In this video we take a look at the latest printer from Artillery, the Hornet. This is a pretty wild little machine that was teased a few months ago. Unlike the other printers from Artillery the Hornet features a Bowden style extruder and their new 32-Bit Ruby Mainboard. In this video we take a look at the specs, how it prints, and what my experience has been with this printer.

They do seem to have questionable QC. Some people have reported their printers not being properly grounded and having an exposed mains out.

pro tip: hot glue comes off like butter if you add a few drops of rubbing alcohol, it detaches like magic

Incidentally, it also works great to get tree sap off the car...(not 3d printing related, but might be useful) 😉 😅

Nice review. A tip for people that struggle with hot glue is to wet the glue with Isopropanol, works like magic.

I have had an Artillery Sidewinder for over a month now. I love the direct drive and all the bells and whistles. I haven't had any problems with the ribbon cable or the heater bed cables. Bed leveling has been very easy and I only adjust it once every two weeks with little to no adjustments. I have had numerous prints that were in the 12 to 23 hour range and haven't had any problems with bed adhesion. I would definitely buy another Artillery and have recommended the machine to many of my friends.

Exactly what i was thinking first time when i saw Hornet. With that small difference in price, Genius is the way. But if they correct the price to be more closer to the Ender, where it actually fits more, then it will be printer worth to try :)

I have the sidewinder x1 and I absolutely love it. Artillery is still under rated in the 3d printer game but have steadily made their way. They make solid machines, and this now includes the hornet. But I do agree with your final analysis, in that its a no brainer to get the genius over the hornet with the current price points. Great video btw

Thanks for watching and the feedback! I do agree they are one of the top out there in my opinion for low cost entry level 3d printers. They come with so many things that you would need to upgrade other machines to be able to run the same setup.

I know I'm a year late to this, but the artillery genius is 290€ excluding shipping and the hornet is 160€ including shipping, the hornet has to be worth it by now since they changed the price so much right?

I have the Genius, no regrets, would buy it again. The Hornet looks like several steps backwards in features. I can’t understand Artillery’s thinking in the making of this machine.

isopropyl alcohol removes hotglue extremely easly. I use it all the time in my drones.

I both love and hate that cable. I never enjoy proprietary components that may need replacing, but damn is that clean. Have you tried to pull the bowden tube out? If it can be pulled out it would make it a lot easier to love. Thanks for another great video!

I have not tried pulling the bowden tube out but I believe another user did try and they did not have luck. I may have to check this myself. I do agree it would be nice if they did have that for someone who wants to swap for capricorn or if you have a nasty jam that caused the need to replace one. Thanks watching :)

32-bit board, comparable printing space as Ender 3 albeit considerably faster - the look reminds me of the slick Asus Lamborghini laptop. Thanks for the intro MB!

Thanks for the feedback! It really depends, since I had to move into a one bedroom to save on rent I had to get ride of quite a few. If I had it my way I would have a huge farm. For now it is a combination of keep, tear down for other projects, give away or sell some. Quite a few do get torn down for parts right now sadly.

I have a sidewinder x1 that I've had for a couple of years. The machine is stock and just works. Learning to use CAD and slicer settings has been far more of a challenge than running the printer. This is the only printer I've owned, so nothing to compare to...but it does what I ask of it. I would like to upgrade to a Fulament setup for the bed eventually.

Pro-tip for removing hot glue: Use Alcohol. Like 99% alcohol. Saturate a little paper towel with it and just cover the glue joint for like 30 seconds. It should start to just come loose easily. If it doesn't add more alcohol and time, and it will. Given that those electronics can generate quite a bit of heat, I recommend removing it. By the way, this is Voultar's method for removing hot glue (I've tested it and it works though.) But I definitely recommend checking out his channel if you're into modifying electronics in any way.

It was probably bed adhesion that loosened your print. Try looking at the bed of any mains-powered bed on an artillery printer with a thermal camera. The temperature difference from center to corner can be as big as 20C.

I do agree that it was bed adhesion and I was able to fix this. I may need to pick up a thermal camera. Could be useful for both troubleshooting as well as future content creation. Thanks for the tip.

This is a nifty printer. I think they skimped on the display... That is such an affordable thing to upgrade. Do you ever run into issues with the Proto Pasta cardboard spools? I'm 0 for 2 and have had to re-spool them. The corrugate was kinked and snagged the filament... failed prints. Thanks for another great video.

with a 32 bit board the test would be to run a cylinder print through octoprint (by way of Rpi/octopi). There's a bandwith issue with the sidewinder x1 and octoprint based on its buffer limitations which causes the print to have a lot of blobs and zits.

it's a 32bit board, I'd love to see you push it!!! crank the speed to 11! hell I print at 200 with a 1300g bed slinger lightly modded anet a8, I say push it! the hotend could be a bottleneck tho, but it'd be fun to see what it can do

@L3D... the speed that you put into the slicer is not the one you will see during the print. Export your gcode to “gcodeanalyser.com”... apply the numbers of accel and jerk settings of your Anet and them check the real average speed and many more cool information about the speed (max, min, etc..)

I don't see the bennefit for this printer over like a ender 3 v2 and the bowden/ cable combo will be a pain to service wich will happen with it not being a all metal hotend so no it's a pass

I've watched at least a half dozen of your videos and I wanted to let you know that you just earned a new sub. Only thing I had a hard time with was it kind of feels like you rush to finish videos. I don't mean that in a rude way or anything because you have great content. I just mean you should try to slow down just a bit and not make it seem like you are rushing to finish a video. You have fantastic, in depth content and definitely keep up the great work.

As a complete noob when it comes to 3d printing. I am looking for a completely noob friendly printer as possible. With roughly $450 as a budget. Would the sidewinder or the genius be a good noob friendly beginner printer? It seems to have descent reviews on Amazon, and other sites. I would love to see some feedback on what to get. Tip: to remove hot glue, just use some isopropyl alcohol. Few drops are enough.

Yeah the Sidewinder is great. I am hoping they listen to the feedback and adjust the pricing for this machine. They are missing that super entry point Ender 3 pricing so far.

I do not believe you can remove the bowden, maybe they will offer it as an upgrade option or make it where the tube is not so tight.

I was burned owning a ender 3 pro that I spent way too much time and money trying to make it print like the models in your review..I never managed this and ended up with a resin printer.

Looks OK, like you stated the price is a tad high for it's feature set. BUT! the biggest issue! that hotend. Why haven't people noticed that that setup of the "V" shaped shell, takes all the cooling from the hot end fan and throw it down on to the bed/part? It looks like it's pushing out the back? which is covered by the 2020 extrusion! so the air is getting forced to flowing down and at the bed... unless there is some ducking in the back not shown?

I did not notice any issues with cooling in my testing but I do think it could definitely benefit from a slightly different fan shroud that angles it a bit more. Right now there is not a ton of control as to where the airflow is being thrown. Granted it did not seem to affect part quality or the hotends ability to heat. I agree with your statement though that there is room for improvement. The fan shroud on their other machines is superior IMO

I have seen a tiny bit on this. I havent had as good of an experience with Tevo or (Homer) printers. It has been some time since I have tested though so things could have changed.

Very quiet. The fans are the loudest aspect but considering there are two cooling fans it is much quieter than many machines I have tested.

Bowden, PTFE-lined hotend, no filament-sensor, no ABL, small bed and proprietary cabling at that price point? No thanks ... The looks probably cost money, but all that stuff will be in the way when trying to upgrade or even troubleshoot/fix. With these specs, it is more in plain old Ender-3 area, so sub $200...

Oh yeah, I have done that for years with no issues and no melting. That is my max, above that you want to go all metal.

I have used both lots over the years and both print what I want fine. I like direct for the times I want flexibles and I feel they do better with stringing. However, I do believe bowden can be pushed to print quicker.
