Father Rupert Mayer (Oliver Gruber) served in World War I and was awarded the Iron Cross dedicating his life to the Eastern Front, where his leg was taken from him during battle. Father Mayer spent many years during World War II preaching sermons against the powers to be, the Third Reich. Father Mayer is warned to stop preaching his anti-Nazi sermons and ends up in prison three times, where he suffered under the Nazi regime. Father Mayer gets released by the spiritual and mental help of a fellow Jewish prisoner (Michael Mendl) and Father Mayer vows to never stop preaching sermons against Nazi Germany and ends up in Sachsenhausen concentration camp as a result of his relentless courageous exertion for human rights.

(1) Revelations 8 verses 10 and 11 : And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as if it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter. (2) Chernobyl is the Ukranian word for Wormwood. That should tell you how far down the path we have come already.

In Munich there is a small chapel downstairs with father Rupert ś picture and bust. Many people are praying to him and begging for help. If you are ever going to visit Munich you can perhaps see the place. My mother in law lived in Munich and she always used praying to Father Rupert and told me he often helped her!

Inspiring movie about the only man to call Hitler a beast and the devil in Munich during public sermons and still manage to survive the Nazis despite being tortured and sent to a concentration camp. Rupert Meyer was a priest of unshakable faith.

Je suis française et je peux vous dire que dans mon village quelques soldats ayant fait la guerre 14 18 ont été sauvés par des soldats allemands. La seconde à été beaucoup moins drôle . Dans les soldats de petites classes certains étaient humains mais accompagnés de gradés ils tuaient sans discussion . Maintenant ce n’ est que du passé il faut avancer et ce dans l’ espoir que les peuples soient uni .

There were Germans who opposed the Reich, with courage like Father Meyer, and if this film makes Catholics feel less guilty, it is a false balm. The vast majority of Priests, Catholics, Presbyterians, and all the other Christian religious leaders and Germans watched a people be sacrificed, who they unconsciously, if not consciously, had been taught were responsible for the the death of G-d. It's a shame this masterpiece is not made on a an A grade budget. The acting and actors are absolutely phenomenal. Darryl Hannah is a gem as is Oliver Gruber ❤️❤️❤️ this is so moving and strong. The courage and faith of Father Mayer inspired many and his love for all people at a time of such racist hatred was brave, courageous and blessed by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who came to earth a lowly Jewish Carpenter. I loved this movie about a priest ive never been taught about. I dont care if they used the wrong rifle in WW1 scenes, i didnt know the difference nor many of the other things peoplecare complaining about. I just thank you so much for this movie about a holy msn i never knew. Thank you.

@@sranney1 They were responsible for WWII but not WWI. The blame goes to Austria-Hungary, and Czarist Russia. Then France, Germany and England. You should look it up.

The joke in Ireland before you go to Germany or meet Germans, ' don't mention the war, whatever you do!!' lol On a more serious note, I have worked in Germany and met some lovely men and women there. That was in 2005 and we are friends, to this day. Thank you for uploading this movie.

What a shame such a man didn't rate a better movie. Nazis with hair over the collar, some bad acting and a very slow moving film are not what he deserved. The boy he prayed with was real- Franz was 11 at the time, and survived the war to live a long life as the Prince of Bavaria. TY for the movie.
