►If your car is experiencing a loss of power, or (specifically for GTIs) CEL codes P2293 (fuel pressure regulator malfunction code) or P310B (fuel pressure below specification code), then you may need to replace your fuel filter and low-pressure fuel pump. Our Event Director, Nathan Brown, encountered these issues and decided to not only replace the fuel filter and low-pressure fuel pump, but the fuel control module as well to ensure the symptoms were eradicated.
What are the symptoms of a bad fuel pump on your Mk5 VW GTI?
-Low power/engine sputtering
-Decreased gas mileage
-Low performance at high ambient temperatures
-Inconsistent throttle/acceleration
-Engine won't start/fire

We'll try to get Nathan back out in the driveway soon! Unfortunately, the cam chain tensioner was just replaced on this car back in September, but we'll work on finding another needy candidate in the FCP Euro employee fleet to capture that DIY.

Thank you for the good cámara focus on the fuel filter clips. I saw a video last week and did not see the clips. I forced and ripped off the ends of the old filter and now its a mess, but it works.

Would a symptom of a bad fuel pump be a the smell of fuel upon start up? Cause I get a hint of fuel when I start my car. Also would you guys happen to have a video on MAF sensors, cause I got codes 0201, 0171, 0068. Thanks for this awesome content I will be changing my fuel pump

I have code 00771 instead, which apparently may mean a dirty connector to the float. Can I use this video to just pull the whole pump out, then detach the float, open up the slider-box it's connected to .. and clean the box inside? Or is it not good to reuse the pump + seal?

I have a 2.5l and it jolts at high rpms. Sometimes once and other times alot. But after the jolt it takes off like a rocket ship. I cant figure out whats wrong. Any suggestions?

Hello. Great video. Where did you put the axle stand when you lifted the rear of the car for the fuel filter? I'm struggling to find a safe spot and my jack takes up the width of the pinch section. Thanks

Thanks for the video- just the information I needed to sort my FSI Audi direct injection motor (returnless as the regulator would have been in the tank) into a 986 Boxster. The Boxster is return off the fuel rail, so switching to this filter will give a simpler way to regulate and return whilst using the existing pump in the tank. I looked at changing to the 997.2 pump (with inbuilt regulator in tank), as a costly alternative. Cheers

I have a question about a friends 2013 Jetta, gas 2.5, she's had a lot of fuel delivery issues. I have personally changed the fuel pump twice, they've had to change the fuel pump relay (the bitch one way up top corner of under dash fuse box) But I've recently noticed something after watching these videos. It looks like at some point someone has changed the plug to the top of the fuel pump (spliced and shrink tubed) but I see no control module at all. Are all the gas variations of these supposed to have that right next to the fuel pump? When it runs it runs good, but it has left them stranded a couple times. I don't feel as if the fuel pump nor those relays should have to be changed that often. Anyone have an answer?

Thank you for the video! I've got two questions: 1) looks like your airbag indicator light is on. Mine, too. What I can do to resolve that? and 2) your center gauge screen looks mighty bright and nice for a MK5 at 188k miles. Mine is dim and I can't see the odometer reading and other parts of the screen. Is there anything I can do to resolve this? Thanks in advance!

Ayo I own the same car and mines at 198k all bright and dandy. Either you don’t realize you have a brightness KNOB slightly to the right of your Headlight and Fogkifht knob ORRRR a power issue via battery. But I’m hoping you don’t know about the knob that turns your brightness up and down. Also at night it’s lowkey automatic, it’ll dim itself if you have it set to dim.

@@musicaljay4453 I am aware of the brightness adjuster next to the headlight switch. That isn't what I am referring to. At night, the center screen is fine. But during the daytime, parts of the screen are unreadable, like the odometer area.

Can somebody help?? I replaced the fuel filter on mine and primed the car and the car wont even crank when i turn the key. I dont know what i did wrong, i know youre suppose to prime the car before starting and i did that but i cant even get a crank. I turn the key as if im starting the car regularly and get no crank at all.

Hey! I have a faulty fuel sender. I’m considering changing the whole pump but as I’m unsure how much fuel I have in the car. How would I find this out? Or would I have to take the fuel out before removing the pump. Don’t want fuel to spray everywhere!

Hi Jay, more than likely you will need to remove the pump to visually see the level inside the tank. Or you could drive it till empty...😅

Thanks! Yes this process is the same on all FSI and TSI Mk5/6/7 vehicles, as well as most other VW models from 2006 and up. Specific parts may change depending on the exact model, but the steps will be identical.

Just changed out everything you did in this video for my Mk6 R and for some reason now my fuel guage doesn't work 🤔🤔 can't seem to figure it out. Had a spare controller so I swapped it out thinking it was that. Didn't do the trick. Swapped the pump again and didn't do the trick either... not sure what else it could be ... Any thoughts?

@@daanvaneek5549 the solution I found was to ground off the outside temperature sensor. It's behind the front bumper. The theory behind it is the 2 gauges in the cluster are connected someway inside the cluster, so grounding out the outside temp sensor it forces the fuel level sensor to work. How much different would all this be for a vw cc 3.6? I’m presuming it’s pretty much the same?

Yup, that is correct. The process for the Passat 3.6 VR6 is going to be more or less the same, with the exception of the specific parts, and the fuel filter. On the Passat 3.6 the fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump and is not a separate unit like it is on this GTI.

Did this module actually fix the fuel cuts for anyone or is just more money thrown into a black hole? I got that same VDO pump brand new last week and it still gets cuts and those errors once driven for 40+ min. It's -2C outside here now so I can't even think what will happen in the 30C+ summertime. In the US I believe they relocated that controller to another place to get rid of the heat from being squashed under the backseat and carpet. I'm thinking of actually extending the wires to move that bastard to the trunk and put a a regular fatty PC heatsink on it, not that joke they use.

So you are not sure what is the fault and thus you replace everything. Maybe get the car to a real mechanic ? LOL

I data-logged the car for multiple sessions and was unable to replicate the issue, so taking it to a mechanic wouldn't have gained any knowledge unfortunately, it just would have cost diagnostic labor. Knowing the codes, knowing the fuel filter was due to be replaced, and knowing the LPFP and control module hadn't been touched in the time I owned the car, I decided to replace all three components as I couldn't risk the problem popping back up when I was on track. I wouldn't do that for some problems, but for this issue which is very specific and happens under certain conditions and not others, it proved to be the right move.
