dior to make urgent headlines in America for perhaps the first time since 1947... and all because of John Galliano’s new direction for the house. Later that summer in July 1998 André Leon Talley and Isabella Rossellini hosted a very unique “Fall Fashion Preview” for ABC where again Galliano’s ‘Diorient Express’ stole the entire show. It was a magical time that era. His Matrix Gainsboroughs the following year at L’orangerie with Carmen Kass parachuting in glistening Dior Bronze zebra tan was my personal favorite of all his collections… before all the cheap strass and saddle bags took over in the 2000s. I’m very glad to have watched your documentary. Thank you very much indeed. And kudos for not diminishing Fayçal Amor’s instrumental role in helping John during his early days in Paris. Bravo! 🤩

Because you cant wear the clothes. It shows that you support his views. These elite women see eachother all the time. At shows, party's, events, occasions, charities. Its a "club". So if someone shows up wearing a piece of his, the word would get around. Its a real shame too. The whole situation is just very upsetting in their world.

As a young girl growing up in the early 70’s one of the first real designer bags I remember was a blue Dior logo bag. A friends neighbor invited us over to play & his mom had such a purse. Turned out they were very wealthy Cubans who got out right before Castro.

What he said was nasty and plain stupid (especially in France), which is explained by a drunken blackout ( it is true, you can't remember a thing). However I sincerely hope he gets redemption. He's unique. He's been cancelled enough. He learnt his lesson. Enough already.

Galliano suffered from the Icarus Syndrome, he flew too close to the sun and his wings melted. So sad.

A very Draconian response to a diatribe born out of extreme stress from his work load and dive towards a breakdown . The French government and The knighthood they bestowed on him and took back couldn’t be worth very much to any of its holders , if at least it did not bestow on him the right to be heard out and judged fairly on all that was going on in his life at the time ; which is the basic right of every human being regardless of of knighthood. John Gallianos is a creative genius and that is a whole world in itself . People should not be small and judge!

They literally milked him dry and abandoned him when he broke. It’s all about the bottom line with the major fashion houses. I’m so happy that Galliano’s found a new path with Maison Margiela.

Well we only heard what he said. What did these young ladies say to him? What he said was inexcusable but I’d like to know the full story.

I suspect he was thinking of the worst possible thing to say that would upset the most. (And he certainly did)! It doesn't make sense that he actually felt, inside, those things he said. I wish he would've immediately explained that. Ofcourse I'm speculating. However, my theory makes sense to me.

I honestly thought his career ended after the scandal, I haven’t heard anything about him in many years and didn’t know he was working for these other fashion houses. I was just thinking about him recently and was wondering what he is doing now.

I have done video coverage for many a runway show from as far back as 2003 through 2019 and have the archives on KZfaq as a thank you to all of the models and to the fashion industry for the opportunity to have covered all of the shows that I did over all of those years at New York Fashion week.
