This is the exact finish I've been thinking about for my concrete floor. I live in social housing and it's very depressing with bare chipped concrete and the landlords isn't about to do anything about it. I can't wait to see their faces when they see me new:'laminate' flooring. I haven't tried it yet but with these clear instructions I'm sure I will do a good job I'll let you know how it goes thank you for the instructions.

What I learned in art class is when you are painting long brush strokes in any form, try to go up&down because the arm naturally moves in an arch swing. If you must go side to side, using a long board to set your brush against or resting your wrist on it will give you long even side to side lines. This work is amazing, but I know I could not have gotten those nice strokes you have there. Great work. Going to do a coffee table with 5 -10x10x5 lumber blocks with a white wash. What I like cost $1600 so going DIY with it. I will use this method as it's the best I've seen yet. Thank yu for sharing.

Can you please elaborate on what you said about going from side to side for straight lines?

Adding to my previous comment, I have been doing a technique very similar to this and it’s been killing my arms and my lines aren’t straight enough

Fantastic video. I’m looking at going for a similar effect but with more of a white finish with pale grey grain. Could you tell me if putting a thicker final coat produce that effect? Thanks

Yes, or you could use lighter base and dark colors.

@PrettyHandyGirl
@PrettyHandyGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+laura gilbert You'd have to paint the surface with a light color first. You might need to primer. But, you could ask your paint department to tint your primer to match that background color.

On your web page i saw you did a darker color the same method on posterboard for photo backdrops. Im trying to create a distressed tobacco faux woodgrain look just like that on our dining room table. Could you list the colors and ratios you used? Looks great!!
@PrettyHandyGirl

I used the same colors on both the posterboard (for trying out the palette) and the table. It's just the lighting that looks different. I suggest you use the colors I recommended and play with them until you achieve the desired effect.

Hey, Brittany! I have a question! How do you apply faux wood grain on pieces that have more intricate details?
@PrettyHandyGirl
@PrettyHandyGirl 5 жыл бұрын
That might be tough to do. The faux woodgrain tool needs a smooth surface.

I have the gaining tool but haven't tried it yet. Not sure what color combinations to use for a darker wood color. Also lot of the videos say to use glaze. Do I have to use glaze or can I just use paint over the paint?
@PrettyHandyGirl
@PrettyHandyGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Go ahead and test it out. I choose to use the glaze because it shows the texture from the previous color making it look more realistic.

I am taking dark pantry doors and want to make them darker, and taking polyurethane pilasters and want to make them match - along with all the trim work and such. Is this a good method for that?
@PrettyHandyGirl
@PrettyHandyGirl 7 жыл бұрын
You'll have to play with the paint colors. I'd suggest painting them both the same base color to get them the same.

What does she add to paint glaze ? Is that varnish or clear coat ?
@PrettyHandyGirl
@PrettyHandyGirl 7 жыл бұрын
I add clear glaze to regular latex paint to create a colored glaze. If you are refinishing a table top you will want to protect with a polyurethane or polycrylic after faux finishing.

I have a good quality faux wood cherry red laminate floor . Excellently laid flooring but the colour is outdated . I want to know can I paint the driftwood colour on my flooring and seal it ? The floor looks like an engineered hardwood it’s ashamed to tear it out . P,ease help suggest-what I can do.

Cathy, you can, but it will eventually scratch. Unfortunately floors put up with the toughest conditions.

Britney have you researched Rust Oleum Home apparently it is a great product it was called Rock Solid before . I was thinking if I could do base coat in a brownish to cover red laminate and then a chalk paint effect with the tool wood grain and put a chalk paint to make driftwood effect ? Then apply their floor coating by Rust Oleum? I guess you can see I am researching all options and your expertise would be one I trust.
