How can we push back on a world focused on anger and turning fear into blame? Learn how everyday acts of bravery and symbolic gestures can be used to give hope and inspire action rather than despair. Nicole LeFavour is a student of cognitive science and former State Senator who left elected office to organize peaceful civil disobedience in her own state capitol. Here she draws on the work of Jennifer Lerner and her research on decision making, going on to discuss the manipulation of human emotions, and how we can combat the crisis of despair by changing memes which anger us and taking action in real life to make others feel less alone..
Nicole LeFavour served for four years in the Idaho House of Representatives and four years in the state Senate. She left formal elected office to try to make change from the outside. In 2014 helped organize over 200 people to do silent, peaceful, respectful acts of civil disobedience to change state policy to protect the rights of gay and transgender Idahoans. After well over 200 peaceful arrests inside the state Capitol, people can still be fired, evicted and refused service in Idaho for being gay or transgender. Ever focused on all that has been gained, LeFavour and others continue to work for protection on the state and national level.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This is an academic talk about fear in media on a societal level. It's not about inner growth of people as individuals.

This was wonderful. I truly enjoyed this. Not only did you go into the sociology of the way fear affects society as a whole, but you dove into the psychology of how it affects our behaviour and reasoning. Then offering a comparison on fear and anger to even further your statement backed by evidence. I really enjoyed the way you presented this talk. Learnt a lot about some things and some I was already aware on. Super happy I was able to view this tonight. I felt completely drawn to this video and there was a reason. I feel it was very thought provoking! I’ve shared it everywhere lol!!

My listening was wide open for this message. I appreciate the defining of fear and anger and how it affects thinking to the degree I was not aware of before. I am placing things out of my life and new things into my life for 2017. This was really helpful!!! Thank You. Susan

Anger is a natural reaction that comes back stronger if we reject it, it. There must be another way or I did not get the intended meaning.

Good talk, spot on and very timely. This is an area in which I've done independent study as well. Fear, as you've pointed out is a part of the fight/flight response deep within our triune brain. The fight/flight response is mitigated by the amygdala. The amygdala controls the body's hormones, what kinds of information and experiences are parsed into long term memories, and it's the emotional center of the brain. It can overrule the conscious decision making area of our neo-cortex. It's ancient, and as you've pointed out is in some ways the nerve center for our survival instincts. The amygdala has been shown to be enlarged in people with bipolar illness and creative, artistic personality types. I used to think how people respond to that immediate impulse was personality driven and it is but to another extent, I'm convinced it's culturally bound as well and it could well be almost 50/50. It's bound to the emotions generated when people chose a political figure or take a side on a moral decision or embrace a religious stance. I wish it were enough to be aware of it and think my knowledge of it could effect the thinking of others but it can't. Thanks for offering the voice, I can't.

It's about how a negative message can be converted into a positive one. She shown how easy it is. It does not take many skills but we only need to have the will to do it.

I like the talk but what bothers me about academics is they sometimes lack humor. The meme she changed was meant to be funny. It's the concept of irony. Being that it starts off with a pejorative stance toward negativity followed by the most negative statement one can make toward another being... That's the joke. The meme was making fun of itself. Maybe she didn't get the joke or maybe the example was just a poor one. All she did was took a funny meme and made it un-funny, which to me does nothing to advance awareness. Comedy is critical and also says dark things with the intent to enlighten.

The venue accidentally got my slides a bit out of order and so my words did not exactly match with the meme on the screen. It was much funnier in practice. Sorry. It did fall flat on the video. I promise I'm not an academic.

that meme wasn't funny, it was sarcastic which can be funny for few who understands dark humor but it wasn't funny for everyone and was mostly negative emotion causing, so that's why she used it...
