CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Duke (Johnny Depp) gets a call to cover the Mint 400 race in Las Vegas, Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) invites himself along.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King) directed this colorful, stylized, pseudo-psychedelic $21-million adaptation of the 1971 Hunter S. Thompson classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey into the Heart of the American Dream, about stoned sportswriter Raoul Duke, Thompson's alter ego, on a wild drug-crazed road trip, a paranoid plummet into the belly of the beast, with his pal, lawyer Oscar Zeta Acosta. Originally serialized in Rolling Stone (November 1971), the book catapulted Thompson headfirst toward the Kerouac-Mailer-Capote pantheon and jump-started the entire movement of "gonzo journalism." Carrying a suitcase of drugs, Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp with shaved pate) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) drive a red convertible across the Mojave from L.A. to Vegas, where Duke has an assignment to cover the Mint 400 desert motorcycle race. As the drugs kick in, Duke ventures into voiceover, filling in the blank spots and narrative gaps. "This is not a good town for psychedelic drugs," says Duke, but even so, they consume vast quantities, eventually escalating to ether. Duke notes that with ether "you can actually watch yourself behaving this terrible way, but you can't control it." The two trash their hotel room, and Gonzo goes back to L.A. Thinking the hotel room holocaust will lead to an arrest, Duke begins a drive back to L.A., but after an odd encounter with a highway patrolman (Gary Busey) and a telephone conversation with Gonzo, he returns to Vegas to cover the District Attorney Convention on Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in the glitzy Flamingo Hotel. This time the drugged-out duo trash their Flamingo room. The crazed carnival atmosphere segues into a carney casino, Bazooko's Circus, where a barker (Penn Jillette) spiels amid aerialists, clowns, and a rotating carousel bar. Gonzo worries over runaway teen Lucy (Christina Ricci), who paints portraits of Barbra Streisand. Soon the hallucinations begin: Duke sees Gonzo transmogrify into a demon with breasts on its back, and an acid vision of a Vegas bar features large legit lounge lizards (courtesy of monster makeup man Rob Bottin). Flashbacks depicting Duke's intro to the drug scene jump back to love-Haight relationships in San Francisco's Summer of Love. Cameos and guest stars include Mark Harmon, Cameron Diaz, Flea, Lyle Lovett, Harry Dean Stanton, Ellen Barkin, Tobey Maguire, and Hunter S. Thompson himself. The film features a Geffen Records soundtrack mixing rock of the period with Vegas lounge tunes. Over the years, various script adaptations came and went as did numerous talents; people connected with past efforts to film Thompson's book include Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and writer-director Alex Cox. Shown in competition at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.

Terry Gilliam, Johnny Depp, and Benicio del Toro all captured the novel perfectly. Depp not only read the script, along with del Toro, but they used method acting! Depp lived in Thompson's basement for weeks as research, and read all the drafts and what not, even shaved his head for the role! Next to Robert de Niro in "Raging Bull," this is the ultimate example of method acting. Plus, it's also where Depp found the manuscript of "The Rum Diary," and got it published, later made into a film.

tl;dr: Michael, not Uriel! I mean angel with flaming sword would rather be Michael than Uriel, the latter is rarely (if ever!) depicted holding sword or flame. The archangel you're looking for is Michael, holding a flaming sword and guarding the heavens. Michael is also the archangel who confrots Satan in the Book of Revelations (Whereas, it should be noted that the Revelations are nothing more than insane ramblings -at least to me- and are therefore ignored by me). Make of that what you will In Catholicism Michael follows his four tasks of (1) leading the army of God, (as depicted in the Book of Revalations) (2) the angel of death (as well as giving the soon-to-be dead a last chance of redemption) (3) evaluating the worth of the souls (whereas, since the here portraied angel doesnt have a scale on him, this can almost certainly be excluded) (4) and lastly, as the guardian of the church as well as all churches (as in the actual buildings). i just wanted to share some info or whatever

I’m toasty writing this but for anyone interested. The angel with the flaming sword represents Uriel, who was placed by God at the Gates of Paradise after Adam and Eve (The two main characters) are banished from it. That’s why the angel isn’t there when they enter the car but when they leave.

Benicio Del Toro is unbelievable. I mean, Johnny Depp is obviously also pretty good but Del Toro totally steals the show here. I mean, compare this here to his character in "The Usual Suspects" or "Traffic" or even "Sicario". Its like he is a completely different person, not only his look but also how he talks, how he walks, how he laughs, the gestures, the little weird mannerisms - everything is different here. There are not many actors who can pull this off. Most actors act of course differently on different characters - they act more or less confident, speak with different accents etc but still keep their typical mannerisms. Benicio Del Toro is one of the few actors who is able to change literally everything in his appaerance. He is on the same level as Edward Norton, Kevin Spacey, Leonardo DiCaprio or Matt Damon.

He has some very weird hand/finger movements in this scene and throughout parts of the film. It’s clear where at least part of his inspiration for his incredible character Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean universe.

The way Hunter S Thompson described his attorney in the book was disturbing. The attorney had connections to everything and everyone. The attorney knew the ins and outs of just about everything exclusive and the the drugs he got a hold of. Hunter basically was friends with what could have been the Devil in the flesh.

Gonzo disappeared out over the water in the San Diego area importing his next score. Too bad. I heard of him in East L.A. ; a Latino with a Law degree , writing, and an endorsement in his book by HT himself. I almost met him at ELAC. I could have booked him as I was VP and bookings for all kinds of acts and appearances. sorry I didn't.

The colour palette looks like it’s directed by Wes Anderson. But more horrifying.
@HaloInverse
@HaloInverse 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's the camera angles. Wes Anderson seems to have a thing for straight-on camera angles, everything centered and balanced in frame as (in)humanly possible. But in this...everything is crooked, wobbling and swaying. The colors say "calm", but the point of view says "you are losing your grip, if you ever had it in the first place".
