Reminds me of when my friend gave his Best Man's speech, who at the point he meant to propose a toast to the bridesmaids, made a slight freudian slip and instead proposed a toast to the barmaids. To be fair to him we all agreed the barmaids were much better looking!

If you see the whole thing, including the speech the other people gave, (the bride's father's speech is of course the last one), the clever thing about it is that you don't notice that no one has named the groom until the bride's father does so; so when he's talking about Martin you actually think he is talking about the groom (until of course Atkinson dispels the illusion by bringing Gerald into it).

I was fortunate enough to watch Rowan Atkinson perform this years ago in Sydney (long before his Black Adder days and Mr. Bean) where he delivered all three components of the wedding speeches - but the father of the bride part is definitely the best. One of the funniest components to the live performance came towards the end of intermission, where he appeared amongst the audience as an irate heckler delivering a stinging rebuke of Atkinson's performance and demanding for his money back.

like you we had the joy of seeing him live on stage here in Christchurch years ago .two words bloody brilliant!he also did the mime sketch putting on his swimming togs on the beach.his rubber band gyrations of his lega and facial expressions -priceless.

Nobody can deliver venom with hilarity quite the same way as Rowan. Black Adder FTW in that capacity as well. I miss his snarky days. Now all he does is Mr. Bean and Bean-like characters.

It is a double edged sword as it can be. Mr. Bean brought him international recognition and fame. And though, of course, i like and love this role, it is but one side of the medallion. Hopefully many people will look for more of the man, that brought them, Mr. Bean and appreciate and love him even more. As for Mr. Atkinson, i wish him happiness and health for his time on earth, as he gifted millions of people a good time. Thankfully he made a good buck from it as well, so i don't have to ask for his banking details. 😉

In the original sketch he used a different word from "prick". I think it was changed because of protests either by or on behalf of people with cerebral palsy (I'll let you guess what the word was). Sensibilities were different then.

I typically hate stand-up comedy, but Rowan Atkinson's is hilarious. He makes it more like a one-man sketch, rather than saying stupid things and laughing at his own jokes.

So true. Those of us who know him from Not The Nine O'Clock News and even earlier (and, of course, the Secret Policeman's Balls) saw him when he was so much funnier than Mr Bean or Johnny English.
