Bending Steel With Water: Inside a Hydrolocked Porsche Engine

►The Porsche Cayenne Turbo is great for many things, including towing boats, taking the kids to school, beating WRXs at highway pulls, and climbing over rough terrain. However, their V8 engines aren't impervious to damage, as our Creative Director Ben Marouski found out in the Colorado wilderness. While traversing a river crossing, his 957 Cayenne Turbo ingested water, causing it to hydro-lock and die. While Ben and his rescuers were briefly able to get the Cayenne running again, the engine's fate was already sealed.
You can watch all of the action with that Cayenne, from its assembly as an overlander to its demise and eventual rebuild in another video series, but today, it's all about looking at the carnage caused by the water. As we know, water in the cylinder of a running engine is catastrophic, and inside this Porsche M48.51 V8, that's all on display. So sit down, grab a snack, and watch along as Ben and Event Director/Cayenne Expert Nate Brown tear down the once-beating heart of a 957 Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

I once inspected a four cylinder engine from a Kia sedan. The guy picked it up from a service, drove out and shortly after drove through a "puddle". Ingested water, stalled, engine locked up. Here's where it gets interesting... he had offered some of the workshop staff a ride because of the rain and in a moment mental failure, they helped him push start the car. He drove home, had the good sense to remove the airfilter and let it drip dry. The next day he simply carried on using the car until "that" moment when the damaged rod gave up and tore the engine apart. What came out of that engine was multiple bent rods, with the broken one having bent well past 60⁰. Somehow the engine kept turning. Somehow this guy managed to ignore his engine light, the noise, the misfiring, the soaking wet airfilter...

It's foolish to add insult to injury, I'm sure this man has regrets. At least he's owned up to his mistakes and is willing to share his experience and this great teardown video of a hydro locked motor. Most people would shy away from something like what he's done, because of pride. Great video guys!

Oh wow! Hope I never have to get that deep into my engine! Just finished with replacing the CV axle on my '09 GTS - lessons learned : (1) if doing a CV axle, consider going all the way and replacing upper and lower control arms - you get new bushings, ball joints, and boots; and don't care if you damage anything during removal - so it ends up being much easier and faster, (2) if not replacing ball joints, be aware that new boots that match the old ones are hard to find, so take a lot of care, (3) if you have to tap on the stud to separate the ball joints, don't forget to leave the nut on the end of the stud to protect the threads - or be prepared to spend a lot of time with a thread chaser and/or thread file to repair the threads, (4) If you will be taking a long time, get a battery keeper - a dead battery is a pain, as the power locks and power seats won't work - and you need them to open the back hatch or to access the battery under the driver's seat, (5) note that an after market CV axle may have a different sized axle nut than the original - new one was larger then my largest socket, which fit my old axle nut, (6) brake shield bolts are the same diameter and threads as the bolt that goes in the brake pin - but not the same length, and one has a flared head - don't mix them up.

Lotta good notes there Johnathon, the axle is a straightforward job on this car but as you mentioned there are some things that can certainly make it easier/more worth your while when unassembling and reassembling.

This whole thin can be avoided by stopping before the water crossing, lifting the hood / bonnet and looking at where the air intake is. If its low, stop. If the air-filter box is high up just pull the lid off that for the crossing and stick a cloth in the low down intake. If you can't get the intake up high then turn the engine off and get a tow across and save yourself $10,000. Its been the fashion to fit cool air intakes low for power but in the real world with floods they are just rob-benders.

Another great video by FCP and crew. I'm glad you touched on the glued in coolant barb. I had mine pop off when I was passing someone on the highway and I was 2.5 hours from home. Luckily a small indy mechanic down the street was able to push the barb back into the crossover pipe and I'm like 3 months strong lol. I plan on slathering it with JbWeld marine or something soon because I need to be able to romp on it with winter coming soon.

The way the timing chain was designed is great! You know that these engineers who designed it wanted to make sure that it will be happy for a long time. Seeing an Audi as a kid was blissful but seeing a teardown of the Audi V8’s turned me off. Further engineering designs turned me off even further. It is what it is. Great video!

I may have said this in a video a few years ago, but Sunex makes a very nice drip pan that fits on the long leg of an engine stand. Sunex 8300DP Oil Drip Pan. Theirs is built specifically for their geared engine stand, but I suspect it works on many. Others like Jaz Products 720-000-01. (A geared engine stand is a wonderful thing, too.)

Did any body else get super confused when he started talking about the timing chain, how at first he called it a dual chain setup and how most newer engines use a “singer” chain setup, then proceeds to say it only has one chain (which is clear when you look at it even from a video). The amout of time and effort that goes into this video you would think they would at least try and be accurate with what they say

When I was in high school back in the early 1990s I had a 1989 Ford F-150 with the 300 cubic inch inline six and hydro locked it when crossing water on a camping trip. One of my connecting rods was bent and twisted worse than on this engine. The mechanic who tore it down said he’d never seen one that bad before. I wish I would’ve kept it as a reminder that water can’t be compressed and isn’t a good thing to introduce to your combustion chamber.😂

These are great engines until someone thinks they are a submarine and get water into the cylinders. Water and electronics don't mix very well, so why do some crazy people take them into water? Cars with electronic emergency brakes also can lock on so you can't get out of the water once you are in there. This is often seen with the newer Audi's.

Porsche makes famously reliable cars. 33 years of daily driving were very solid and free of the troubles I’d expect. I had normal cars before and a number of trucks, so I have a little perspective. Solid design and implementation. The Audi chain fest is a little painful to see. I’ve worked on all my cars and I can say that coming across that design is a total buzzkill.
