The term, "Satellite" means that it was a "satellite" of the long-gone FDNY Super Pumper System. Even though the Super Pumper itself was disposed of years ago, the name stuck. In this video, they were not responding to a local fire, but a greater alarm fire usually geographically far away. Unlike when the Super Pumper was around, the Satellite is seldom used for it's original function...that being a heavy-caliber stream supplied with large-diameter hose (LDH). Today it's primarily used for its large hose bed of LDH,....if it's used at all. The Satellite itself is not a "company," but under the command of the officer, and manned by the firemen, of the Engine Company they're housed with, in this case, E. 72. The Engine Company has its own local responses for "routine" fires, but if they get tied up at one of those, there are other local companies that can come to their quarters and take the Satellite. There are 6 Satellites throughout NYC. They respond on all 2nd Alarms in their respective response areas.
@Stargazzer811
@Stargazzer811 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I understand why they aren't separate, but it would be interesting and perhaps more flexible if they were. Yes that would mean extra staff but if the Engine goes out on a call and the Sat is needed for another call with no other unit available to claim it, that kinda defeats the purpose of it not being staffed continuously. Thats just my 2 cents though.

Satellites are hold-overs from when FDNY had the Super Pumper back in the 1970s. The Super Pumper was a tractor-drawn, 7-stage (I think), DeLaval, 10 or 20,000 GPM pumper. The pump took up the whole trailer, so they built 5-6 Satellite Units which carried nothing but 5” hose and massive Stang deluge guns which the Super Pumper supplied. The Super Pumper was decommissioned long ago, and the Satellite Units are kept on as combo: Hose trucks/deluge gun trucks/Foam Supply trucks (which you can see the buckets of foam concentrate in this video really well. Since the Super Pumper is gone, I’m guessing certain FDNY Engines have high-pressure/high-flow pumps to supply the monitors on the Satellites. Engine 72 here seems to have a strange and complex pump panel on the officers side with many LDH inlets/outputs.
