Just started riding 2 months ago and I can tell you that these videos have definitely helped me to be a better rider with a better understanding of what to do as well as what not to do , and it has most likely kept me at this point from making a bad mistake. Ive watched countless hours of videos and can hear your voice in my head as I’m coming up to turns that are sketchy. Not sure if I’m a good rider but with these videos I’m getting to be a better rider more quickly. Thank you.

A tip I got my my instructor was stay basically middle until you can see the exit from the turn. Don't commit to the turn (IE don't learn in hard, accelerate, and commit to a specific line) until you can see your exit. For beginners I think this is really good advice.

I've watched your videos since I got my first bike at the end of last summer. I grew up riding ATVs, snowmobiles, etc so riding a street bike for the first time was probably easier for me than it is for people who have no relevant experience. That being said, I’m picking it up quickly but still have a lot to learn. At 50 yo, I'm just cruising the country roads on my Harley Breakout enjoying the sound of the bike and the wind. Nothing to prove like I did when I was a kid :). But it's interesting because I rode this weekend and realized that one thing I do on occasion is look too close in front of me, right where you were pointing to in the video. And when I look much further down the road (which is not a natural thing actually), it truly is much easier to handle the bike in a turn at speed. You're doing great and responsible stuff with your videos. Keep it up! and Thanks!

I have a habit of that too because I've ridden on dirt so much and always had to watch where my front tire was going and the road in front of me, not so much ahead like the streets. Makes a huge difference entering corners without that "too fast" into corner anxiety.

It's interesting that as we watch your videos how often the topic of vision keeps coming up. I can really see how, when you turned way too late, how my eyes really were focused on the edge of the road and not where I want to go. The bike goes where you look and I'm looking right at the place I don't want to be. Great example because I looked right where you said we would if we turned incorrectly.

The last two minutes were the most important of the video. Describing how all riders ‘want’ to navigate a corner but providing the variables that take the optimal line away. Sounds confusing but once the rider practices consistently it is simple. I never want to say, ‘well, I survived that corner on every corner.’ Great video!

I love riding in the middle of my lane. Just completed a 120 mile 4 hour ride today, a lot of which was on narrow and very twisty mountain roads with huge pot holes and cars and trucks coming the other way. Having all that room to maneuver made it enjoyable and safe.

Couldn't agree more. Setting up too early will run you wide on the exit (and several other potential bad things). I see this all the time and not just beginners. Low speed hairpins will quickly show you why you should not enter at the inside of a right hand curve and near the center of the road on a left hand. You will be wide every time. Good info and good demo.

I always try to watch these kind of videos and make the conscious effort to apply them, otherwise what's the point. Excellent advice. Blind corners, especially left-hand ones, where cars and trucks have a natural tendency to go wide into your turn, can have you, get your head torn off, if you are leaning over that centerline mid turn (mirrors on trucks are way out into your lane). Right hand turns can get your head torn off if you are leaning into a tree limb, bush, a deer (that's a look you'll never forget...lol) and even parked car or truck mid turn (again truck mirrors are way into your lane). I actually ran off the edge of a highway, on an almost straight left-hand turn, because I was distracted. Ran the bike too close to the right edge, and right off it, onto the sandy shoulder going fifty miles per hour.. I dropped the bike too because the edge of the asphalt was about three inches up from the shoulder. That rear tire was never coming back on the highway. I should have simply stopped on the shoulder. Instead, I dropped the bike, and me, on our side, thankfully on an empty highway. You only do that once, going fifty mph, and it cures you of the, not paying attention, stuff. That happened over thirty years ago, and I am still pissed, at myself, I did that.

I just began watching your videos and your instructions have been spot on and very informative. I practice them when out on rides and have found that they make me a better rider. My high speed cornering has improved as a result. Long time off roader here but now riding the streets on a Triumph Bonneville and enjoying it, but it's definitely a different riding style from off road riding. Btw, I thought that area your riding in looked familiar, as you may already know, the back roads of San Diego county offers some excellent motorcycling.

MJ; your "open up the turn" at the beginning and the end is, to a surveyor, a hillbilly spiral curve. Like all railroad curves. Interstate highways and on/off ramps are sometimes Barnett spirals too. Especially older ones. We need to do that (no jerkey movements). Even car drivers instinctively do it too. I've seen the C/L oil stain marking out spiral curves on a regular constant radius road. Until your vid though; I never realized why we all do it........ sight distance and smoothness. It's nice when one technique solves two problems. So often in this universe; one fix causes another difficulty.

I have always thought that riding in the middle of the lane is where the most oil can be found; particularly in Southern California after or during a rainy day (remember it may have been 5 or 6 months since the last rainy day). Perhaps I am simply wrong because you seem to be happy to use the entire lane, depending upon how you want to ride a given curve, etc. Or maybe when you say "middleisch", you don't mean middle. Please clarify your thinking and would you change your lane position choices if the road is wet.

Good video! And just to put some numbers to it, the U.S. standard for highway-speed curves is a constant rate 200m radius. By making full use of a standard 12' wide lane, you can effectively increase this to a 220m radius in a full 90-degree curve. For a more typical 45-degree curve, making use of the technique you demonstrated, the effective curve radius increases by almost 67% to a ginormous 365m. That increase applies linearly to the centrifugal force pushing the bike toward the outside of the curve. So a 67% increase in effective radius = a 67% reduction in this force, thereby significantly reducing the lean angle required for a given speed through the curve.

Couple other things to consider when choosing your line: If you are following another vehicle stay out of their blind spot, meaning you may not want to be too far to the left or the right depending on how far back you are from the vehicle ahead. I tend to prefer slightly to the left or right of center, but this will change when in turns as you pick your line. Also I tend to avoid directly in the center depending on the road conditions since the center typically has more oil and debris, especially a factor if the road is wet.

I'm a chopper / cruiser rider, yet I can very much relate to what you have said in the video.. A few times the 'ride the right way' saved my ass / my co-rider's ass, in situations like e.g. car in the opposite direction riding on the / slightly beyond the edge of the lanes split, idiots behind / in front of me riding the 'let's see what happens' way, etc.. I managed to avoid all, with relative ease and minimal adrenaline rush. I'm sort of a 'do NOT look in front of your bike, but where TO you want it to go and observe the environment all the time' kind of a guy (since my day 1), and, probably thanks to that, in the last 15 years, I had only a single accident (a so called no-party-fault one, where, at 25kmph, except for me, nobody was hurt). Watching the video, where you demonstrate the riding mistakes / inaccuracies makes me wonder WHO can call themselves seasoned, as I perceive those 'riding flaws' at guys with a lot of experience as well.. Maybe it's an item for a discussion, but from empirical standpoint, I tend to think that my approach (= the one of yours) is the better, safer and more rewarding one, in long term. Nice video - and ride safe 🙂

This is one of the best explanations I have seen why you should stay in the middle, because of having more options. I have to regret that I stay much of the time on the right. Even if I have an open space. On the other hand staying to the right has saved my life several times while driving around blind corners as the roads in Germany, and in Europe in general, are very tight sometimes.
