That was the Palace Pier in Brighton, the fountain you saw is on the road leading to it, the railway next to the beach is volks, which is the oldest electric railway in the world. The panning shot was from the West Pier on the left back to the Palace Pier. There's an interesting recent video on KZfaq by Captain Delusion which explains Shutter speed which is worth a watch.

The Super-8 film works with 16 frames/second so yes, those shutters are there to separate the frames you're seeing. With the shutters operating you see 16 pictures a second which your brain thinks they are a moving object (however this works smoother with 24+ frames/sec so you still experience a bit of stuttering when you watch 16 fps). Without shutters you would see a smeary mess with each picture drawn in and out of the picture (as you imagined yourself). What we did, back in the days, when we didn't have a free spindle, was unreal the tape on the floor (or table) and put the now empty spindle on the back and let that pull the film through. The back spindle forces the film to run at the correct speed, the front spindle is just there to feed the film. That large, landing plane is a British European Airways Hawker Siddeley Trident 3B. BEA formed together with BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) the nowadays British Airways in 1974. The pier and beach are at Brighton, that little train on the beach is the Volk's Electric Railway.

To retrobright the Tomy cover, use the vapor method. Do not put it in peroxide but put a little peroxide in a transparent box and place the cover above the peroxide it so it does not get wet. Close the box and put it outside in the sun on a warm summer day. The peroxide will form condensation. And thus remove the yellowing without getting the cover wet. Works perfectly!

This is the first feature film I've watched in one go in years. You're truly an inspiration for all us tinkerers around Vince!

The location in the video is Brighton Palace Pier I believe. Seems like the footage was filmed on the Marine parade overlooking 'Volk's Electric Railway Workshop' & 'Banjo Groyne' on the A259. The Victorian fountain is also close to the Pier located in Old Steine Gardens. I spent way too long googling old tall fountains in England! 🤣 Edit, I presume the Airport is also Brighton Airport as that's also quite nearby.

Screaming at my screen. The spool carrying the film shouldn’t be motor driven on playback. The projector pulls the film. Only the second spool should be driven to take the film. The projector should be able to automatically load the film. Only feed the beginning in and it should transport it to the back. The film on the stage is pulled by a hook frame by frame and during transport the shutter blocks the light. Otherwise you would see only stripes smeared over the screen. Seeing this knowledge fade makes me feel old. Nice video 👍

46 minutes in very briefly there's that worst projector nightmare when the film stops moving and the frame in front of the lamp starts to melt from the centre out. I have to thank you for the ifixit screwdriver repair. Mine's had a loose end for almost as long as I've had it and I've never known that it can be taken apart like that and tightened.

On the projector it is called the gate and the blades block the projection whilst the film moves the the next frame.

My dad had a super 8 camera in the '70s. In addition to family movies I remember that I sometimes played a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Obviously there was no sound but I felt a great pleasure to look at it on a white sheet. My father still has the projector in his cellar.

Other down sides of glue guns is that they heat up pretty slowly, you waste different types of colored glue when swapping or you need one for each different type, they can drip glue at the nossle or where you rest it on leading to more wasting glue,they only do one thing and for the price of a good one(and a bit more) you might as well get a hot air soldering station.

With regard to the old cine film, the logo on the fire engine looks very like the London Fire Brigade badge, which would probably make sense if the airport was Heathrow. The plane appears to be a Hawker Siddeley Trident operated by British European Airways, which was active between 1946 and 1974, when it changed to British Airways. One of them, BEA's Flight 548, crashed shortly after take off from Heathrow on 18 June 1972, losing all 118 on board. It crashed about 2 minutes after take off, coming down near Staines, and it became known as the 'Staines Air Disaster'. It remains the worst ever airline disaster in the UK, except for the Pan-Am flight over Lockerbie, but that was caused by you-know-what, not a failure by the plane or crew, as in the case of flight 548. There is a small posibility that the plane in the film was the very one that crashed, but of course it depends on when that film was taken, and is a small chance, as BEA operated somewhere between 24 and 40 Tridents. You can wiki it - they believe it was possible that the captain (Ex-RAF who saw active duty in WW2) had a heart attack, which may, or may not, have caused the crash. And that is definitely Brighton - the moment I saw the pier and light green railings, I recognised it (I used to work there). The railings are still the same colour today. If you ever go and look at them, you can see countless layers of paint, as they clearly just paint over them, without stripping the old paint off. Having spent over an hour on goggle maps and street view, I'm not entirely sure where that was filmed. Yes part shows the Volk's Railway (filmed I think just opposite Belgrave Place), but the part showing the (Palace?) pier was, I 'think', filmed just a few hundred yards further along the prominade (Marine Parade) towards the Palace Pier, roughly opposite Atlingworth Street. Or was it the old West Pier, the one that burnt down (twice I think). I THINK it WAS the Palace pier, so where I said (have a look on street view). But I'm puzzled by the thing at 47:42, which appears to be a concrete walkway/causeway heading towards the sea, but the only thing like that today is further along, immediately AFTER the Palace Pier. So I'm assuming whatever it was, was demolished at some point. I think, judging by the cars, it was filmed in the 1960s, possibly early 1970s, but no later than that. The fountain at 47:50 is the Victoria Fountain, Old Steine Gardens, Brighton. I found an article online from November 2023, talking about how, after 10 months and a £400,000 refurbishment, it stopped working just a few weeks of the ceremony to reopen it lol! The pier at 47:58 is the old West Pier, which per goggle "The pier closed to the public in 1975 and fell into disrepair and gradually collapsed. Major sections fell into the sea during storms in late 2002, and two separate fires, both thought to be arson, in March and May 2003 destroyed most of the remaining structure, leading to English Heritage declaring it beyond repair". The remnants are still there, and there has been lots of talk about restoring it, both before and after the fires in 2003, but those that wanted to rebuild it, couldn't get permission. I was there during the early 2000s, and watched from my office as it burnt down. That clip was filmed (zoomed in) from about halfway along the 'Palace' pier a few hundred yards away. Again, you can see that today from goggle street view on the Palace pier. It seems it was filmed right where the 'Palm Court Restaurant' sign is now on the pier (see street view from the pier). That isn't a reference to a circus, but the circle and stalls entrance at the Theatre Royal. That was filmed, I think, at the entrance on New Road, Brighton. At 48:27, I don't think that's Dover, but where they built the Brighton Marina in the late 70s. As you go around the coast there, you'll end up at the 'Seven Sisters' cliffs, and the infamous 'Beachy Head' where numerous people have jumped off to their demise. That was also filmed near the end of the Palace pier, looking east. You can see that tall building in the middle of the screen at 48:31 from the goggle street view near the end of the pier today, as well as the tall brown building in the centre of the screen at 48:33. You can also see that long line of arches below them today. At 48:39 (again filmed from the Palace pier), that is the Palace Pier Groyne, with the big manhole cover at 48:412 still visible today from goggle maps. At 48:59, that is the Helter Skelter, which is still at the end of the pier today. My mum was born just outside Brighton, and I was born and brought up not far away. It seems that film was almost certainly from Londoners on a day trip to the seaside, which is probably where 90% of them go when going to the beach, as it's d direct train ride on the London to Brighton line. I know Brighton very well, such a cool place. Colour film back then was expensive, and it was definitely before 1974 as that's when BEA became BOAC and then British Airways. Hope this is of interest to people.

The "self loading" mechanism on projector. 1 you press down while feeding film, then release when it catches in the film gate. It is designed to slip and not turn unless manually pressed down... The reel and take up reel, are on a slip-tension, allowing a tight wind, without breaking and scratching the slim. You should seek a 'hands-free' take up reel, as they will slip-grip the film tighter towards the center where the next wrap of film will settle it into place.

First, add me to the "I Watched Vince's Videos And It Gave Me The Knowledge To Fix Something" club. (We might need a shorter name.) It was the seized motor part that helped me. Had a battery operated dice thrower from the early 70's that I bought and it didn't work. Verified the current was going to where it needed to when it was switched on. Started turning the gears and soon it started moving a little on its own (didn't have it turned on). Did that for a while, popped the battery in, and BOOM! It works now! Thanks! And I think when Vince dropped that tiny screw into the projector, that was the angriest I've seen/heard him. Most times when something happens it's a calm sounding "well, that's annoying" when I probably would have thrown the thing across the room. But I sensed a little anger/frustration this time. 😃

As a vintage Tomy collector and repairer with a few different styles of these it was great to see.

In the very first days of square pin plugs there was a carry over from the old heavy duty high draw "phat" round pins like you had your cooker or front room electric fire hooked up to via round pins, radio and telly plugs also had a fuse wire plug which wasn't so much to protect the mains from a blown up gadget but more to protect the telly or radio from ground strike lightning surges which would merrily destroy your tubed item lest the fuse wire would blow out and save the day. I remember having to change the fuse wire on our round pin stuff if I wanted to watch the telly if there had been a thunderstorm during the night and lightning hit near the substation. My father fed up with it, decided one weekend he and I would rewire the whole house from top to bottom with all new square pin stuff (purloined from BR, even the new trip board was British Rail's finest, whether it was light bulbs, tea bags, tinned fruit or Izal toilet paper it all came from British Rail)(Father was a bit of a hypocrite, his mate from railway S&T offered to wire in a "cheat" switch which could bypass the meter so for 3 weeks in a month free electric direct from the feed and not detectable by meter readers either, father went all pious about stealing despite having nicked just about everything from his employer but he said that was a perk)

Possibly sending it into Talking Pictures TV may be an option to see if anyone can track them down, they look for old reels etc and can remaster them for broadcast and investigation of the owners etc.

Hi Vince, At 31:15, When screwing in Small flat head screws like that & even small Philips head screws or any screws really that are awkward, I put a piece of Insulation or Masking tape around the Screw & Screwdriver, Not too much just to stop the issue that you were having when the Screw dropped down into the “Abyss” of the Projector, Just a thought for future reference! 🙂

I have that black hot glue stick too. It's really handy for use on parts of things that are visible. I don't know why, but the flat (slightly shiny) black color just looks miles better than the milky, sometimes yellowish result you get with cheap clear glue. It doesn't make things look like they were repaired with bodily fluids.

My god that was stressful! Those bulbs get really hot and I was just waiting for the stuck film to burn right through... lucky it didn't have an opportunity to warm up! You noticed the mechanism on to lock and unlock the reel - once the film has finished and sitting of the back reel, you normally feed the film on to the front wheel and lock it in place to rewind. Pretty sure when you had the film spitting out back at you it was in rewind ;) Kinda funny hearing the talk about the pick up reel .... that smaller movie has a lot of space to fill up!

Just a fuse but yes I was confused when I saw for the first time that you have a fuse in there😂 That Chainsaw.. crazy!! It‘s quite loud actually.. to see this old footage is so cool! iFixit Screwdriver.. fixing the iFixit screwdriver without the iFixit bits.. nice. PS4 Controller.. saved from the bin. Nice. Wired Mouse.. I like this the most just for the yellow matt!😂 This USB Ports are pretty cool. And it looks really well. I like it! Voltage Detector.. Oh it works.. interesting little device.. Sudoku Game.. those carbon tracks on top are like a cheap multi layer board. This took you quite long to fing out. I'd say the projector was my favourite alltough I like the USB A replacements. With that spinning shutter thing, I recall something about the same frame being shown twice with a blank frame in-between. Somehow that gives smoother motion.

The R2D2 robot in the lounge - I watched your fix and the next day delivered a picture to a guy. In his lounge was the exact same robot. I asked him about it and he said 'oh yeah - I wrote all the magazines for that'. Small world.

I'd say what's happened with that Tomy game is that the lubricant in the motor has migrated from the bearings to the commutator. Taking the motor apart and lubricating it would be the ultimate repair, but I don't know how easy it is to repair such a motor. If you leave the game unattended for a while, the motor could seize up again.

I would have put a drop of oil on the tomy pinball motor just to make sure it doesn’t seize up again, also, that may be why it’s so loud.

46:12 This is where the film was burned through. The film on those types of projectors cannot be stopped if the lamp is on.

1:08:22 your better off buying some of that sugru stuff not sure if its spelt like that but its a putty that goes solid and its great for cables to make it not bend at the join etc.

Really enjoyed that video!! My favourite was the projector! The solder will oxidise very quickly vs gold plating! Gold is highly innert at atmospheric conditions!

Back in the early 70"s my brother was projector mad, he had a sound super 8 projector and a sound super 8 cine camera. He as loads of films of me and him when we were kids. In those days a cine film could be hired from a company called Derrans in Dudley. This was before videos. He is now 60 and he's still got this equipment.

31:50 oh the pain. I was just thinking with my RC cars I would always put the grubscrew in the pinion gear before trying to tighten it up. So easy to lose!

there is only 2 places I know with white cliffs, and the 1st is nearly 100% my thought of Brighton Pier. the 2nd would be Tennyson Down IoW, but to see that from the South UK mainland would be nearly impossible without a telescopic lense which from memory the old cameras that recorded these videos didn't have.

Nice job, Vince :) Me and my brother were recorded as kids, to Super 8, also. It was super expensive at the time.

Vince many of the older projectors from the 40s on used optical tracks ON the film, no magnetic tapes and if you look closely at a film with audio you'll see a waveform like track like that on a computer. This is optical sound on film and it's a very neat technology, ahead of it's time. the newer ones had magnetic tape on the film instead of optical. Film projectors are a masterpiece of technology.

Back in the late 70s/early 80s dad would break out a sheet to use as a screen and his collection of Super 8 videos about once a year and watch them all. He had some he took while in Viet Nam, some of the family at the zoo, and a couple cartoons. I looked forward to it each time! No sound, but he would tell the stories as we watched them. I would suggest looking for instructions on the Super 8. It should automatically load the film around to the side where you start winding it onto the uptake reel. I noticed it said "Loadmatic" on the side, so I'm guessing it will do that for you! Thanks, Vince! Always a treat!

My iFixit screwdriver kit looks the exact same as yours. It's the one that came with the Pro Tech Toolkit. But I swear, it doesn't unscrew like that. I broke my fingers trying to unscrew it, there's no way. So maybe it's a later revision that unscrews like that. The back of mine does seem a bit loose and wobbly but it's not too bad, I'll just live with it.

At 47:32, I think that may be a Trident Aircraft with the B.E.A Livery!

For stuck or rounded screws I use a rubber band in the screw head and it grips the driver bit allowing the screws to be loosened. I use this method for laptops/PC/phone screws so how it'd work on decking screws I don't know!

Vince great Vid. On the projector is the gate and is in time with each frame, as it being super 8 on the sprockets but mate you done a very good job

The exposed earth key also locks in the neutral and phase. So if wired correctly even on extender adapters the blue wire is neutral. The schuko system we use in Germany has a lock key as well, but it is almost never be used. The hole is there, but the key is missing on plugs. Instead there are two earth prongs and you can plug in two orientations. So the blue neutral can end up being the black phase when using an extender cord. This may not sound like a big issue, but e.g. when dealing with a lamp the phase may end up at the bulb thread, while plugged the other way around phase will end up at the switch, keeping the lamp without a bulb save when turned off.

As a kid we used to have super 8 cartoons at the local youth club once a month. I was about 10/11 so this was 45 years ago. It doesn't seem possible now just how much tech (and the world) has moved on.. Crazy eh!!

I never liked working with those super 8 projectors always have trouble getting the feed started so it was fun watching someone else struggle with it and thinking will it get stuck near the lamp and burn up the film then seeing the bulb get touched with finger im like wonder how many hours the bulb has left due finger oils same with belts and chain corrosion. I would recommend wearing cotton gloves on these types of devices. It was exciting watching you get it going great video.

I’d use maguiars plastic headlight two step kit comes with a scotchbright pads and some plastic polish for plastic lenses and a spray afterwards for clarity would work a treat and wouldn’t affect other plastic areas as it’s a cream. Also the video looks like an old BOAC plane landing a British icon there is one at the Duxford museum
