We rented a 500mm f4 prime lens and took it to Norfolk to photograph and video the birds at the Cley Salt Marshes. This isn't a lens review video. It's the resulting video and photographs with a bit about our experience of using a large telephoto prime lens in the field. Some of images are taken at RAF Lakenheath and Brands Hatch motor racing circuit, which we visited on our way / way back.
We hope you enjoy the video. Let us know what you think…

Really enjoyed your video, can't beat the North Norfolk coast for birding, spent many a long day clocking so many different species there in my younger days, Titchwell is my favourite, thanks for a great video.

Great video cracking images looks a quality lens and the way bear helped you move the lens was excellent 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The lens may be a tad heavy but it saves you going to the gym instead I’d prefer a good weight ladened walk around nature any day 😂

Glad you enjoyed it. You make a good point. I am sure I was just a bit more toned when we got back. One arm was definitely longer than the other 😀👋👍🐨

Nice video, enjoyed watching that, i am in Norfolk area soon, might just have to pay a visit to that site when there, Now with regards to the lens would you prefer the 500mm prime over say the Sigma 150-600mm or something a little smaller,

Hi James, I hope you have a good visit and thanks for the comment - I also recommend Horsey Gap to see the seals (there’s a video of that on our channel too). Good question about the lens, and here’s my personal opinion. I already have a 100-500 zoom and wouldn’t be without it. Small(ish) , sharp, versatile. But I have fallen for the large prime. The image quality is exceptional. I would prefer a 600mm for a bit more reach. If I could only have one then it would be the zoom, but if I could have both then I would not hesitate. The prime is more cumbersome, harder to get through the slots in a hide, more of a commitment to lug about, and obliges me to use a monopod or tripod so doesn’t suit all use cases. But that image quality and wider aperture….so nice. Does that help? K&B.

@@kirkandbear It certainly does, I have the Sigma 150-600mm C but always fancied one of the larger primes, was thinking maybe sell sigma and get one of the prime lens and a smaller zoom like the 100-400, and thanks for the info about Horsey Gap, will check out the video 🙂

@@jamesc8367 I’m glad…It sounds like you have a plan. I notice the difference between full frame and APS-C. I used to have a 100-400 on APS-C and changed to full frame and the 100-500. Even at 500mm I keep wanting more reach. I have concluded that - affordability to one side - having two camera bodies (one of each sensor size) would be ideal. I suppose it depends on the subject - birds are rarely big enough in the frame. Even at RAF Lakenheath (see separate video) the jet planes could have been larger in the frame for photographs - although crop mode for video is brilliant for more reach free of charge on either sensor size. K&B.
