Fatal overdoses linked to the synthetic opioid fentanyl have been steadily climbing in the United States. "CBS Evening News" managing editor and anchor Norah O'Donnell reports on how teens are buying the drug on social media. Then Desilynn Smith, the clinical supervisor with Gateway to Change rehabilitation center, joins CBS News' Vladimir Duthiers to discuss the loss of her husband to a fentanyl overdose and her work to prevent drug-related deaths in her community.

Don't think people will wake up. I've watched the national geographic documentary on the cartels and fentanyl. I've also watched interviews from south America about fentanyl. They don't sell fentanyl to their own people, the cartels say the demand to send fentanyl into the US is high, "because it kills Americans". Cartels say they receive most of the fentanyl from China.

I’ve been sick for 11 years and have never sought out drugs on the street and I’ve been on opiates for most of that time. Not every doctor or patient is a statistic-some people are truly only able to live because of pain medication. Those who are on monitored treatment and use their medication properly don’t get “high” because their system is used to the medication. There’s so many things that are said that are damaging to people who need medication and doctors have lost control because of regulations. There’s always those who ruin it for the masses and it’s unfair. For those in end of life care, they have to fight to get meds and it’s not right. The statement that no one sees you or pays attention to you when you work in education or trying to help those in addiction-well there’s many of us who feel the same and we actually need the medical help. It’s a nasty cycle

There needs to be SOME beginning to differentiate between the opioids because all to often now, doctors are fearful to give ANY pain meds out and patients are suffering!!! I have friends with stories on both sides of the isle and it would be nice if just for once there was an actual account of doctors who cut off patients who LEGITIMATELY needed some sort of pain meds yet had no where to get help! This story is getting old with any accountability on the part of doctors and legislation when people have abandoned care! Why do you think many of these people go to the streets??? Is this not obvious for a great many of the situations out there? Tell the FULL story and see who is actaully impacted once the FULL truth is out there among those who have no idea! There will ALWAYS be those who abuse! There will always be those who truly need pain medicine! Maybe there needs to be a new format to determine the difference between the two!!! It is very scary that fentanyl can be mixed and made to look like prescription drugs and/or candy! This should also become something that is discussed in schools a great deal!

This is true, everything you wrote. I no longer want to hear people blaming drs. for their or their loved one's adddictions. The days for "pin the blame on the doctor" are long gone. It is tragic losing people to addiction and overdoses, but it is also tragic to "live" with debilitating, under-medicated pain because doctors are afraid to administer adequate treatment.

My husband who had taken narcotics for over 20 years due to oilfield accidents and back surgeries, was cut off by his doctor for a UA positive for weed. My husband had gotten down to 135 lbs from almost 200 lbs, couldn't eat properly, couldn't sleep, but managed to make it to work. My husband, once he made the decision to smoke, or die, he never looked back, even knowing he would surely get cut off. Luckily, he went through the withdrawals and all for about 9 months, but he is clean today. These doctors are a mess! I have chronic pain as well, so I know what it is to depend on pain relief. If you force a pain patient to get off their pain meds and you don't think they may seek their pain relief illegally, you are likely mistaken. Once they write you off...that don't GAF!!!

Doctors would throw dozens of medications at you for pain. Sometimes the work sometimes they don't. Sometimes it gives you terrible side effects. What's disgusting though is that once a person is prescribed a narcotic, right away all fingers point at you as a drug addict. There's people who suffer from unbearable pain but dare they start taking a strong medication to have some peace in their life. It's always those who have no clue what another person goes through to be the first to say, oh they need to be educated or they should find alternatives. We live up to 100 years and some people has suffered for 40 to 60 years. Why should people spend their short life looking for alternatives while those who don't suffer from pain lives a happy pain free life. The audacity.

Even marijuana from a street connection, many are including fentanyl inside of it now of days without a customers knowledge. Yes I agree to only utilize scripts for that person from a legit pharmacy of choice and or well respected marijuana dispensaries for marijuana products. It is one way as you mentioned to keep these items and scripts only taken by the individual. I am prescribed both oxy 10.5 and dilladid 8 mg. For my ongoing surgeries on my right foot. Prior to Christmas, our home was burglarized for the Christmas presents and new heaters for our home only to discover that my entire script of dilladid was also stolen during the burglary while we were out to my foot doctor. As a result with my entire script stolen, I felt it was needed to notify law enforcement (not for a new script at all as I rationed out my oxys to get me by the entire month.) The reason why I felt the need to notify law enforcement was for the factor, they have stolen my entire bottle with my full name and script information. My reasoning for calling law enforcement was to report all this Incase somebody decided to mix fentanyl into the dilladid 8 mg and someone died as a result of it. I did not want my name associated with any death as a result. I managed to pull through the entire month on a small fraction of my oxy in comparison to how much the doctor wanted me to take. I myself refuse to buy from the streets due to the fentanyl out there today and ISO which was found in my small city of residency. ISO is 120% stronger than normal fentanyl that narcan can not even stop unfortunately leading to more deaths locally now. It is basically a lower fentanyl class than carfentanyl which is 50% or more powerful than average fentanyl which is even more scary and would cause more deaths than what narcan can actually do for the public.

There's no such thing as "private doctors" that just give you what yo want. Every state in this country has prescription monitoring that show how physicians prescribe narcotics and to who. No physician would risk a license for overprescribing narcotics today. These policies have been around for a decade now and counting.
@warrinbang1191
@warrinbang1191 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Drugs are tightly regulated in America. But when medication is required those with a personal physician will have more input as to which drug they receive. Moreover, they have greater access to a prescription for that drug. Doctors, like anyone else, know how to work around the rules governing their profession.
@SirEnzo371
@SirEnzo371 Жыл бұрын
@@warrinbang1191 That makes no sense. There are no "personal" physicians that'll give you what you want just because you ask for it, ESPECIALLY narcotics. It doesn't work that way in America. There are licensing and medical boards that constantly monitor these things and you don't get your medication from your physician, you get them from the pharmacist. America of today isn't America of the 1970's. Narcotics specifically are heavily monitored by each state, no one will risk their license as a physician to give someone their fix. It wouldn't make sense. Pharmacists on the other hand....

That's an outdated excuse, i.e, a dr's prescribing habits causing a person's ultimate fentanyl addiction. Doctors nowadays are generally very cautious in writing prescriptions for opiates. The truth is this: those who are hooked on fentanyl in 2022 are there because they chose to be. They either started with weed and/or other street drugs before deciding to jump over to the hard stuff, OR they had been using heroin and then went to fentanyl because heroin was not available or was actually fentanyl being sold as "heroin." Not many of these addicts became addicted after receiving legitimate scripts from their doctors, and if they did start with a legitimate dr's prescription, I wld bet it was not within the last several years or so. Remember Oxycontin and what happened after that? Doctors pretty much shuttered shop, many of them refusing to prescribe narcotics to even those in acute pain ( which is a tragedy in itself).

Do you think that's gonna stop these kids or do a good? No, these people started on drugs that were raised by somebody. It starts at home, it starts with the way that raise and starts with the way they're talked to the way they're treated. And why I say that I work with kids. That was in the system and the one thing that I found most of the kids that had problems with the pens. Not the kids, the parents you can't talk to your kid when he feels like it's 2 inches tall, you can't treat your child like he doesn't exist, it can't code a work, come home and not even speak, and have any dinner at the table, everybody just goes in there. Own room like invisible goes, there's so many things that go on in these homes, and then you're wondering why these kids do drugs. Not all these drugs comes from Mexico. Those people that's making these drug writer in the United States and thousands of them, not they don't talk about those people. Or you keep talking about the ones. That Mexico and China and the drugs will still be. In this country, because it'll be coming from car occasion, people making the jobs themselves and the kids making the drugs selling them themselves and doing the drugs. That's just how it is, the only thing you could do with kids like this, you would have to put him in a school locked down, stay there at 24 7 with doctors with therapist. And they couldn't leave where they had to live there until they were 18. And then hope maybe they would be well enough to function in society. But the lead among the streets and needs to alter with their parents😊

I cant believe I didn't know that's what is going on. I pray to GOD people who like to party with Boy, Girl or pills would give up, come to our SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST and pray for help in their lives and get clean forever. Life is much better without it. USA blames Mexico but your own people is the one is passing the drugs. Parents we suppose to show the kids not to use any drugs. If the parents use drugs the kids will use it. If there is no parental guidance then again kids will use drugs. So whose fault is it? It’s the people who buys it and use it.

First, sure just over half the fentanyl coming into the country does come across into America. Second, China is successfully able to ship the other half into both directly into America and Canada where dealers here are mixing it with anything from asprin, cocaine and meth to name a few, so please tell me how it is possible to secure just the Mexican border and not have this problem in north America alone in both America and Canada regarding the other half of all fentanyl crossing in? Three, is America going to secure the border from Canada and stop all china's shipments from entering into America itself all while closing the southern Mexico border? Five, this problem is never going to go away unless people start realizing what I stated above while taking further ongoing actions. I do thank you for your faith in our Lord, savior holy Spirit and king of kings. Please for you and your family have a very happy and safe new year, God bless.
