Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to repair this 2011 Core i7 Apple MacBook Pro A1278. It was working fine, but now doesn't power up. It does charge fine though. Can it work again?
The software seen in this video was made by Paul Daniels pldaniels.com/flexbv
You can do some research on it and decide if it would be useful to you.

FlexBV Timely Tip #2; you can *right click* on any part/pin and the search option will come up there as well ( rather than having to go to the right column to select [PDF] ). In fairness, I need to write a manual / guide, as well as some videos. Thank you again.

Thank you Paul, just tried it, very nice time saving tip, and also right click on the schematic to bring up the component in Boardview. As you can tell I haven't used it much but I do have a few MacBook's here to look at, so hopefully I can get to grips with it more over the next month or 2. The poor bugger needs a Microscope to make his life much easier and save himself time. Not sure if he had a magnifying glass but if he used nothing he did a reasonable job with the naked eye. Good to see him fix the laptop and not throw it out like many others would have done.

Amazing job, Vince! Those schematics look super helpful! I used to scrape off the enamel on the 0.1mm wire but someone told me that you don't need to, and ever since I just use the wire as is. The hot solder and the iron burn away the enamel coating anyway, and it saves a few seconds of scraping! 👍

@@StezStixFix I don't think you are wrong at all. Really the only concern is the size of the diameter of the wire for clearance/tolerance with surrounding components. Although wire, by it's vary nature, creates resistance itself in a circuit based of the diameter and length of the core. So this could have an affect on overall resistance in a circuit. Rule of thumb is the shorter the run the better. Given the type of repairs Vince and you accomplish should never be an issue. Just ensure the wires are shielded and not ran immediately beside or across any inductors. Full disclaimer though, "what do I know though 😂". I know I'm never the smartest guy in the comments.

I appreciate you being considerate of the length of the video there's a few channels I watch that seem to be okay with putting out 2-3 hour long gaming reviews or something similar and I simply don't have the time to watch something like that especially when multiple channels do it or something similar

I think my favorite part of your repair videos is your excitement when it works. You have way better skills than I do. I can build PCs but rarely ever attempt board level repair. WTG Vince

Everyone starts somewhere. When Vince started board level repair he had no skills either. Just a willingness to screw it up and learn from his mistakes. The level of skill you see now is roughly three or so years of practice, practice, practice.

Everyone is capable of watching a feature-length fix it video! 1 thing you could do to improve the video experience is set chapters on your videos. Beyond that, once you have chapters, people can just pause the video and come back later, it's what I will often do on videos that exceed 3hrs.

Really great work! You even had me holding my breath when the hot air was on those teeny resistors! Such super tiny stuff. I can't believe how far you have come in 2 years. Would you have believed back then if someone said you'd be fixing intricate soldering jobs on Macbooks in a couple of years?! Love your videos.

Hi! I have a macbook pro mid 2012, i use it only for safari. for weeks it works fine until it freezes and won't unblock even waiting for days. same when i have to turn it on, for weeks i turn it on and off, until a day i turn it on and it gets forever stuck on the loading bar. i do the SOS on the hard disk, and mostly of the times it has no errors. all i can do is restore factory it and reinstall the OS. can you please tell me where is the problem? is it just the RAM problem? so i buy a new RAM and everything should be fine?

I will commend you Vince for buying Paul;s software, he is running a project to collecting diode readings from as many boards (Primarily Macs). He is always developing the software as well, you should if not already done so, watch some of his video's.

i just can say that Louis Rossmann is a kind of guru fixing mac books, but you are asome fixing any device, you take the risk using parts from a good working device to find the problem and fix it, great job. best regards.

Hiya! it's been a while since I've watched your videos. I remember buying an ethernet wire from you a few years ago and I just wanted to say thanks again. That wire alone fixed the speeds I was receiving because the one the ISP gave were damaged. Not to mention the build quality of the wire was strong. So thanks again and hope you are well :)

Vince, congratulations on another great video. If you get a chance can you check if normal soldering removes the enamel coating on your wire I.e. no need to scrape it. I appreciate some wire does require it but lately it hasn’t been a problem. Keep up the great work 👍😀

Damn good soldering job Vince! Next time you work on something this crazy small, can you setup a second camera zoomed back normally showing how small the board is (just for a shot here or there to contrast)? I'd be interesting to see the size perspective.

i watch your amplifier repair videos and have a request to ask you. can you make a video on basics of how to repair amplifiers based on amplifier class. like which components are usually found in class D amplifier and how and why they're arranged in specific pattern.

A cool tip for not losing tiny components that I got from watching the NorthridgeFix channel. Don't desolder the component completely just move it across so that its still attached to one of the pads and not the other. Then you can do your tests etc and when you are done you just move it back into position onto both pads.

Hey Vince, great fix well done! I do a fair bit of tinkering myself off camera, and have just invested in an AmScope SM-4B microscope and I can honestly say it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made. I can’t recommend it enough. Being able to see what you’re doing I’d say is the most important part. Thanks for the content.

Vince, when a trace comes away from the circuitboard, or breaks then you should do the repair, but then get a heat sensor out to check the repair before masking it, as a trace that comes loose usually has a heat issue, and the only things to create heat is either by soldering iron, or heat gun, or a short circuit. after 5-10 minutes of operation and no excess heat coming from the repair, then mask it, otherwise you will just move the problem else where if it is a short circuit.

Few days ago mine MB Pro 2011 (same as syours) is nearly to die, probably SMC chip has died, it’s startup, but there is no any system responsability.

Vince is that a crack in the chip that is near the screen conector?, obviusly it works fine but it may fail if there is a crack in the edge of the chip

Hi don’t suppose anyone can help? My sons switch lite stopped working, I’ve replaced the right board and cable and it’s all working again bar the plus and minus buttons and the on off cable? I’ve ordered a replacement on off cable but would this not working affect the plus and minus buttons? I can’t find anything on Google and I’m going insane lol. Help

That one has a little thin plastic cover on it, the cover has the corner broken but the wires are still intact underneath 👍
