Most brake jobs I’ve seen on here include using brake grease on the pads where they slide along the caliper as well as lightly grease the back side of the pads . Also, if that had been sitting for 5 years, I personally would have removed the guide pins, thoroughly cleaned and regreased them, making sure to not get grease on the tips, and made sure the seals were still in good shape. Otherwise awesome vid. I especially like ones like these with a clear list of tools needed and torque specs at the end. Well done.

How can the pistons be that tight did they move at all? wouldn't that have been a time to rebuild the calipers as well ?

Very clear video - I could have done with watching this before I did my mk4 brake discs last weekend. One question - other guides suggest that when you wind back the pistons you should open the brake fluid reservoir cap so the displaced brake fluid has somewhere to go (and ensure it doesn't overflow) - or even better open the caliper bleed screw, so that the displaced fluid doesn't go back through the ABS module. You didn't suggest it in the video, but do you advise this too?

Those are certainly both great notes and something we try to mention for most brake job DIYs. The first step should always be to open the reservoir, and if over full remove some of the fluid to account for the piston travel. A great alternative is to push the fluid out of the bleeder as you mentioned.

You should not let the caliper hang from the hose. Use a strap or bungee cord to hold it up.

I need to get the same calipers and brackets for this car in this video. I have been researching and looking everywhere but can’t find the right ones that fit my car. Would you have any suggestions for me?

question: I recently swapped all the brake hardware from a newer mk4 jetta to my 99.5 mk4 jetta, but when I went to install the e-brake cable, I noticed that the cable ends did not fit the newer style e-brake lever at the caliper. so i used the old lever from my original set. after some time, I purchased new cables with the description of "Older" MK4 models, but they don't seem to work as well. I have adjusted many times the tension on the e-brake handle with the same results: not enough pad and rotor contact to keep the car in place in my driveway. Any hints as to what I might have done wrong here? should i go back with the lever that was originally on the swapped calipers? I appreciate any feedback!

Would’ve stuck a wrench on that nut that was on the retraction tool instead of adding a “cheater bar”. Looks like you bent that lever
